I've been going to Original Hems Studio since my high school days (to get original hem on my 7, True Religion & Hudson jeans..IYKYK lol) and they use to be affordable (~ $5-7 per jean or even cheaper for basic hem) for the quality of work that they did, but boy have times changed..and not in a good way, in this economy to keep customer loyalty & retention. Original Hems Studio is located in Laguna Hills, off of Lake Forest Drive, corner facing the Shell gas station. Their services include hemming, tailoring/alterations & dry cleaning. The inside of the store is modern & clean with a black, red, silver color palette. Way nicer than most tailoring places. The wait for service can be a minute (so be patient), since they seem short-staffed the drop-off & pick-up times I've gone. When my daughter needed a dress tailored (made tighter at the chest area, since she's quite petite) for her friend's upcoming quinceañera, I immediately thought of Original Hem. Based on my prior good experiences with them ~ with my jeans & dresses, I thought they would be a perfect option for the job. To say I was SHOCKED at how much they quoted me for the alteration, was an understatement. Mind you..the dress cost about $30 and the alteration to just bring in the sides a tad at the chest area cost $45..LIKE HOW DOES IT COST MORE THAN THE DRESS?!?! I get the dress had some ruching and lace..but does it justify costing THAT much? Sigh..in the end, I just gave in and agreed to pay the charge because we were already pot committed (sized and everything) and the birthday party is weeks away. I really don't have time to find another alteration place. When we picked up the dress 3 days later, the workmanship was ok, not wow for what I paid. The measurements the girl did was correct & perfectly fit my daughter, so I guess if she's happy then I'm happy. BUT, I likely won't be back since prices have gone up significantly! When I asked (out of curiosity) for a quote for original hemmed jeans now-a-days, they charge $16!!! A huge contrast to my $5 days. ASK FOR PRICES, before you decide to do any services, as they conveniently don't have them posted anywhere ~ in-store or online..since the sales gal says it varies per item (based on material & level of difficulty of the alteration). I'm super bummed to have lost an alteration go-to place, but I'm sure there are other good & reasonably priced ones out there. read more

I have visited this place many times over the years and WAS happy. I came in today with a request to sew my glove tip that is ripping. I was told they're much too busy to do this kind of work. Too busy?! Wow. I guess they no longer need my business in the future for hems and such. I won't be back. The overall handling of a customer (me) was rude and unnecessary. read more

Didn't realize i had already come here 11 years ago and got terrible treatment then. Forgot and came today- Carla the tailor was horrendous I am attitude. When you go in to a tailor for the biggest day in your family's life and the tailor is rude and horrible to you, it taints the whole experience. Simple hemming of a gown should not be stressful on the tailor. She spoke in Spanish about me and didn't know understood. I took my dress elsewhere. What an awful experience. read more

Part ordered didn't work so tried to return. No response and couldn't get through on the phone. I would stay away from this place.

Very busy as both Cleaners & Seamstresses but severely understaffed so that one customer who waited over 15 minutes just turned around & walked out. In addition, they are fairly expensive compared to the place I chose - $10+ versus $4.50 per pant. I don't how the result will be until Friday however. I'll review when I get the work back. Over the years I've brought in several pairs of jeans that needed hemming, and I think they started out at $5 each. I do need to bring some jeans in now and I guess I'll see how much they charge now but my only complaint at this point is, everyone I've ever dealt with in that shop is surly. I paid $45 at this store to have my suit pants altered to be smaller. After a quick try-on, I had to leave on a business trip. Later, when I wore the pants for a meeting, I realized they were still too large. When I returned and asked them to make further adjustments, they said I had to pay another $46. One of the managers--who seemed to be the decision-maker--was very difficult to understand and showed no willingness to help resolve the issue. She insisted that it had been more than 30 days and therefore they wouldn't make any changes. However, there were no signs in the store stating there is a 30-day limit, and no one informed me of this policy when I first used their service. Based on my experience, I don't feel this store takes responsibility for customer satisfaction. read more

I want to share a recent disappointment with my fellow Yelpers. I recently purchased a new suit jacket and needed the sleeves tailored. Without hesitation, I took it to Original Hems. When I dropped it off, I asked that they please press and remove all the lint; I didn't even ask about the cost. So, $35 and $6 for the press. When I picked it up, there was noticeable lint and the first lady took it back and rolled it. After I tried it on, I noticed more lint (not in a Karen way either). When I asked the second lady about it, she told me that lint "was a dry cleaning thing", but they did press it and re-lint rolled it for me begrudgingly. When asked how much it would've been to dry clean it, she told me $6.50. Now let me ask anyone with an ounce of common sense, why in the world would any reason person not pay an extra 50 cents to have it done right? Oh wait, perhaps it was because that option was never given to me at time of drop-off. Frustrated and disappointed as I sit here and re-lint roll it a third time... Brought in my medical scrubs to get hemmed and they didn't mention that they'd be closed the Saturday, Sunday, and Monday before 4th of July (Tuesday). What's the point of asking for my phone number and email if you're not going to inform me of important closures, let alone in-person? What an inconsiderate and unprofessional business. P.S. Forgot to mention that I called in as well; after a large number of rings(about 10), they have a generic message saying that the 'reps are busy helping other customers' even when they're actually closed, with no mention of any [holiday] closures, let alone giving the caller the ability to leave a message. Kaura was unhelpful when expressing concerns to her when I picked it up. They usually give the cut portion back and this time didn't. They also cause a decent on an unrelated part of the pants. I took two pair of new pants in to be hemmed. The length I requested was 30 inches. The pair I had marked myself were fine, (however the stitching was poor quality), the other pair are 30 3/4 inches, and the hem is very wavy and uneven. There were also 6 small holes all along the bottom of the hem. These pants are unwearable now, as they are too long, uneven, and have holes all across the bottom. I am not sure if they got a new seamstress but the quality of the alternations are not good anymore. We have brought items here over there years with mixed results. Overall they have done okay, but this past experience has left me flabbergasted. We brought in a pair of jeans for a simple hem. Easy enough, as the name of the shop is Original Hems, right? It was a basic stitch, nothing special. I didn't even need the original hem which I have done elsewhere for a similar fee to what I paid here, which was $12. Came back to pick up the jeans several days later and the hem isn't straight and the stitching is loose and uneven. They apologized, said they had their machines calibrated and it was causing issues and that they had similar complaints from other people. (As an aside, if you knew you were having similar complaints, wouldn't you inspect/fix your work and not just cross your fingers and hope the customer didn't notice?) I took them up on their offer to redo the hem. Came back several days later and the hem looks similar to the previous week. This time when I brought it up they said they needed a special thread that they would need to order and it could take several days to get it, but they would redo the hem again. If you needed special thread, why not call me and explain the situation? Why make me return to the store and, and did you think honestly hope I wouldn't notice, that I wouldn't double check the hem after the last fiasco? Isn't hemming what you do? Why wouldn't you have a variety of threads at your disposal? At a minimum, maybe offer a refund for the inconvenience of multiple trips, multiple weeks and still trying to give me shoddy work? This is a basic pair of jeans. It doesn't require special thread. I have now made 4 visits, paid $12 plus the cost of gas (which I'm pretty sure now exceeds the $12 I paid), and still have sloppily hemmed jeans that weren't even pressed before they were given to me. I have attached photos. The bottom is a brand new pair, the top is what they felt was acceptable. It's hard to tell in the photos, but the hem isn't even a straight line across, at bows up and comes back down at the sides. Update: When we brought the pants back in we noticed the tag already said "Rehem nicely" from the previous trip. We spoke with the manager and received a refund, and have decided to have the pants hemmed elsewhere. There's only so many chances you can give. read more

Four Stars. First time we tried this company. We have found higher prices and poorer quality elsewhere. BF had four pairs of pants hemmed for $5.95 each. They were all properly hemmed and were ready on the promised date. Original hems had provided the loops of removed fabric to prove that they had hemmed the pants and indicate how much fabric they had removed. I appreciated this. I once ran into an issue with another place (Power Cleaners in Like Forest) who charged us for hemming, kept the clothes for over a week and, never even touched the pants at all. read more
