I love Oren's coffee, I love the robust and rich flavor of the coffee especially compared to the leading competition. But the atmosphere the employees create is unsettling and unwelcoming. I am always more than cordial saying good morning and thank you for my drink but never receive a polite response, I work in the area and I have clients who have responded the same way, in particular to a heavy set "gentleman" who works there weekday mornings. I am a part of the LGBTQIA+ community, and as a trans Hispanic woman, I can't help but feel the transphobia bias he has with me, as I've seen him react and say your welcome or have a good day to other guests while I'm there. But I also have a client she as well has had issues with the service here. Whether his bias is against the color of someone's skin or their gender identity or hes just a bitter and encumbered human being, he should not be at all in front of house service. In the political climate we are in, we all deserve a little more grace than he is providing.

I've only been to Oren's a handful of times since I graduated but I stopped by today for a cold brew, which was just strong enough to make me feel slightly caffeinated. Their sizes are much larger than I remember - cold drinks are 16 oz for a small and 24 oz for a large! While I was a student here this was my favorite coffee spot south of TC; I pretty much only left butler to go to class and get a large coffee with soy and maybe an Ovenly pastry here (not that much of an exaggeration). The coffee here is better and far more reasonably priced than Joe's. The shop is pretty narrow and there's almost no seating so it's much better for grab and go. One thing to note though is that the lids of hot drinks here are often put on the cups with the opening facing the seam so it leaks when you try to drink it; this has happened to me more frequently at this Oren's location than at any other coffee shop. Also recently they seem to be doubling up on cups instead of using sleeves, which seems wasteful. :( They have a fairly wide selection of pastries from different bakeries around the city. Right now they have scones from Alice's Tea Cup, cookies and quick breads from Ovenly, and croissants and other viennoiserie from Bien Cuit (smaller than the croissants at the actual location though). The danish I got today tasted stale, but the pastries I've gotten directly from Bien Cuit have also all been stale-ish so I'm not sure if this is Oren's's fault. In the past they've also had baked goods from Balthazar, Dough, and Underwest (relieved that they no longer carry them), so I'm excited to see what selection they'll have on my next visit. Previously 3.5/5 but my opinion has slightly dropped due to Bien Cuit and the drink lid issue

Pretty expensive but love the matcha here. Overall good tasting stuff but prepare to spend $6-$7 for a drink.

Easy enough to grab a quick bite. Hate their cookies, nothing special but I thought pricey. Don't drink coffee so I can't comment on that

Overpriced and underwhelming -- the quality of the beans was not pleasurable. I've had much better for less.

The hype certainly stilll lives here, as we waited about an hour before being seated. Luckily, we didn't have to wait in line the whole time and wandered the neighborhood. When we were seated, service was quick and attentive. The staff are friendly at answering questions, and the smells are fantastic. We got the pho, bun bo hue, and the Banh cuon. The banh cuon was excellent, great flavor and texture. The pho is different from BAE, with the noodles here being the classic thin pho noodles. The broth is also much lighter, almost like a southern style. The bun Bo hue was ok. Tbh, it was a bit light in flavor, and there was really just a little spice in it that carried it. Otherwise, I wouldn't get it again. Overall, the spot is good, but the flavors just weren't quite there for me. I've heard great things about the banh mis here, but given the soup I had, I wouldn't come to this spot and would rather just visit the union square location. Wish I could give 3.5 stars.

First of all, I have to mention the prices: we got 6 pastries and 2 hot chocolates for just over $40: a steal in this economy. Second, it was mostly authentic: the "francia krémes" (which they call a "Napoleon" here for some reason) was quite close to how they serve it in Hungary, save for the caramelized and sickeningly sugary top (which I skipped). The "dobos torta" had the reverse problem: its top--the eponymous "drum"--was authentic, but the meat of it far, far too chocolatey. Guys, a slice of "dobos" is NOT supposed to put you in a diabetic coma! It is not even meant to be very chocolatey! It is supposed to be much more subtle, even savory. The pastries we took home, which included several "rétesek," received high reviews as well. The servers were nice, but did not speak Hungarian. My only other critique would be that the space is incredibly cramped. You will be elbow-to-elbow with various Columbia students. My companion also told me the bathroom was filthy. If you're OK with these rougher spots, though, this cozy café is worth a visit if you want a peak at the "old country."
