This was our first trip to Oregon. We are Pinot noir lovers and have been drinking Willamette Valley wines for several years before finally making a visit. This was my first wine tour and it was everything more than I could expect!!!. It started about 3 weeks ago, when I was visiting my brother in Vegas and he let me know his wife and him were coming to Portland to help his daughter and her husband show their son a college tour. And of course, he said I and our middle brother, who leaves in Portland, was responsible for the "arrangements." He is the eldest, and I love him, but he can be pushy ;). Anyway, when I got back to Portland it was like what were we going to do and knowing my brother liked wine -- actually we all do -- I thought a wine tour would be great. Now, unfortunately this is getting to be the busy season and finding a tour guide in less than 3 weeks was a challenge. I hit up 3 wine tours and everyone was very nice to refer me to someone else and after a couple of rounds I finally got to Jeff. Hallelujah! Now we did have a lot of unknowns -- number of people, number of wineries to visit, pack a lunch, etc. I wanted to keep our schedule flexible and one person in our tour was having scheduling issues. Jeff patiently worked through all of these unknowns, explaining how as a large group it would be polite to schedule ahead versus just dropping in. Suggesting a great lunch place -- The Horse Radish -- and keeping it flexible for our 8th person if they would show or not and setting us up so that we could have a 4th winery to visit if we wanted. It was just great, once we got our needs defined, Jeff arranged it all. So on Saturday (4/16), we had 7 people, all family, and Jeff was there in a nice van right on time. We piled in and off we went. Jeff grew up in the area and he was knowledgeable about its history, the various AVAs, and what made the Willamette Valley area unique to Pinot Noirs. We enjoyed the ride down as he explained the difference between cool years and warm years and how personal tastes can influence the wines you rave about or the wines that go meh. One point, and after this trip I understand it, is if you are buying Pinot Noirs at less than $50 you are missing the Pinot Noir experience. Also, Jeff was very familiar with how to get wines shipped through Alaska and made sure our cases were properly packed and marked for the free shipping Alaska offers on wine. Jeff organized this like a symphonic composer. We stopped at Hawks View. Beautiful place with excellent wines. Sort of the exposition to our excursion. He knew when to step back and let the winery people take the lead. He was there if we had questions, made sure people were not distracted from the presentations, and when we were buying making sure everything was packed properly and all people and items were accounted for. Then we went into the exposition at the second winery. I will tell you that this vintner's wines were not of this world. It was like we were drinking liquid ambrosia of the gods. The owner of this winery was like a sculptor who chips away at the stone to reveal the art existing within the stone. If you want to find this place, call Jeff. I am not going to talk. Then an intermission at the Horse Radish for lunch. I had the best ham sandwich in 40 years there. Finally, the recapitulation in a different interval at Dundee Hills Estates. We enjoyed an incredible view of the Willamette Valley, with Mount Hood in the distance. We enjoyed their offerings, bought more wine. Finally we were done. Jeff took care of all the packing and stowing, we could enjoy the wine, views, and the wonderful afterglow of a wonderful day. As my oldest brother said "It gave me a totally different perspective of Portland, it is just incredible."
