But I could not believe the inventory and the colors available of leather was just a beautiful site. My boyfriend found big gloves as his a big gentle giant. So we were happy but I highly suggest checking out the inventory because I scored native America beads. The outside is deceiving so do not judge just go inside. It's not a huge store (it looks that way on the outside) but the staff is so knowledgeable and can get you what you're looking for. I went in for black leather for beading, drum hoops, and raw hide -- they had it all and was able to make recommendations based on my projects (it can be overwhelming with all the options). This place knows a lot about Leather and in all the right and non-kinky ways. And like the nearby Portland Outdoor Store, the Oregon Leather Company is a real and still welcome throughback to what is good regarding service, selection, and and a long proud business tradition. You could almost also call this place a museum, with it's old classic sign outside and at least 2 rooms of nothing but leather scraps inside. In the public area, there are also shelves filled with dyes, metal pieces, tools, and other leather craft supplies. There's also lots of interesting leather goods for sale at very competitive prices. In the non-public area, I saw (at a distance) more shelves, additional "clutter" and was left with an intense curiousity of what else was back there, upstairs, and in the basement. The folks here are also really nice, helpful, and wicked smart regarding their business. One of the young relatives was visiting that day and one of the owners was trying to start him in the business by putting him to work and suggesting that he come by once a week (or so) to help. I got a little emotional as I remembered getting involved in my Grandfather's service station business the same way. read more

I love it when I open the door I get a big whiff of the smell of leather. My olfactory senses are quite finely tuned. It also smells like the old building they do business in and I happen to like that "old building smell." I think that it's really cool that this family owned business has been around since 1908. I've visited over the years for all kinds of random reasons. I needed some leather to fashion into a strap for a purse. They had it. I needed snaps and grommets for a leather jacket. They had it. I needed a wide, yet thin piece of leather ribbon to fashion into a belt for a black lace dress. They had it. They have oodles and gobs of other cool stuff, and clothing too. What do they have? Leather jackets, pants, vests, wallets and purses. No, not kinky leather stuff here unless there is a back room that i did not see. They do have motorcycle style gear that looks cool and sturdy but its not padded. Its not a huge selection but worth checking out if you are looking for riding gear. The real draw here is if you are into leather working yourself. They have leather sheets, scraps, and straps. Also tools of all kinds and staining or tanning supplies. Upstairs is all riding gear including saddles, whips, harnesses, more straps, and stirrups. If its horse related they have it. The best part is that these folks know their leather. I used to go here quite often about a decade or so ago. Back then the owner was very friendly and helpful. Today(2/24/22) I was in with my two young daughters to show them one of my favorite stores in Portland. I was sadly disappointed when the same man that used to be so friendly years ago was extremely rude to me and my daughters. I asked him a couple of questions while I was looking around and was answered with short and rude answers. My advice to this man would be to either retire or severely adjust his attitude. About ten years ago I went to Oregon Leather to buy replacement leather soles for my favorite dance shoes. They had several and they were friendly and helpful like a regular craft store. I had no problem repairing the shoes myself. This weekend I went in to get another pair of replacement soles which had served me for almost a decade. I asked an unfriendly woman behind the counter where they were. She looked at me like I was talking about doing a liver transplant and informed me that they only sell leather soles to shoe repair shops. In the past they had no problem selling anything to any hobbyist like a retail craft store but that has now changed. So I went on the Internet and bought them. read more

This includes leather supplies for sewing your own, odds and ends for repairs, complete leather products (belts, wallets, jackets, etc), and an equestrian shop upstairs. for some reason I got a hankering to make custom tool sheaths, protectors, and carrying systems. This is for my saws, axes, and the like. It's like a hobby of leather fun to make my hobby of sawdust more fun. who knows. Back to reality here, this store had everything that I needed. Staff was very welcoming, friendly and eager to help. It was my first time every visiting and wont be my last! I just needed to pick up some studs and they gladly dropped what they were doing to help me with such a minuscule purchase. I was discussing a broken jean button I had on an expensive jacket. I had already purchased my own buttons at a Joan's Fabrics but was curious if they had a piece of machinery to help me remove and replace a jean button. Although I hadnt purchased buttons or payed them for their services they were eager to help me for the next 20 minutes fix my jacket, and it looks better than ever now! This place is super fun. There are lots of different types of leather/hide. From racoon faces to reindeer and buffalo hides and pig suede. It really is like a museum in here. The employees are also very helpful and friendly. We came here trying to buy an oil agent for softening a hide which we are tanning from scratch. They initially recommended a product and realized we were going to use it as a rug on a bamboo floor. In which they said it might damaged the floor and they would not recommended. A real treasure and great place to amuse your creative sensibilities ! I bought leather and hardware for our pack mules, and the place also lots of colored leather for motorcycle riders, sewing, upholstery, make believe etc. The entire upstairs floor has new and used saddles and other riding gear, plus more hardware and buckles. The store has been here for ages with wood floor, old glass display cabinets and really interesting clientele. Excellent people watching too. read more

Stay away from this company. My experience has been a nightmare. I ordered their leather pants and sent them a sample of my jeans. It took multiple emails and phone calls with no reply. I finally received the pants two months later. They were the wrong size. I could not even get them on. Horrible experience. I emailed and called them to have them recify the issue with no reply. Obvious the owner doesn't give a shit about his customers. I wasted time and money sending them my jeans as a sample size. Horrible service and high prices. Stay away from this company. read more

There's no other place to go. The people and processess are old school and they know everything there is to know about leather. They have a lot of ready made products (leather jackets, pants and tack and saddle equipment) and some tools, but I go in for the piece leather. They have every animal type, thickness and color - like bright green! You can buy whole pieces, but if you have a smaller project you can head to the bins in the back and dig through a ton of top quality, dirt cheap pieces. read more

Walked around the store, looking for help and as soon as an employee saw me coming they went to do something else. I am a friendly person, who showers regularly so it made me wonder if this is par for customer service. I'm not bothered by the fact that the business is in a very old building, but it is so cramped an dingy inside that it makes it hard to find anything. Most of what is available for purchase is kept behind employee only signs that it's a wonder how they stay in business. After college I owned a leather shop on Ocean Avenue in Carmel in the late 60's and found, on a visit home to Portland, their pricing on full hides, buckles, supplies and tools was so much better than available in California that it paid to order and ship. Same quality hides and actually faster delivery. Got out of the business when I grew up and wandered back in to Oregon Leather decades later and it was a time warp. There were a ton of prelim leather products, tools, skulls of all sorts of animals, ranging from bobcats to foxes, reptile skins, and beautifully skinned furry creatures (alright, it sounds morbid, but hey, there's a market out there). The prices were very reasonable and one of the sellers was the hunter who provided all of the materials. There were a few leather wallets, bags, note pads, but given how infrequently I jot down on pen/paper, I never checked the quality or the prices. If you or your family members like high quality fur or leather, this would be the first place to check out in Portland. read more

OL has a lot of leather and now and then you can find someone to help you unless it's pricing, then it becomes un-fun to do business here. Hardly anything is priced so you go get an item and drag it to the counter, someone pokes at an adding machine, gives you a price and then you go get another item. The store is obviously very old but does it really have to be filthy, too? I walked into the bathroom and it looked like it had been last cleaned in the 50's. The owners are incredibly understanding of your needs and want to help you achieve your leather craft needs for a competitive price. I got one on one service to get a matching piece of leather nearly identical to what i had. They have large hides with banding one them that will be scrapped into smaller pieces. This place has taken a complete nose dive. I brought in my father's belt which holds sentimental value for both of us, and asked if it could be repaired. They offered up the service of an employee who was not in the store at the moment. He was supposed to call me, which he never did. I finally got a quote and gave the thumbs up. 10 days after the supposed due date, and 3 more phone calls, they finally admitted that they LOST MY FATHER'S BELT AND BUCKLE. I demanded compensation and was told "we aren't done looking for it yet, but since it is going to be a very busy weekend give us 5 more days to get back to you."
