This summer, he came back for their summer program, and he absolutely loves being back! He really enjoys all the activities and learning, and comes home happy and excited to tell us about his day. A special shout-out to Ms. Preethi and Ms. Prerana -- Josh loves both of them, and we really appreciate how caring and wonderful they are with the kids. It's been so nice to see Josh back at Challenger Berryessa and enjoying his time there again. We have a lot of good memories from this school and are very happy with his summer experience!

There had been a lot of feedbacks and playground talks among parents that Challenger had a very strict culture and tough curriculum that not every kid can handle and adapt. The feedback is that usually boys that have high energy and too active will get into trouble a lot. To our surprise, he loves the school just after 1 week and always looking forward to going to school in the morning, we also see a big difference in his English speaking ability and his independence in behavior. We are assured to let him continue with this school for the next coming years. We want to give special thanks to the 2 teachers Miss Hemanth and Miss Sonali for their loving care and coaching, we can tell he is very happy with them and there is the strong teachers-students chemistry we observed. Kids usually are very pure and express directly what they feel so we are very assured when he nods and say he likes his teachers and wants to go to school. From what I see so far, I believe Challenger has a very strong track records and is well managed across all their schools to groom the students to be academically strong and independent character especially needed in the competitive Bay Area. No wonder Challenger had been listed as one of the top private schools in US.

As a recent graduate, my time at Piedmont Hills was good and bad. A lot of the teachers are very…read morepassionate about their work and are down to earth. A lot of them are kind and always nice to talk to despite the decades long age gap between student and teacher. There are a lot of resources such as a wellness center to support students. One of the biggest problems about this school is the terrible management over the bathrooms. There are several bathrooms across school, and many of them will be closed throughout the day. Newer and nicer bathrooms such as the ones in the new art building and science buildings are always closed. The bathrooms that most people use in the hallways also were closed on and off. There are also locations such as the portables and track where there is no bathroom close by (or the nearest is closed). There is also a 10 minute bathroom policy where you can't go to the bathroom for the first and last 10 minutes of class. For me, as someone who drank a lot of water as a cross country runner, this was hell on Earth. There were MANY times where I would go to class, wait 10 minutes for the 10 minute rule to pass to be able to request to go to the restroom, have to take a long walk (~3 minute walk) to a bathroom, find out that it was closed, walk to the other hallway (approx 70m away) to see if their bathroom is open and find that it is closed, and then be forced to give up or try to find staff to open the bathroom or go on ANOTHER long walk to the office to go to the staff bathroom where I'm not supposed to go to because that's the only bathroom that was open. The lack of bathrooms being open and 10 minute rule also leads to LONG lines for the bathroom during breaks and lunches, which is only exasperated by some of the stalls being taken by girls who smoke in there. Not to mention the bathrooms that were allowed to be open were DISGUSTING. The soap was almost always out, there was ALWAYS a sink (out of the two sinks in the bathroom) broken, and cockroaches everywhere. Reminder that there are 8+ bathrooms, but only 2 were ever really open. Just stupid and silly. Just because there are a few bad apples who use the bathroom to skip class doesn't mean that the rest of the school population should suffer. It doesn't just end there though. It took months of student advocating for there to be a porta potty installed at the track. Hundreds of students use the school's outdoor sports facilities throughout the year (track, xc, softball, baseball, tennis, badminton, soccer, etc) and there was no bathroom near there for a long time. Oftentimes after school, the closest bathrooms (the locker rooms which are still ~.25 mile away from the track) were closed. While the porta potties were eventually implemented, they were CHAINED shut and padlocked. The school has a great student life and I made a lot of memories and lifetime friends here, but the bathroom situation was so horrible it gives this school -2 stars.

We notified the office about the incident and there was nothing they could really do but advised us to buy again on whatever leftover yearbooks that they had which were only 10 copies. My child properly lined up to buy a copy when a group of 8th graders came and cut off all the students who waited patiently. One girl even ended up buying 5. They should've limit 1 copy per student. And whoever teacher was in charge at that yearbook sale should've kept an eye on the line. Such a disorganization and disappointment! Also, this school have kids bullying and intimidating other kids. Parents please choose caution when picking this school for your child/children. I almost wanted to believe that the students of this school improved till this incident happened to us.

I noticed the bruises the next day in the morning and went straight to the principal (Dr. Carilo) I told her everything that was going on she couldn't believe it and told me she would investigate and call me later. That same day Dr. Carillo questioned my daughter about the situation the principal intimidated my daughter and made her cry and told her she's the one coming to school she needs to fix her own problems and not involve the parents!!! I went straight to the cops and of course had to let the district know too! The principal and staff changed the story and stated my daughter got the bruising from the monkey bars which she doesn't play that and also stated that one of my daughters friends pushed her and made the bruises, and when the cops asked for the videos from the school cameras they stated the cameras didn't capture the location of where the incident happened. The case was dropped!

So then the students who are more geared towards the "humanities" subjects end up feeling inadequate when comparing themselves to their peers who are more gifted in the STEM subjects. So if I could give any advice to perspective parents it would be... "JUST BECAUSE A SCHOOL IS CONSIDERED 'GOOD,' DOESN'T MEAN IT'S 'GOOD' FOR YOUR PARTICULAR CHILD." You know your child. Do they excel at reading and writing, but despise math and science? Well I can guess that they probably won't magically change their stance on that now. So parents, please listen to your child if they're the kind of kid who favors the humanities subjects, before forcing them into an environment that will only stifle what little confidence they might have in the STEM fields.

The summer following Kindergarten, she was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia. On the recommendation from a coworker, we toured the Merryhill school. From the outset, we were impressed. The curriculum was on par with the other school, and the diversity of the experience was clearly wide ranging. Once the school year started it became even more clear that the principal was highly engaged with all the students, and that between her and the teachers, they would bend over backwards to assure that the accommodations necessary for my daughter were in place. Unlike my daughter's former school, we were able to work with her teachers to assure that through her school work and tests, she could demonstrate what she had learned, instead of putting her into a cookie-cutter educational system that tests in only one way and does not accommodate for her needs. As she has entered the third grade, we could not be more thrilled with the Merryhill experience and the staff at the school. My daughter has gone from hating school to not being able to get enough. Her grades continue to maintain at the highest level and she scored above her grade level in standardized testing. Her confidence in both her academics and her social interactions continues to grow. I sincerely believe this is in big part due to the efforts of the Merryhill staff. While every school and every environment is not for every student, parents should be doing their due diligence in assessing the most appropriate direction for their child.
