Update 04-29-2012…read more Biking up Hutchins St past Legion Park, I noticed a Tennis Ball across the street from the Tennis Courts in the Park. Couldn't throw it back... because all the Tennis Players were gone. Took back the brand new Ball to Joe, my Dog.... Kept him busy for hours. Thank you... inept Tennis Players... Original Review 04-01-2008 Where to go to play Tennis in Lodi? And at night? My favorite place is at Legion Park on Hutchins street. There are four courts, AND there is also night lighting! In Lodi, there is also Kofu Park, about a mile West of Legion Park with 5 courts and a couple of tennis hitting walls and courtside bench seating... but Kofu attracts a "different" type of park goer. And Kofu is aimed more for larger group sports activities such as baseball and skateboarding. The second reason why I like this small park is that there is a small grove of tall trees at the West end of the park. The shade produced by those trees is sooooo inviting in the Summer! Just makes you want to set up a hammock and start taking a nap. Kofu Park, on the other hand, looks so HOT in the Summer... There is absolutely no trees... you can't put up trees near a baseball diamond or near a skateboarding course! I've always grown up equating a park with trees! Another reason why I dislike Kofu Park is the Lodi Municipal Garage situated right next to the park! There are City of Lodi vehicles that can include cop cars, city vehicles... essentially anything motorized that is owned by the City of Lodi, that passes right by the Tennis Courts. Sometimes the congestion is awful! Legion Park, also known as American Legion Park, also has a small playground for the little tykes in the family. Other sports activities is a basketball court (enclosed). There is also a picnic / barbecue area (3 picnic tables) for city park picnics or outside get-togethers. I understand that reservations are required, though. More family oriented that most other parks in Lodi, without the vagrancy prevalent in the more isolated parks in Lodi. Small enough that no member of your family would get lost, and more than enough type of activities to keep you busy. Note that night Tennis only until 11pm. Where to play Tennis if all the Tennis Courts in Lodi are filled? Get a list of apartment complexes that have lit courts... just act like you're a resident, and you've got it made!

Stones are placed like words in a poem. Shrubs and trees are trimmed with a kind of care that doesn't demand attention but rewards it. The koi pond stretched wide before us, its greenish water mirroring the trees above. A red-arched bridge crossed the pond, its reflection curved like a crescent moon. Beneath it, koi swam slowly, their bodies moving with the kind of grace that comes only from age and stillness. Some were huge -- decades old, perhaps -- with glistening scales and slow, mindful movement. Not darting like goldfish, but gliding like something wiser than sound. I stood on the bridge for a while, watching a large golden koi with a scar-like marking across its back. I love the serenity and peace.

Located on the grounds of Micke Grove Park, this Japanese garden is 3 acres which is smaller than…read morethe Japanese Garden in Fresno, but I thought it was quainter and more shaded. I loved the red bridge over the pond and the sounds of the waterfall. It's very calm and meditative to walk around. Besides the pond area there was a large grassy area to walk around as well as a teahouse which looked quite large and was only open for special events. I even saw a cat roaming around here! Maybe he lives in the garden. Micke Grove Park is rather large and has a lot of things going on. I'd recommend the rose garden afterwards which is close to the Japanese Garden.

There are lots of great places to take your dog in this area, but Beckman Park is one of our…read morefavorite. This park offers huge off leash areas for your dog to play and even one specifically for small dogs. We usually let our small dog play in one of the many large areas where bigger dogs are, but on quiet days or days when she's a little more tired, we bring her to the small dog area and she has a blast there too. There are public restrooms and lots and lots of green grass and trees. They offer pet waste bags and there is plenty of room to roam, so even if you have a dog that doesn't come to the park for socialization, there will still be plenty of area for them to run free and have a little solitary fun! There is street parking with good proximity to the many entrances and the fences and gates are secure so you can feel safe. We have never had any issues with other dogs or other pet owners and I highly recommend checking out this park if you have a dog.

Unfortunately, dog parents are not good about picking up after their dogs even though dog poop bags are provided along with plenty of trash cans throughout park. Also, some dog parents are not experienced so sometimes dogs will show dominance and not be corrected. It's unfortunate that a few bad people can ruin the experience for the rest of us considerate responsible dog owners!!
