I have some experience sewing - crafts and bags and basic costumes - but I have only sewed sleeves once and had a rough time. I purchased a private lesson from Ross with enough time (I thought) to sew a cosplay costume (shirt and pants) for my 9 year old son. I brought along my uncut patterns and fabric. Ross started off by showing me how to properly pin and cut the pattern. We moved on to sewing and she gave me some great tips for sewing small hems and the sleeves. We did not finish the shirt and did not even start the pants. Ross checked the pants pattern and recommended a Simpicity pattern for pajama pants - they ended up being perfect and were so much easier than the knickers pattern I had. Ross went over how to finish the sleeves with elastic, but I left with so much confidence that I added buttoned cuffs to the sleeves. My son and I were extremely happy with the results. I purchased a semi-private sewing class for myself and my sister in law, but because of our schedules, our husbands ended up taking the class with Ross Anna instead of us! Ross Anna worked patiently with me to schedule a time and offered both an at-home visit or her studio in Costa Mesa as options. Both guys have little to no experience with a sewing machine, but the finished product they brought home was quite amazing. If there is something in particular you want to make, I recommend bringing the pattern and specific fabric/materials you need to make it. Ross Anna will work with you on it. Otherwise, she has specific projects to suggest based on your skill level and some basic supplies to share. You can always email her ahead of the class if you have any questions. Had a dog frisbee made of canvas that I wanted to duplicate. This was my first sewing project ever. It has a foam layer in the middle, and hard plastic cord around the edging to help keep the shape. My first attempt from Youtube learning was okay, but had some problems, and took me 8-10 hours to make. My second attempt, I couldn't get the sizing of things right. My hopes weren't high that I could find somebody that could help fill in all the pieces I was missing and I wasn't really looking to make clothes, so a group lesson wasn't making sense for me. I hear circles aren't easy to sew, either. Combine that with canvas, foam layer, and hard plastic cording, and I wasn't finding many that could help with what I wanted to do. Found Rossanna, and was surprised when she said she could help with that. And was impressed when I asked what I should bring with me after signing up for a 2 hour private lesson. She said just bring everything you have, and we'll go from there. To me, that's a sign of a person that really knows what she's doing. And she does. She taught me how to make the pattern, and the important concepts to know when making patterns for circles. And then taught me some better/quicker ways to go about sewing it all together. Went from start to finish in just under 2 hours, and learned many good things along the way. Those 2 hours with Rossanna will save me many hours of trial, error and frustration on future projects. And even though I just met her for the first time this afternoon, it feels like I just spent the afternoon with a friend. Today I took a starter lesson with Ross- Anna. She's located behind Orange County Fine Arts Center across from South Coast Plaza. My sewing machine is 25 years old and I've not used it since I bought it, so I needed a tutorial on the machine, and some instruction on how to do basic straight and zigzag stitches. BEWARE OF THE OWNER This woman is the WORST! AS WAS MY EXPERIENCE WITH HER AND HER BUSINESS. I had been talking with her for two days trying to set up private sewing classes at my home. I had made a tentative appointment I did sense arrogance from her from the 1st phone call but it's been difficult finding a person to teach at my home. I wanted to get both of my machines serviced before my class so I told her if I could arrange it before next Wednesday the 21st So I could keep the appointment and I would start then. When I asked if there was anything else available she kept saying no this is the only day until mid August. But earlier when I said I wanted weekly classes she made no mention of her schedule or " vacation time" I called her around 2:00 to let her know I was able to get my machines back in time for the class and she said to hold on. The phone went dead! Disconnected no she hung up!! I immediately text her and said please call me back 30 minutes went by no call no response. I then called again and had to leave a 2nd voice mail because she didn't answer. It's now 3 hours and she has totally ignored me. What kind of person let alone business owner would act this way and for what reason??? Something is seriously wrong with her with this kind of behavior. Maybe she does need a vacation because she's getting Burt out as a sewing teacher!!! Maybe I was lucky I didn't waste your money or time with her. I think it's time you put away your SINGER MACHINE and retire Ross Anna. U just don't treat people this way! I really think she was a little jealous when I told her I owned two Bernina machines! Lol. Like all other reviews here, I cannot say enough great things about Rossanna. I came to my first sewing class with a little dream in my heart of starting a clothing line for little girls. Not knowing where to start, I researched yelp and decided on booking some private sewing classes with Rosanna to brush up on my sewing skills. Very early into my first sewing class, it was apparent that Rosanna knew a great deal about patterns and easily and quickly helped me alter a vintage pattern I had. She was a patient teacher and very flexible in scheduling me in as I am a very busy working mom and she is quite busy as well. She even came to my house when I didn't have childcare! After a few lessons, Rosanna began to help me develop some patterns from my sketched out designs. Her knowledge and development of patterns has been invaluable in starting my little line for girls. Rossanna is a fantastic instructor. Not only is she a total pro but she is very friendly and lots of fun. Her laid back style makes the class feel very casual and more like a sewing circle than a formal lesson. However, don't let this make you believe you won't learn a lot, because you will. I can't believe how much I've picked up in the three classes I've taken with her. I take her class at Piecemakers but I know she also teaches many group lessons in other locations. I've been in the class with three other people and she's very attentive with all of us. I started as a total beginner and now know enough to use a machine to sew my daughter's Girl Scout badges. Believe me, this is an accomplishment! The other women in the class are more advanced than I am, but also started as beginners and are now making lovely clothes.
