As read over the current reviews, we need to consider Upsahl's(Opsahls) deserves a chance? Things always change and sometimes get better! What's really going on here? Long lost kindness and compassion from three different server-bartenders, last few visits. It helps if come ready to be patient and kind as well. You know. What is really going on here? New owners and a detailed security system with eyes absolutely everywhere. For customer viewing; makes a difference! You may want to check it out soon. What's really going on here? Be willing to wait especially on weekends for table or carryout. This place is super busy now. A recent witness to cook staff improvements and owner efforts! Do like when my beloved brother stumbled at the door, someone stopped to help him up. A real good human spirit is alive and well right here. The food was delicious and well worth the wait! Get someone else to answer the phone, the individual put me on hold, twice, for over two minutes. I was trying to order on a Tuesday, a big company order, for Friday, three shifts of workers. Trash. The pizza was trash. It was so sloppy, disgusting, and not even cut correctly. There was so much flour and burnt on the bottom of the crust. No flavor and sloppy sloppy sloppy. Food was excellent. Staff was courteous and polite. Great place for a sandwich. The Italian beef was very good.

Customer service was great, food was done on time. The pizza itself was good, but I wish they were more consistent on their toppings. Some pieces had all the toppings and some had none. My best bud in college was from Rockford, Illinois, and we'd go down there on occasion; I returned with him a little later in life for his first (of 4) wedding, and when he relocated from Rockford to San Jose. He invited several of us to help with that move, unfortunately, he bought several cases of beer PRIOR to us helping, so you know how that went. Then he and I headed across country in his 240-Z testing its upper limits of MPH, and that tale has a number of anecdotes that don't belong on a G-Rated website. Back then, Rockford was really a blue collar, manufacturing town, producing heavy machinery, furniture, and even bombs for awhile. These days the largest employers are hospitals and government, tho twenty miles east, in Belvidere, IL there has been a huge Chrysler plant for a number of decades. Currently they are puking out some Jeep models. During our visits, we used to hit a favorite dive bar of his, and I went in search of it during a recent drive through town. It's still there, but no longer qualifies as a 'dive,' the menu is all chi-chi now and they even take reservations. So I zipped around in search of a new dive bar, and found one on the south side of the city, "Opsahl's Tavern." It's on the southern edge of the city, just a bit off US 20. I think it fits all the requisite definitions for a dive bar, no fancy interior, a crowd of regulars early in the morning, in a constant state of remodeling, bits and pieces to be installed sitting around. But they have a very pretty menu and are "famous for their burgers and pizza." So I ordered a pizza. My usual, sausage, green olives, double cheese, thin crust. Double cheese was a mistake as they are very generous with the cheese in the first place. This is a pie with a lot of sauce, and it's flavorful. Sausage chunks were a nice size, and the sliced olives were the "Sicilian style" (marinated and herb-y) that pizzeria supply houses sell, and I like a lot. My pic of the pie is not as pretty as it was in real life -- as I had a pizza catastrophe going out to the car - I dropped the box. Which tended to shift some of the toppings - drastically. I didn't actually cry, but I could have. Anyway, it's a great pizza. The local radio station apparently did a review, he wasn't as enthused as I was, course I'm the expert, aren't I? I've been a customer there for 5 years but they gave me a pizza at home that had burnt cheese on it overcooked and I asked for mushrooms and they must have ran out and gave me the tiniest little minced pieces of mushroom. When I called them about it they said they'd gladly give me a credit for a free one next time. That was about 3 weeks ago so I called for it tonight and they were acting really fishy about it almost as if they knew that they were full of s*** in fact I know they knew it because they were treating me like I was wrong. So coincidentally I ran into someone who used to work there and she said yeah they are really sketchy and they pull that one all the time . Absolutely no doubt about it that this is the City's best Dive Bar around... Who could argue with one of the Best Burgers in the Rockford area and always great prices and the COLDEST Beer's !!! My go to days have always been Tuesday and Thursday when they have a Bud Light Can Special.. It's a tough call on what to order with the killer Pizza and outstanding daily specials and you can't forget about the Friday Fish Fry... I'm 60 years old now and have been stopping by Opshal's since I was 18 and one thing for sure is the fact that the Food has stayed the same all these years !!! The best pizza in Rockford, hands down. It's greasy, theirs a good sauce to cheese to topping ratio (weird but I like balance), and it's delicious. I've had it many times and will have it many times more. Also the calzones are humungous. read more

Opsahls is known for having the Big Kahuna pizza, which is 24" of deliciousness. Its also known as a tavern so I went to check it out on my lunch. I ordered the double cheese burger. Stereotypically, you should order a pizza at a pizza joint; but I had other cravings. I know there pizza is good but I went outside the box and wasn't disappointed. There burger was pretty good. It actually has a fresh meat patty that was NOT flash frozen in a box like other places. The burger itself was very juicy and it came with the normal mustard, ketchup, onions. I would consider the burger a hidden gem at this pizza place. The location has plenty of parking but the building itself kind of looks like a house because the entrance was in the back which had a storm/screen door before actually going into the tavern/pizza place. Its very dim inside but it gives you the tavern feel. Overall, this place may look non traditional but it has good pizza and a juicy burger I would not underestimate. read more

Awful service! Ordered food. It came an hour and a half later. Cold, wrong topping, and items missing. When I called. They refused to refund the full order and stated that it would be another hour and a half minimum for the missing items to be delivered because they were busy. When I asked for a refund and told them they could come get the food ( which was wrong) they stated that they would not do that. There is no manager there and that if I want a refund to call back tomorrow. So to recap... Wrong cold food after an hour and a half. Refusal to make it right and I didn't get items I paid for. Two of us went to Opsahl's yesterday but found it was closed although Mapquest said that it was open yesterday, Christmas Day. We went back there today. I walked in and asked where we were to go to eat s I did not see anything but a bar when we walked in. The barmaid just walked away without answering me. We found a couple of tables to sit at and figured someone would be coming to see if he or she could take an order from us. They have a popcorn machine there so I got a couple of trays of popcorn figuring someone would come to the table. No one came. I thought to myself that they were rather unfriendly there and I would eat the two trays of popcorn. I figured that if no one came by the time I finished the popcorn, someone would be by to take an order. I finished the popcorn. No one came. I thought that maybe the barmaid would ask if we needed something when she saw us leaving. No one said anything. They lost money by not serving us anything and by word of mouth about how friendly they are not. read more

Ordered Cheese Bread got Cheese fries had it delivered it was 9:00 they said that was the last delivery of the night, they said we can have two cheese breads for mix up but next day they argued and said no we only get the one now we have to pay another delivery charge for their mix up. Next day pizza and wanted our cheese bread like we paid for but instead again got plain fries and pizza had to pay for delivery again. Talked to owner and she was very disrespectful and rude said the cook said he put it in there no he put fries in there then asked if we can come get it we called delivery cause no way there. So we will not be coming back no more there are so many pizza places out there that value customers and way better food instead of mediocre food horrible place to deal with read more

Worst customer service ever. The b*tch answering the phone is the most unprofessional and rudest person we've ever dealt with in our lives. She refused to give the phone to a manager or supervisor claiming they aren't there. You can't run A restaurant and bar serving liquor without a manager or owner on duty. As far as the interior of Opsahl's, it is very much a dive and pretty questionable. We live just down the street and order take-out often. The only thing I personally have ever ordered is the Gyro with Onion Rings. The lamb is perfectly seasoned and piled high. The onion rings are also great and they give you so many, you'll have to share with someone. My partner always gets the pizza, and I've tried it (it's great) They have a good sized menu, my only qualm is about dining there. This is more of a bar, it's extremely loud and you may even have to put up with some drunks while you wait. Based only on the food, I'd give them 4 stars. Based on the look and aesthetic cleanliness and service I have to go with a 3. The staff seem to have a bit of an attitude, which is probably a requirement in a bar setting in this neighborhood. read more

First ordered the pizza at 730 (approx).....got total for a large two topping pizza to be delivered that was on special for $12.99 - it was $21.20. So basically $8.21 for txes and delivery....wow...but okay I had heard good things. After WAITING an HOUR & TWENTY minutes the kids and adults were beyond hungry I call Opsahls to find out the status of our order and after Nother 5 minute hold get told by the owner the pizza's been ready for a while he doesn't know where the driver is what can he do...well I told him in my opinion find your driver or get in your car and deliver some pizzas. When I promptly demanded a refund the driver showed up....another 20 minutes later a dried out crust with a huge puddle of grease showed up for dinner. This is what is supposed to pass as pizza. Perhaps they are under new management? We will never try or recommend Opsahls to another person ever (unless we don't like them of course). Bad service bad food....just BAD! read more

I was sitting for 6 kids so I decided to get the kahuna. I took one of the kids with me (11) and that was a big mistake. You have to walk through the bar to get to the pickup window. Shady bar with drunk people at 6 pm. The entrance is shady and the patrons are shady. The whole place is shady. Pizza was greasy and not cut well. Which doesn't seem like a big deal but for a 24 inch pizza it is. Bottom line is don't bring your kids when you pick up the good. read more

Date 5-2-2016 Time 11:00am I am a diabetic, and those who know anything about this , know a person can become confused and feel odd when the blood sugar is too high. That being said. I called to order lunch, something I figured was as healthy as I could get considering I didnt have time to make lunch for myself and my sugar was sky high. I was not feeling well and asked about "the hot beef dinner" and the lady at the other end of the phone at Opshals told me they would not deliver a hot beef dinner because it didnt cost enough money and it was a $4.00 delivery fee. She asked my address at work and I gave it to her saying, they have delivered to me before, and she was rather snotty to me. If you add the cost of the dinner which is $5.75( todays special ) and $4.00 delivery plus tax lets call it a round $10.00 plus $3.00 tip. She assumed something and just COST her Boss $13.00 and a customer. Not many places in my area deliver. I chose them because they have been so nice before. I've ordered Mostaccioli and the whole order with delivery was $13.83. I ordered just 2 tacos $1.50 each and chili( cant find the price) and they both cost less than the Hot beef dinner and they delivered that to me SO what is the Minimun order amount for delivery?. The food has always been great and it was helpful since today I did not have my car and thought I could get something for lunch. Why did I write this? Becasue As I hung up, she told me I was hard to hear and as I spoke up to say, I would not order today, I heard as she was hanging up a loud "WOW" like I had bothered her. So deciding not to order because I dont want spit in my food, I went hungry, blood sugar is still sky high, I need some protien and couldn't count on Opshals to be of any service to me, nor did they want my money. I love pizza and I think there's is probably one of the worst I've had next to olive garden. If you plan on getting food from here I suggest delivery or cary out as the bar itself smells like you are sitting in a sewer.
