We definitely look forward to each time we go and have been going here for 10+ years. In winter the fireplace is going and keeps it nice and warm. With two dining areas and outside seating (with a heated area too), there is a bit of room for groups and recommend booking for any special event. The food is always good and prepared using fresh, local ingredients. Recommend the Pork Medallions and any fish dish available. The cook is humble but gifted. You can also reserve a room as well. We do so when we have friends or family in. This is the only place we go to for the all year round. We rate this pub very highly for its warm and welcoming atmosphere, the staff are always friendly and understand customer service very well. This has to be the best beer garden I have seen, with a lovely brook running through middle and water/marginal planting which looks amazing. The staff are very efficient at carrying out your meals from the main building, across the bridge, to your outdoor table. Inside there are plenty of windows to look out onto the garden. We had a dog with us and the waiter immediately brought out a bowl of water (silver service style), so they were very dog friendly. The menu was really good featuring local produce and a variety of cuisines. The restaurant is a little pricey but this does reflect the amazing setting and garden. The reviews appeared to be good on both but sometimes you just never know with reviews. However, this time I'm happy to report that both sites were correct. Bill's was absolutely busy when we stepped in for a late breakfast/early lunch timeframe. We were greeted promptly and sat at a table for two. To our delight, we were able to order from both the breakfast or lunch menus, so that is what we did. My husband got the full breakfast and I got chicken entree with vegetables. Service was attentive and prompt. It shows that they are a good chain restaurant because of the care and organization that is evident in how they run their establishment. Decor is comfortable and interesting and I was glad to see servers working hard - not just standing around. While we don't come down this way to Newbury often, if we ever do again (and we may to go to Winchester Cathedral) we'll probably make Bill's our stop and go to for good food. A paid car park is around the block and close by so no worries on parking either!

I have to confess that I find it a little insulting to have a couple of slices of Genius bread given as a substitute for, as we could see on other tables, a gorgeous baked baguette that is beautifully warmed. This does not constitute an acceptable replacement for the glutenous part of the 'normal' dishes. Stale cardboard bread aside, the French onion soup was nice. I wasn't over balled by its flavour at first but a touch more seasoning and it was more suited to my palette, if not just a little bitter. My dining adventure finished with the Bouillabaisse. What a mistake on my part, I would usually take a little more care and attention in how I describe something I have eaten but on this occasion I believe I could summarise in a few exacting words; over cooked, under seasoned and broken shell shards. I would like to say that I will be back and would love to give them a second chance, after all everyone has an off night and perhaps this was just one of those nights. But in reality I have to confess this is unlikely to happen, a disappointing meal, for two, for around £60 is one that I would prefer not to have to experience again in the future.
