I decided after a few times that I am not a huge fan of improv comedy shows. I went to the murder mystery show and it was just okay. I laughed a little bit,but it didn't change my mind on improv comedy as a whole. I'm not planning on going back anytime soon for that reason. Please make up your own mind and give them a chance. The weekend-long festival showcases both feature-length and short films, all of which have a Latino director, cast, and/or perspective. The Guadalupe Theater is the perfect place for this event, with the virgin candle exterior and a huge tiered auditorium. I really appreciate how laid back this was, from volunteers staffing the concessions and ticketing areas to friendly fellow attendees. For the 2018 featured films, I was able to catch a few of the shorts showcased on Sunday afternoon- many featured female directors, and several were on hand for a brief Q&A session at closing. While they were all quality films, many (unsurprisingly) focused on immigration and the struggle to stay in the US. The closing feature film, Summer 1993 (Spain's official submission for the 90th Academy Awards), was better than I expected given the 10-year old protagonist and a running time over 90 minutes of Catalan with English subtitles- worth a viewing if you can find it. I would say that film formatting could have been checked- some of the subtitles for certain films were so low to the bottom of the screen that they were very difficult to see, which seems like it shouldn't be that hard to adjust if it had been noticed ahead of time. What an amazing opportunity! Sunday was the closing night and my plus one and I got to enjoy a…read moreshort film and a full film, and even an after party. The event was a smidge behind schedule, but that was okay as we got to meet with Jesse Borrego. To be honest, he walked past us a few times, gave him a few polite nods, waves, and handshakes, but it wasn't until he started speaking to the Yelp crowd when I nudged my friend saying, "He sounds familiar..." to which he whipped out his pamphlet, turned a few pages, looked up at Jesse, back down to the pamphlet, and back up to Jesse, then exclaiming, "Oh my God!" Yes, we're two slow dorks. The theater was lovely and the films were interesting. The short film was intense! And the second (Summer 1993) was very adorable, heart warming, and tugged on the heartstrings. A couple of folks I spoke to after the movie ended said they held back a few sniffles. Soon we were ushered across the street for the after party with tapas and Sangria. Though tiny, the bites were delicious, and my friend and I got seconds on the sangria. The chef did rush us along though, I did glance a side eye at the slight rudeness of his tone, but I brushed it off. We danced a little bit to Selena before calling it a night. Overall it was very fun and very different from a usual Yelp Experience, but I am so glad I went!

I will say if you go for an orchestra, avoid the lower orchestra outer edge seats as there's no exit aisle. You have to walk past your entire row to get to the spot if you are a bigger man. Most shows will have an intermission which allows you to get up, use RR, grab a quick snack and get back to your seat in time for the action. Modern meets classic. Classic exterior, modern exterior and interior. I suggest coming for a classical music performance and when coming with a date, sit in the mezzanine. Great view and feels more intimate.

Prepaid garage or valet parking options are available as well as a convenient parking lot a short walk away. The show was loud, especially for an acoustic performance, but the sound quality was great. Overall, there is a variety of price points, so you can splurge on club seating with table service, or choose the balcony to save the piggy bank. We sat in the mezzanine section however next time I would prefer to sit closer to the stage. While some of the ticket prices were on the high side, you can sign up for the newsletter to receive discounts on upcoming shows. The price of drinks was outrageous but sadly typical for a concert. I did not order food or beverages but be sure you view the menu / price list ahead of your visit. There was no meet & greet or photo opportunity offered for this event but I hope that is an option at future events. Definitely consider the Tobin when your favorite band is in town!

Their popularity is a result of people searching for peaceful outlets to indulge their creative endeavors. Corazones on Fire, "Painting with a Cultural Edge" is an amazing art space in the Deco District that recognizes our need for us to connect artistically. It is located right across the street from Pancake Joe's on Donaldson Street. The space itself is quite charming with a colorful lighting that makes you feel welcome. Deborah Kuetzpal Vasquez, a visual arts professor at Our Lady of the Lake and Bianca Sapet both owners welcome you also and lead you through the process. A painting area is designated for you with all the necessary items that you will use for the night: easel, an apron, paints, brushes, cleaning glass and of course a canvas with a stenciled graphic of the evenings theme. I must confess my painting skills are to a minimal. Rembrandt, Picasso I certainly am not. However Deborah noticing my initial nervousness came up to my table and said, "You'll do just fine." As you are taken through the painting project all your senses are being engaged. One thing that I really appreciated was the excellent playlist playing throughout the night. Music by Malo, Juan Gabriel, Julieta Venegas, The Cardigans and even an impromptu song by Bianca made the experience even more memorable. Another detail I liked were the historical art lessons you are given while painting. For example it was interesting to learn that Pre-Columbian Civilization used natural occurrences to explain human behaviors. Thus the evenings themed piece of the Huitzil Hummingbird and the Xochitl Flower wasn't really about a bird nor a flower but was a metaphor for "mating." I would be remiss if I didn't include that it is BYOB. Other patrons brought wine, some sort of liquor and snacks. But after a few of my trusty beers the paint brush was feeling mighty limber and loose. All and all I had a memorable experience. Professor Vasquez is an amazing instructor who walks you through every step, from start to finish. She is very patient but encourages you to find your own artistic voice. This place is perfect for novice painters like me, would be awesome for a date night or for the person who just wants to reconnect creatively in a relaxed atmosphere. ps. At the end of night you take a group picture with your painting. Lucky for me I hid in the back to cover up my artistic shortcomings.

We had a quick bag check at the entrance and onto the ticket attendants who were friendly. We sat in Balcony aisle seats in Row KK. I've sat in this area before. My aisle seat was a little obstructed for the stage view by the railing that had a solid design so I had to lean forward most of the time. The other seats next to me on the railing have a design but you can see thru. No one is sitting in front of you but a lot of people will be walking or standing as it's a thoroughfare. Sound system was great & not too loud even in the back but it's probably because this band mainly played ballads. Beautiful venue with colorful up lighting on the ceiling. The theater still has a nostalgic feel to it & very pretty. Bathrooms were clean and I'd say the only thing I think they need an upgrade on are the seats as they're cushiony and sagging a little. Leather upgrades would be better at some point. Cocktails & drinks are pretty pricey. I think a cocktail was about $21/$23. People were singing along and it was a good & enthusiastic crowd. Concert was 1.5 hours long & the main singer had to take a voice-break for about 10 minutes. A violin performer was outside of the venue playing Air Supply hits and people were singing along which was fun. To note, attendants said you could videotape & take photos but without a flash or they'll flag you. Also, the attendants aren't allowed to take your photos so you'll have to ask another attendee. Parking in the Houston Street Parking Garage is a half block down, just a $10 flat rate for the evening and very conveniently located to The Majestic.

Bravissimo! The San Antonio Symphony is one of SA's…read moretreasures! Our quaint little town has an incredible symphony- just like the big cities! We have the full ensemble, with flutes, harps, violins- you name it! Yea, these guys aren't paid nearly enough for the amount of hours that they put in to bring you the finest classical music, but they're doing it because it's what they love doing. The symphony is amazing because they not only play the sleepy Brahms and perennial favorites like Beethoven, but they also do the Classical Pops series, where they play stuff like Star Wars night, or film scores from other movies. They usually do a bunch of stuff that even the smallest of kids would recognize. However, for the enjoyment of others, leave those kids at home. The symphony plays at the Tobin regularly, but they also do other events around town at the Majestic and other events. Yea, the Symphony did declare bankruptcy a few years ago, but since they managed to restructure, they have risen from the ashes like a phoenix, and are better than ever!

While the SA Symphony doesn't have the man-power and star-power of the symphonies like the SF Symphony, the symphony holds its own and provides a great show for any music-lover. And, if you're a student, the SA Symphony is especially kind and offers a great deal for you (see below, "Pricing"). The Music: The SA Symphony showcases a good variety of music throughout the season with the usual favorites of Beethoven, Mozart, Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, etc. and even ventures to highlight some contemporary pieces throughout. They tend to do themes with regards to composers, so that helps if you can't make the November concert, you can catch that your favorite composer next month! And beyond classical, the SA Symphony also does fun events like holiday pops, a highlight of Broadway musical favorites, and even a Sci-Fi tribute show. The Orchestra: I think the orchestra is lovely and produces good sound given its smaller size. The conductor Sebaastian Lang-Lessing is just so much fun to watch and he really adds zest to classical music. You can tell that the orchestra (and the conductor) both love what they do. The Pricing: Here's the big catcher for me: $8 student tickets for any seat available in the house! Wow! I've brought crowds of friends to the symphony, and we can enjoy a night of great music without making a huge dent in our pockets. It really makes for a nice way to get out of study mode and do something right-brained. Just make sure to bring your ID with you when you purchase tickets. I usually buy the whole batch day of an hour before the show starts and hand out tickets to my friends; really works out great. The Ambiance (The Majestic Theatre): The acoustics in the Majestic Theatre are great and really give you the full sound of the orchestra, especially if you sit on the mezzanine level. I feel that sitting on the main floor doesn't really give you the full sound experience, although the pricing is more expensive. If you have time, take a look around the theatre and taken in the intricate architecture - I always see something new every time I go. And, for those of you who like to spice things up, there is a cash bar on both floors. Tips: There's parking right next to the theatre (the parking garage at the first right after you pass the Majestic on Houston) for $10.00 if you don't want to circle for street parking. Sit in the mezzanine for the full sound effect and bring binoculars if you want to see things up close and personal. Hope you check the SA Symphony out!
