    The entry

I came here Sunday with a group of over sixty women, we are into the arts and helping in our community with various projects. I'd recommend Overtime to a wide audience! There's no off putting swearing or otherwise offensive content! It's very comfortable in the seating area because the chairs are above the stage. My recommendation is to step carefully off the small step or you'll risk falling. It's not brightly lit and it's not expected to be lit up; it's a staging area. They do offer popcorn and Chardonnay or mimosa, the actors are very believable and you could fall in LOVE with them because they can tug at your heart strings! Todays theme was about the plight of UNHOUSED or homeless people who had, ostensibly, fallen on hard times. This day and age it's easy to fall on the hard times and the presentation drives that point home. There are two bathrooms for everyone to use on intermission and they're clean and well maintained. The venue does require looking around or even calling for directions since the plaza is a maze with lots of closed or open offices. It's probably more money than a movie, which cost me 26.00 at the draft house for an old movie and wine and popcorn. Actually, the presentation here was under twenty dollars and I helped out with a few more dollars for a contribution.

After making arrangements to catch a production of "the Decorator" this weekend, it occurred to me that I haven't looked up local theater's in town to see what other Yelper's have posted. Much to my surprise, the highly praised Overtime Theater wasn't listed on Yelp so I'm penning this review quickly for others to pen their thoughts on the performance space. I've been attending Overtime Theater performances (improve nights/original theater productions) since I moved to town and when they were located over on West Ave. They're now tucked away into the Blue Star Complex and I can say that it's a lot easier to visit, park your car and attend a performance. The space is very cozy... with about 35 or 40 seats. They put on incredible little productions for an incredible price. Make it a point to support them if you get a chance.

My husband and I came here for the first time on Friday to see a friend of ours perform and we had a fun experience. It's a very small theatre that seats 50-150 people depending on what the performance is. It's a very intimate setting where you really get an up close and personal feel of the performance. They do serve sodas and popcorn. Popcorn is free, while the sodas are from a vending machine. They serve beer for a donation of your choosing. The actors do not get paid for their time, so at the end of the night, you can donate if you wish for their performance. The only unfortunate thing is that this place is closing it's doors come next Monday. They're moving to a new location off of 410 and Bandera if I remember correctly. Seven card Stud is playing their final performance this Friday-Sunday and it's based on the life of the famous playwriter Tennessee Williams. Go check it out and help them close out a great venue!

This theater is located in the Wonderland mall, downstairs by the food court, in the old movie theater space once called The Bijou. How they've renovated the space to house quality theater now is impressive. This place is officially in our radar and we can't wait to experience another show.

The Bijou, which was known for showing more art and independent movies and served food, is now the Wonder Theater. The play was the Wiz and was pretty good as far as community theater goes. Many of the plays for this season's lineup are geared towards children and are affordable. The ticket prices were: $36.00 adults, $26.00 seniors and $18.00 students and children. The lobby, concession stand and seating area have been revamped, and a small stage has been added. Seating is fairly spacious, with new seats and a very clean theater. The lobby area is similar to the Bijou's, with a small full serve concession stand, selling popcorn and other goodies. This locale is worth a visit if you are partial to theater, regardless of it being Broadway or community. Many of the shows are from Friday to Sunday, and are great way to spend the afternoon/evening.

With it being such a little stage i did not feel like i missed anything and was surprised how i could still get the feel of each scene. I am not by any means a theatre aficionado, but I'm a fan of fun, and this new little "360 degree…read moretheatre" is a blast. A friend got jazzed to see Rocky Horror, so I agreed to accompany. That's how I floated into this magical spot on their second weekend. I was unsure about the location in an old nightclub in a forgotten strip off Fredericksburg, but game for some Sweet Transvestite action. It's a small space; I believe "intimate" would be the proper euphemism. From the start of the show, I knew it would be entertaining, but I was pleasantly surprised HOW entertained I was. The production was spirited and clever and campy in all the right ways. The show was well cast, with the actors all pouring their hearts out, clearly having fun in the process. Being an 'intimate' theatre, the actors were available after, posing for pictures and chatting. That's when I learned a bit of background: the Roxie comes to us via a veteran of San Antonio theatre. The morning after, I did a little googlin' ... check out the Rivard Report's writeup: http://therivardreport.com/the-roxie-360-degrees-of-theatre-one-former-nightclub/ I'm sad the new owners of the Cameo don't get what a cool guy their buddy Jesus was, but there's truth to that "one door closes; another opens" bit; I'm excited to see how Roxie takes on stage in our big little town morphing into a proper city. San Antonio actors are lucky to have The Roxie, and so are we: get thee to the theatre to support this little upstart! What Mixtli is to the San Antonio food scene, the Roxie is to the Performing Arts: it's founded on the passion of a musical theatre geek, with a commitment to quality (if deliciously less "high minded"). Lucky for us, there are more seats than a "showing" at Mixtli. I can't wait to see what they'll dream up if they can pack the place with enthusiastic audiences. (I keep hearing Frank-n-furter sing "Don't dreeeaammm it / BeeEEE iiiit" in my head as I write this...) I'm going back for more! Refreshments served before show, at intermission, and probably after(?). Miller Lite, Coors Light, and Miller High Life (!) tallboys available for $5; Blue Moon tallboy, Busted Sandal's 210, and a coupla other flavors for $7. Wine $6.

The event runs for…read morefour *sweltering* Fridays each July and starts at 7:30pm sharp (jazz musicians are prompt, it's a fact - look it up if you don't believe me). Tips for your first visit: It takes place in the amphitheater right outside of the food court and movie theater. The audience is in the shade by 6:30pm but it's still HAWT - bring water folks! They usually have two or three performers, with the headliner going on at 9:00pm. No coolers allowed since they sell beer and wine at the event. People set up chairs 5 days before the event. If you have a small group of 5 or 6 peeps you can roll in around 630pm and get a decent spot. Not the best view, but still a good spot to chill out and listen to the tunes. VIP area available too - PM me for tips on sneaking into that - I only share it with select people LOL. ;-) Not sure if they have port-a-potties or not, but I recommend using the indoor facilities located in the food court, right behind Goomba's Pizza Food trucks and beer booths on the premises. If the lines are too long at those, mosey on inside to the food court and get something pretty quick (and enjoy the air conditioning). Look for the Balcones Heights Fire Department ladder truck - they give FREE rides in the bucket and you get to view the entire venue! Do it early, because they shut down before the concert is over. Final and MOST important tip: Stay out of the fountain - the po-po will shut your party down! :)

The only complaint I have... it's July... and it's HOT!!! I attended the first event of the year 07/07/17 with local bluesman Ruben V (featuring Melina) opening for Rick Braun. I love Ruben V as I have been a fan for many years. The headliner Rick Braun was amazing!!! So much energy! and I love watched him switch up his trumpets. Balcones Heights Jazz Festival is FREE!!! I'm all about free events!!! Outdoor seating on the amphitheater lawn is on a first-come, first-served basis. You many start sitting your chair out on Mon... but after the show on Fri night, you must take it with you. Then come back on Mon to set it up again. (I know, crazy right?! Other events that I know of will let you do it like earlier same day but having chairs sit out there all week is just asking for trouble! I'm sure they blow all over the place or could be stolen. It really just looks tacky. Sorry being honest here.) Food and beverages are available for purchase from local vendors at a variety of booths, as well as the food court just inside the doors of Wonderland of the Americas. BHJF is family friendly but probably not pet friendly so leave the fur babies at home. Just remember it's hot so come prepared for the heat and stay hydrated. The mall has plenty of parking but get there early for best parking. On my way out, I took a pic of the CPS electric plug in stations. NO cars were plugged in... and ALL cars were not electric. To me, that is not only rude but should be illegal. If I had an electric car and need a plug, I would have been pissed! Well, I'm still mad, and that is why I took a pic and bringing it up. I feel mall security needs to be on alert about that. (pic was not uploaded here but it's on the mall page https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=e9OYmJlKyoC2MakLnAPJog&userid=Upa-u-26_RVnjoFsIimjaw) A big shout out to the Balcones Heights and Wonderland of Americas for hosting this annual event for over 20 years. Balcones Heights Jazz Festival is such a great community event!
