I would give this convenience store -1 if I could!
I was at Circular Quay one day last week and my phone battery was dead. I forgot my lightning cord at home but had my power bank/external charger with me. As I was taking some guests to see Manly but at the same time, waiting for an important call, I decided that I would buy a lightning cord for $12.50 from the Opera Convenience Store. I purchased it from a man at the counter, clearly informing him that I planned to use it with my power bank. The packaging was a see-through plastic and had a sticker with the iphone models applicable printed on it. Unfortunately, upon returning to the ferry waiting area, I realised that the lightning cord fixed to my power bank was not charging my iphone 5.
I went back to Opera Convenience Store to see if the man at the counter could give me a replacement charger that was more useful. This time, a younger man, was also present. I went over to the counter and politely explained that the charger wasn't charging my phone when plugged to my power bank. The younger man raised his hand to the older man at the counter- suggesting that he will deal with me. He said "give me the charger" and plugged it into the plug point in the store, and said to me that it was charging my phone. I informed him that, however, it wasn't charging my phone when plugged into my power bank and demonstrated it to him. To which he said, this lightning cord can only be used to charge a phone from a plug point. I argued that, if the cord was being sold as an iphone charger, it should function like a regular iphone charger. Otherwise, they should perhaps clearly label that it only functions with power cords.
At this point, the younger man raised his voice and started yelling at me asking me how much I paid for it. I said, well, $12.50. At this point both men raised their voices and asked me if I knew how much an Apple lightning cord costs. I said yes, in fact I do know that it costs $30. The younger man said that I was wrong- it was $50. I said, no it's $30, and that is not the point. The point was, he sold me an iPhone charger, which was unable to function as one. Both men started yelling at me again asking me if I knew how much I paid for the charger, the younger man threw the charger at me and said that for $12.50, this is all the charger can do. I walked away from the two yelling men as I didn't think I could win an argument with the fools.
It isn't my problem that they were not selling original Apple chargers at $30, or I would've gladly bought them. My issue with them isn't that their $12.50 charger wasn't working- that's pretty much expected. My problem is that, they did absolutely nothing to help out a customer, and while I was being very polite they decide to yell and be rude at me to win the argument. I will never go back, and I think people like these having a business at a touristy spot like Circular Quay is an absolute embarrassment to the country. read more
