I had already paid in full, and my daughter was fitted with an expander that she wore for about a year and a half. I diligently followed the instructions, turning the key as instructed, and we attended all recommended check-ups. Then, one day, the expander--and the teeth it was attached to--came out entirely. I was concerned and immediately contacted an orthodontist friend in another state, who confirmed that this should not have happened. He advised us to see another orthodontist. At one point, my wires were left cut for several weeks until I advocated for them to be reconnected, which caused unwanted tooth movement and new gaps that were not present prior to surgery. When I requested a copy of my treatment plan and records, as is my right under HIPAA, the staff initially tried to charge me for access to my own medical notes. Only after I referenced HIPAA regulations did they provide the documents without further issue. When I scheduled a meeting with the office manager to express my concerns, her disposition became extremely defensive and unprofessional, and security was called without justification. During a later visit, I also had an uncomfortable encounter with Dr. Brown that left me feeling unsafe. Overall, I found the lack of communication, professionalism, and respect for patient rights very concerning. Since the procedure required special equipment, they warned me it might take a while. I initially agreed to this, but because of supplier complications and also a scheduling conflict it ended up being about six months before my actual braces procedure. By that time, I felt uneasy, especially since I had only met the orthodontist once, half a year prior. I canceled the appointment and decided against the braces, but the wrap-up process was extremely frustrating. It was hard to reach an actual person in the office, and I had to keep leaving voice messages or sending texts. Then they would get back to me at their convenience. Even though I had to pay for the custom mouthpiece that had been made, it was still a relief to end the relationship and not have to deal with the communication issues for the long period of time that braces would have taken.
