This is a Muslim based braid shop, managed by men who percieve themselves as champions of women. I felt attacked, oppressed, both verbally and emotionally. I arrived at 5:45pm. I sat there until 6:45pm. The entire hour I was in the chair waiting on the hair technician, the owner Quasim was yelling and screaming blabbering about something as he was doing hair- like he was preaching a sermon, LOUDLY! The energy was very tense and uncomfortable. My son and I were harassed by several of his "cleaning staff". They looked like some people from off the street. They constantly touched me and my son without my permission. Very unclean. When the braid technician finally arrived, the owner walked out after whispering something to a man sitting by the tv. The braider was very irritated and was extremely demanding pointing at me and telling me to hurry so she can stretch my hair before braiding. I sat in her chair and tried to explain how I wanted my hair done. She said she don't speak English She was laughing and as she was parting my hair she was speaking in French to the other lady. Made me feel uncomfortable. So I asked the other braider, "can you explain to her how I want my hair?" Quasim returned into the shop and asked the man sitting by the tv a question. Then he immediately came over to me and began yelling at me- the customer, saying I was treating his people like slaves. I was so confused. I had no idea what he was talking about. I asked the technician to stop touching my hair. I gathered my personal belongings and I left. I stated that I felt mistreated and disrespected by the owner and the braider and the man who was watching the tv. To say the least, I will not be returning to this shop to support this business ever again. I would like an apology both written and verbal. The first photo is how I wanted my hair styled. I initially went on the recommendation of a coworker. I had left once before when I was unhappy and then again when I moved further away but came back when I was dissatisfied with the cuts I was getting at a salon closer to home. So, I decided to go back to Pilar and Hair Envy. The first cut back was great. I was happy and made a follow-up appointment on the spot. Never again! I walked away with two different haircuts. Of course, you don't notice this until you get home and wash all the product out and try to style it yourself. That's when I noticed one side was shaped and layered and the other side was just a shorter version of what it had been. Just flat and flipped under. God knows what was going on in back! I don't have thin or difficult to handle hair. I came with a blank slate and walked away with a lopsided 'do. I was justifiable upset and I had to wait for her to get back from vacation to go back and have her fix it and even it out. So, I called when she returned and they said to come in anytime and she'd do that. This wasn't the first time I had to do that! That's why I left the first time. I drove all the way to Lutherville from work downtown one night for her to work on my hair again. Well, she cut it shorter and now the side that was flat is layered and shaped and she cut all the layers out of the other side and it's now flatter and longer than the other! I examined it with a skeptical eye when she put product in and ran her fingers through it saying, 'See!? See!?" I didn't see the full effect until I got home and washed it. To say I was pissed off is an understatement. I paid $55 to have my beautiful full head of hair hacked away. Never again! I think she overbooks, hurries and is distracted by people who talk to her. Every time I look in the mirror I alternate between wanting to cry and scream. I can't wait for my hair to grow out. Proceed with caution! **UPDATE: After much thought I called and asked for a full refund including the tip. I didn't feel I should shell out more money to have someone else correct her mistake. She's a co-owner and has been in the business since at least 1997 (when she cut my nearly waist length hair to my shoulders). There's no excuse for this kind of performance. I was ready to go in and ask in person but the receptionist cheerfully took my name and address and offered to send me a check for the full amount with no argument at all. This made me think that 1) this has happened before and 2) they didn't want me going in and raising a stink and having other patrons seeing what a mess my hair was. This review is in reference to her shockingly poor customer service, not the salon itself or any of the other stylists. Due to COVID-19, appointments could no longer be scheduled using the app, clients were required to e-mail stylists in order to schedule, completely understandable. On August 12, 2020, I had an appointment scheduled for 11:00 am, upon arrival at the salon, there was a notice posted on the door that Shy had a personal emergency and would have to reschedule. I live about 30 minutes away from the salon, and although disappointed that I wouldn't be getting my hair styled that day as expected, I was more concerned that my stylist was ok and in good health. I emailed Shy before driving back home, I said I hoped that everything was ok and to please let me know when I could reschedule. A few days pass, it's now Saturday, August 15, and I haven't received an e-mail response, so I decided to call her other location, Fells Point, because I'm not sure if Shy was still experiencing an emergency and I didn't want to be a bother. I was able to get an appointment with another stylist at the Fells Point location the very next day, perfect! It's Sunday, my service appointment went well, to my surprise Shy called the stylist who serviced me and told her to give me a 40% discount, it wasn't unexpected, but I appreciated her doing that. Later Sunday evening, Shy emailed me and apologized for the cancellation, again appreciated the personalized customer service. We emailed back and forth about my current style and discussed ideas about what I wanted to do next. During the conversation, Shy informed me that she'll be back to work fully starting the first week of September and that online booking would be back up as well. Fast forward to August 21, I happened to be browsing the app and noticed that a few September dates had opened up - one of those dates being the 9th, so I thought maybe she opened her book early, but I wasn't sure so I decided to email her for clarity - I desperately needed an appointment for September 4th as I have an event to attend on the 5th, so I emailed her to see if she had any availability on that day, as since the beginning of the pandemic, this has been our primary source of communication. Her auto-reply says to give her 24 hours for a response, again me not wanting to be a bother, I wanted to give her ample time to respond. On the morning of August 25, I decided to call the Federal Hill location, because I really need to secure an appointment for my upcoming event. A woman answers the phone and I'm greeted with "Shy Watters Hair Studio," I asked "hey, is this Shy," she responds "yes, may I ask who's calling" and in a jokingly manner, I responded "hey, this is Nickole don't mean to stalk you," and then the line immediately disconnects. I'm thinking it must be a mistake, Shy wouldn't hang up on me, what would be the reason? I'm just calling to get clarity on her availability. I called back 45 minutes later just to be sure, and received no answer. And to date, she has not replied to my email from August 21. I'm writing this review as a buyer beware, yes, the salon is great, Shy does do great work, that is not up for debate. However, the way that she handled the situation was poorly done and in bad taste. I have never experienced such terrible customer service. Unfortunately, I will no longer be able to support her salon or brand. Hanging up on customers (unwarranted, might I add) is unacceptable and unprofessional. Treat your clients with more respect.

Once I got into the shop, Carmen greeted me as if she and I had been friends for years - what a warm welcome! And not only that but once I sat down, she asked me to tell her about my hair and what I wanted to do - as a Deva Curl consultant I really rely on their expertise and experience with curly hair but it is always great when they really listen to your concerns and wishes so thank you Carmen!!! As always, the entire process takes about 2 hours since my hair is pretty long but let me tell you you will get THE BEST head massage when she washes your hair - I did not want to get up from the chair that is for sure - and she provides you with feet pillows so you can stretch out a little more - loved that! Before I left the salon, I really felt as though I was part of a new family - the other patrons were hospitable and courteous and FUN and I think that is just a sign of a really great shop!!!
