We went to Opal last night and split the Brussels sprouts, dates, and arancini and wow! There were four dates wrapped with bacon and filled with chorizo - rich and delicious. I always hear great things about this place, so I decided to check it out! I guess my expectations were a little too high. I emailed the owner about reservations & he confirmed them. I showed up & the bartender had no idea about my reservation. It turned out okay because there was an empty table for us, but it was still kind of annoying. I was expecting a more elegant type of atmosphere, but it was very much a dive bar type of atmosphere. Again, not a big deal, just was a surprise! Being a vegetarian is always a risk coming to a tapas place, but it seemed like there would be enough, luckily I'm not picky! The menu was mislabeled on several of the dietary restriction, so just beware! My partner (not a vegetarian) got wings and enjoyed them. We also got the corn fritters, which I did NOT care for at all (interesting bc I like most food!). The dip trio was very good, but VERY small portions. My minestrone soup was good, but nothing special. The flatbread was good. I liked the cheese on it! The cheesecake was good. I liked the jam around it. Wow! Hidden gem! Great cocktails. Small plates with local ingredients and seasonal produce. So tasty!

My husband and I went to Opal on Pearl tonight for dinner. The food was so delicious! Black Manhattans and calamari were our first course. Yum! The calamari was slightly floured and cooked so it was slightly crisp but not overdone. Pickled peppers distributed throughout gave a nice crunch and zing to the appetizer! For my entree, I ordered the scallops with risotto. Scallops are easy to overcook (I've been there) and these were perfectly cooked--brown on the outside and just cooked through on the inside. The risotto was also perfectly done with mushrooms to give it a nice flavor and texture. To top off the dinner, my husband and I split a piece of the chocolate layered cake. The frosting was chocolaty and creamy and the cake was moist. Our server was friendly but not intrusive. I cannot say enough about this restaurant! read more

It's a little drive for me, but worth the time. I met a dear friend there and to my surprise...I had already experienced this place back when it was called "Drink"! Now THAT was a nice surprise. So the ownership has changed and of course, everything else but no worries. I enjoyed the ambiance, decor and food even more. We always split a couple items so we ordered the Calamari and I am a tough judge on Calamari. If it is too greasy, too crunchy, too saucy, too firm or too unappealing to touch... I will tell you! Their Calamari was cooked to perfection! A dusting of crunch and tender rings inside, perched atop a light and delicate sauce served with pickled onions and cucs...need I say more. I love pickled anything but these were ideal. We also shared the Arancini Balls and not only were they humongous, but the cheesy goodness inside was just enough and the marinara was nicely seasoned and they were served Hot! This is an underrated restaurant. We've been here numerous times and find it to be superb. This restaurant, in the old Brooklyn neighborhood of Cleveland does not get the attention it deserves. We've been here on multiple occasions, and the food is always been outstanding. And so reasonably priced!. They have a wonderful cocktail menu. We got the black Manhattans and they were delicious . We had calamari, which was maybe the best calamari we've ever had. Lightly breaded with pickled vegetables --just so good. I had the salmon and my wife had the scallops. We traded our entrées back-and-forth and agreed that they were absolutely delicious. We left nothing on our plates. For a dessert we had a chocolate cake made by one of the owners. Moist. Delicious. Just outstanding. I run out of of superlatives when I talk about this place. Seriously , you have to come here. It's worth your time and effort. And so reasonably priced both of our entrées were well under $30. read more

The wine bar. It's a great place to go for a cozy girls night out, date night or just a casual night. When you enter it's very intimate, the lights are dimmed and there are couches around in sectioned off rooms or there are seats around the big bar in the center of the room. They have a wide selection of snacks and wines and a small beer and hard liquior option for those who aren't a huge fan of wine. All of their food is bought fresh from the farmers market which is amazing! I really enjoy their moscato which is a brand I'm very familiar with. Food wise, I really enjoyed their bruschetta, the flatbred, the meatballs, their spinach and artichoke dip and the seafood bowl with abit of broth. Everything is super delicious and shareable as well. I wish I could try the cheese/fruit board but I'm lactose :( The bartenders are both very helpful in making great recommendations based on what mood you're in and how hungry you're feeling. It's awesome! I really look forward to coming back with more friends or just on my own! They do book for private parties as well! read more

I was torn on what rating to give this place. While I didn't think the food was crazy good, everything else was crazy good. In the end I decided that, since I went during happy hour, I shouldn't consider it a total representation of what they can do. So, four stars it is! Keeping in mind they have a have a chance to easily be a five or a three, depending on a dinner experience. Service was great. They were very very friendly and attentive. The atmosphere was welcoming, clean, and new (because I was out on the front outdoor seating area, which is new). I have nothing to complain about the drinks for happy hour! They were very generous with us. HH fries are beautifully seasoned with some herb-y combination. My sister, the brussels sprouts eater, enjoyed them. The only thing I was less than enthused about was the flatbread. Which was just very... Underwhelming considering flatbread I can get for $5 at other places. It was small and pretty bland with just cheese. Hm. Great location with parking in the back!! I think it's worth a try if you're considering it. read more

I wanted to check this place out because the charcuterie looked wonderful but I was kind of disappointed. It was $27 and most of the crackers/almonds were completely stale and chewy. Since there was no bread or pita or anything it really made the meats/cheeses much worse when eaten together. You also didn't get very much of the meats(between 2-5 pieces of 3 different meats that were thin/small deli cuts). Also tried the Calamari and that was great. read more

This is a great place for a date or to chill with your friends. Staff is friendly and helpful. Wine is tasty with healthy pours. They've got some dim lighting so you look better to your date especially after a drink or two... Happy hour is from 5p-7p and you can find $5-6 drinks and $3.5-6 dishes. I've only had wine $10 and the charcuterie board $22, but I'd like to try out some of their other food options. Convenient parking lot in the back. Only minor complaint is that it smells like fried grease inside, but your nose gets used to it and the smell fades. read more

This gathering place excels at being a beautiful space, with perfect service and elevated bar plates. You can sit at the comfortable, large multi-sided (but inviting) bar, classy cool nooks for lounging, or at some high tops tables. Good open room flow. Kitchen is really putting out quality small plates. Baked goat cheese, sauteed olives, kale salad, calamari, beautiful cheese and/or charcuterie boards were all tried, devoured and enjoyed. Many other offerings still to try next time. Cocktails perfect and a look at the wine list presented some great and interesting offerings by the glass or bottle. Locally sourced cheese from another great place down the street... Old Brooklyn Cheese Co. is an additional local taste treat. The added bonus of the well lit and ample off-street parking, right behind the rear door, seals the experience. If this place is an additional indication of the trend of new spaces in Old Brooklyn, there are some great things to come. read more

Nicely decorated and locally owned. Tony has a lot of experience in the business and is one of my favorite bartenders. The focus here is on great cocktails, a nice wine list, and lots of small plates for sharing with friends. He also has an assortment of salads and so you could just stay here for the night and make a meal out of it--which is what we did. What would I recommend? The specials were Asian spicy wings, and a caprese salad made with Burrata cheese--both were excellent. His house fries were wonderful too. We did the curbside, amazing service and fresh hot food. Everything was quality . Mushroom Bisque was full of earthy mushroom flavor without relying on heavy doses of heavy cream. Sirloin was cooked great and paired great with the basalmic glaze. Star of the show was the roasted butternut squash ravioli , amazing creamy filling seasoned with nutmeg and browned to perfection in butter and fresh sage. Brownie was nothing like I've had before. Texture was fluffy yet rich and flavor of the raspberry and chipotle were well balanced. Perfect ending to a perfect meal. Will return for sure. read more

Opal is located in my home sweet home of Old Brooklyn, so it automatically scores right there. In the former Drink space, I recently went to happy hour. What a great menu! They have quite a selection, from little bites and salads to more substantial dishes, all at a great deal. But listen, the fries...you gotta try them. Coated in herbs and maybe breadcrumbs, I wasn't quite sure, they stayed crispy and delicious even cold! I wasn't even that hungry and we devoured them. For drinks I had a glass of Brut for $6 and a very refreshing wine sparkler, Vino Verede, $5. Three drinks, three dishes between two people, less than $30 tab. Very polite attentive and friendly service. I'm beyond happy to have this in my neighborhood. read more

We were visiting Cleveland and were looking for a place that had shareable tapas. We decided on Opal on Pearl in Brooklyn. This place is a gem. The location is a repurposed bank. But the ambiance is wonderful. Kudos to the interior designer - it has a casual and warm feeling. It has a beautiful center bar and tables for a sit down dinner. Spacing is great so you can have a proper conversation with your table mates. The cocktails were very reasonably priced and excellent. We ordered five plates for the four of us, which was plenty. The calamari was perfect-tender, well breaded with a pepper aftertaste. The mushroom tart, baked brie and the Asian wings were all top notch. The menu seems to change, but the chef is clearly skilled. We split a truly outstanding flourless chocolate cake with berry sauce. It was one of the best ever. We finished with homemade lemoncello, which was an interesting unfiltered version that had a wonderfully unique flavor. Service was friendly and timely. Then we got the bill. It was ridiculously reasonable for the quality of the meal. Literally if you bought this same meal in Vegas where I live it would have been three times as expense. Bravo, Opal on Pearl. read more

Great addition to the re-gentrifying Old Brooklyn Neighborhood! This place has it all. An extensive wine list, cocktail and craft beer menu. A selection of tapas that changes daily. I love that the food is designed around the cocktail and wine menu. The atmosphere is relaxed and warm. If I lived in Cleveland I can see this being my version of Cheers, where everybody knows your name. I'm looking forward to my next visit in the summer so I can checkout the new patio. read more

Classy and comfortable, Opal on Pearl is a great spot for Happy Hour with friends. We had the House Cabernet, $5, a great wine for the price. Service was friendly and capable. It wasn't very crowded, we were there early 5pm. Three of us shared pretty much the whole Happy Hour menu and it was all wonderful. Mussels were tender and tasty, meatballs were so good!, cheese board was just right for a taste of each item. Roasted cauliflower and Brussels sprouts satisfied our veggie needs nicely. I hate to be the one to break up the perfect 5 star reviews...but here I am. I have been here previously when it was known as DRINK. I loved DRINK so when this place became Opal although sad to see DRINK go it looked like it was changed to a place I would also be found of. I read the reviews looked online and even recommended to others to come try Opal. I came in had a glass of moscato and some small plates. It is still very much like DRINK scenery wise other then where there was intimate booth seating is now table and chair seating. Presumably to be able to fit more people in. I don't really feel like this area fits in with the rest of the places vibe. I sat at the bar. The bar tender was nice, patient, not pushy when trying to figure out what to get. I got a glass of masscato that was good. Ordered the stuffed dates with chorizo and wrapped in bacon with a honey drizzle on it. These were to die for. Tried a bite of the risotto rice ball wish I had the whole dang ball to myself. Tried the meatballs and was not impressed and honestly they were pretty cold the sauce was warm so I covered them with sauce to warm them up but still not in love with the meatball. Tried the artichoke crab dip that comes with crackers. The crackers are a dud luckily had some crostini bread from the meatballs that really was a better choice to spread the dip on. I wasnt wowed by the dip or the meatballs. If they could be brought up to the level of the dates and risotto balls then this place would definitely be 5/5. This is a small plates establishment so with that normally comes a little bit of a higher price tag. For the dates and rice ball totally worth it but for the meatballs and dip not so much. They did have some entrie specials that sounded really good and I would be interested in trying. I will be returning and you should really check this place out. This restaurant was AWESOME! Super trendy vibes from the second you walk in the door and the staff was incredibly friendly and attentive throughout our meal. The menu is a diverse set of small plates that are easy to share and they are all all SO delicious - we split the Big Board, Korean BBQ wings, and chicken and waffles with a sriracha maple syrup between three of us. My table ordered the the spicy bbq wings and the buffalo chicken dip with nan for sharable's. Our entrees were the sirloin steak plate (2), shrimp pasta and stuffed banana peppers to go along with two orders of opal fries. The sharable's and the opal fries were great! Absolutely no complaints! However, when it comes to the entrees, the steak dishes were average at best. The steak was over cooked (the waitress didn't ask for a temp) and the risotto was extremely crunchy and grossly over cooked. Also, the portions in comparison to the price were very small. The feedback in regards to the shrimp pasta and Banana peppers was positive. However, as I stated the portions were very small when considering the price. The service was friendly but very slow. We were told our food was being plated three times within a 30 minute span. We waited about 40 minutes on what looked like a slow night. The restaurant overall had a good vibe and may serve as a good place to grab a drink rather there then fine dine. I don't mind paying top dollar for anything. But when price and quality don't match up, count me out! I don't think I'll return. However, this isn't a terrible restaurant just not the quality I was looking for. read more

We came here with another couple on a Saturday evening place has a cool vibe Art Deco type feel. We were initially worried as it was not very busy. We ordered a bottle of Tuscan wine very good and decided to share plates for the night. Started with the calamari and dates both excellent and then the crab cakes. Finished with the flatbread of the day the only item I would rate as good and not excellent. Service was awesome from the two owners Tony and Ray great dudes. They had both worked at the flying fig. This place is outstanding! I live down the street and my only regret is I didn't try it sooner. We went on 2/8/19 for happy hour. We were greeted by Dina with a warm welcome upon arrival. The decor is beautiful and lighting is very dim so bring your glasses. We sat at the bar and ordered several small plates. We tried the Flat Bread Bianco, Korean wings, Beef & Ricotta meatballs and Opal fries. Everything was good with the star of the show being the flat bread for me. It was so simple and delicious. For dessert we had a piece of the Hummingbird cake, OMG! The cake is made in-house, it was to die for! I am seriously wishing I had piece right now LOL. We went to check out this new spot with good friends of ours last night- WOW! Tony the owner has done a fabulous job with both the decor and the delicious menu! (And he makes one hell of a Cosmo!) We ordered nearly one (sometimes two!) of the items on the menu. All are small plates, but the portions were quite generous. The Korean wings were a favorite, as well as the rosemary french fries. It was fun sitting at the bar and passing the plates between the four of us. Tony did his own interior decorating, and it's beautiful! Classy, cool vibe with lots of seating. Also, a major plus is ample parking behind the building. We will definitely be back to try the remaining menu items, and to devour more of those zesty Korean wings.
