This year, my BF suggested Sam Wok, a regular go-to for her, as she has fallen in love with their Wor Won Ton Soup. We made a reservation, which proved unnecessary, but is never a bad idea. Sam Wok is located in and older motel/motor court located on Calgary Trail S at 67 ave, and is as unassuming a restaurant as you could ask for. I love places like this for their lack of pretension and for their potential to be a hidden gem. I like family run restaurants and cafes that exude character that has not been purchased from a restaurant supply warehouse. The restaurant itself is far from fancy, and any semblance of "decor" seems rather haphazard. It is small, but cozy, rough around the edges, but clean. There are booths along one wall, and several tables with comfortable chairs around the main area. The booths are comfortable and roomy, which is increasingly rare in a world where so many cafes seem to take their seating strategy from budget airlines. The menu is vast and the choices appealing, but we went with the Wor Won Ton soup and the House Special Chow Mein, to share. Tea had landed within moments of sitting down, and our food arrived in very good time. We had considered ordering a third dish, but ended up glad we did not, as both of these portions were large, and by the time we were done, had left us comfortably full and happy. The soup was loaded with goodness, the Won Tons large and home made. There were also plump, juicy shrimp and delicious BBQ pork along with everything else you would expect. All the ingredients were fresh and delicious. The Chow Mein was also excellent, incorporating many of the same ingredients, on a bed of perfectly cooked noodles and ample delicious sauce. We were there for the long haul, as we wanted to catch up and chat, and we went through 3 pots of tea in the 2 hours we spent. We never felt rushed, and we were not the only table doing this. We were, however the only table of diners not of Asian extraction. This is always a good sign to me. If you want great Chinese food (or any other) go where folks of that culture go. When we finally settled up, our total bill was $27, less tip. Great food, Great value, nice people cooking and serving. These folks are proud of their food, and with good reason. If you are a fan of great Chinese food, and not afraid of a low rent location, you need to eat here. I will definitely be back.

We ordered salt and pepper crab. The server advise that the market price for crab was $48per/lbs. The server brought the 2.5lb crab live to show us. When the crab was brought out looked and said ain't NOWAY this crab is 2lbs. Maybe a little over 1lb. I asked to speak to the server or the manager in duty. I took the pic of coarse. Server said that the kitchen may have took the wrong crab . She would adjust the price afterward. When the bill arrived NO adjustment was made. When the bill arrived they never mention the adjustment, charged $97 for crab. We asked to speak to the manager, after more than 5mins and us paying the bill. The manager arrive, he was sorry that the bill wasn't adjusted. We accepted his apologies. I expressed my opinion of his establishment. Hours are pretty typical. 11:00am to 9:00pm everyday except closed Tuesday's (obvi). The decor hasn't changed one bit but at least the booths are comfy and well spread out. We came on a Sunday evening and it was pretty empty. The menu is broken into appetizers, special cold dishes, hotpot rice and handmade dumplings, handmade steamed stuffed buns and handmade noodles. - Spicy tofu skin (S.6) ($2.99 small) - we tried one of the cold dishes, spicy tofu skin, which didn't taste like much but it did have an interesting texture to it. - Handmade green onion cake ($5.75) - this green onion cake was great; much more flatter, denser and crispier than you'd normally find around town. - House special soyabean pasta noodle (N.6) ($11.25) - we got it with spinach noodles. Sounded like it might be similar to the ones you get at Noodle Feast but it wasn't even close. The noodles lacked that chew and elasticity that you want from homemade noodles. - Wonton soup (N.7) ($10.25) - you get twelve shrimp and pork wontons. The broth was light but had a nice sweetness to it while the wontons hit the spot. - Spicy tom yum king seafood noodle soup (N.3) ($12.50) - the spicy tom yum soup fared better than the soyabean one but only by a slight margin. The rest of the table liked it but I thought the broth was lacking in spice and depth. We tried the wide noodles with this dish and the result was the same. No chew and spring to them. - Lamb & carrots (D.5) ($12.59) - we got them steamed, which is my preferred dumpling method. This was easily my favourite dish of the night. Get it. - Pork & cabbage (D.1) ($10.50) - it's an extra $1.50 to get your dumplings pan fried but obviously, you need to try one of each. Plump, juicy and the skin holds everything nicely together. - 2x Pan fried Chinese chive buns (B.4) ($7.95) - you get three per order so we doubled up. These I enjoyed as it reminded me of the ones I ate at the defunct Northern BBQ House. Chivey, juicy goodness. Watch out, they come out hooooot. - Spare ribs in black bean sauce on rice (R.2) ($11.50) - the spare ribs was pretty basic and didn't do much for me. The rice was plain and desperately needed the accompanying side of sauce to give it some flavour. I would pass on it.
