NY strip supplement - delicious! Perfectly rare and served with an incredible sauce.
Mike P.

Managed to book the last reservation slot for Claws of Mantis' pop-up at Onsen and I'm SO glad we did. Not sure if I should leave this review for the Day spa or the restaurant, but the meal alone was incredible and a delicious homage to Vietnamese home cooking. It's a tasting menu so you do just get whats on the menu but there are supplements which we (obviously) partook in. Highlights: Amberjack crudo with Asian pear: loved the savory sweet balance for this starter. Wasn't too hungry before this but this stimulated the appetite Purple daikon salad: perfectly pickled with the right amount of bitterness from the whipped tofu. An unexpected gem. Charred cabbage with pork jowl: favorite bite of the night!! Everything was perfectly balanced and hit all of the flavor and texture notes of a 3 star Michelin restaurant: smoky, sweet, crispy, unctuous, savory, all finished with a bite of pickled cabbage for sour. Could've eaten 14 of these easily. New York strip supplement: really really tasty steak served rare with with Crying Tiger sauce on top - always a treat Sablefish - they we're out of the pineapple which I think really would've made this, but it is an owed to the sweet-and-sour catfish soup which I loved as a kid Dessert was a mango pandan pudding with citrus on top which I felt was a perfect end to all of the somewhat heavy flavors consumed in our meal. Loved it! We came here because my girlfriend has been following the chef's Instagram for about 10 years and I'm happy to say that this was a super memorable experience. I loved every dish and all the sake pairings. Would definitely come back on his next rotation! --- Sweet: delicious pork jowl and steak! All dishes were hits Bitter: wish we could have tried the onsen!

Had an amazing experience here! Booked the 2 hour soak + dinner experience. The timing is super flexible so you can arrive anytime for the soak and also start dinner anytime. The inside of the spa is very relaxing, with a heated pool, steam room, sauna, and cold shower. It's all in one area so it makes for a very communal experience. The ambiance was very calm and quiet when I went even though there were a lot of people. The experience feels very luxurious, with robes, towels, and even toner provided in the women's locker room. It was my first time doing a sauna/cold plunge and it was a great experience! I also loved the dinner portion; the set menu was creative. We also ordered 3 items off the add on menu and it was a very filling meal. They added a candle to my dessert since it was birthday! I love how the concept is pop up chefs so you'll get a new menu if you come back. The staff were super friendly from the beginning until the end, and the service during dinner was extremely attentive. It exceeded my expectations by far and I will definitely recommend to friends!

Made reservations for a Saturday afternoon at 12pm with a friend. Arrived a little bit late but was still able to enjoy the spa just needed to end at my original reservation time of 2pm. Spa included use of towels, sandals and robes, toiletries (soap, shampoo, conditioner, mouthwash, lotion and toner). Steam room was nice, lots of hot steam with space for about 6 people to sit comfortably in a tiled steam. Sauna was electric, nice, hot and dry, felt a bit more spacious in this area. Probably enough for 8 to ten. Hot tub in the center of the onsen, was solid wish the water was a little hotter but really nice to soak in between a quick cold shower and the hot tub or sauna. Three showers are available which you need to wash before and after the use of the spa. Overall enjoyed the experience, there were probably 10 other guests enjoying the onsen so felt a bit crowded at times but otherwise a great relaxing experience.

Love these simple-yet elegant aesthetics...

It was definitely a beautiful vibe and I was so excited to check this place out for my birthday that I didn't notice. The pictures were angled and it was one giant jacuzzi like pool, that fit maybe 20 people in the bathhouse at the same time as my girlfriends and myself. There was also a steam room and a sauna, which both seemed very nice, hot and relaxing, but I didn't want to mess up my hair, so I didn't explore either of these two other rooms. lol It was very relaxing and quaint, but you literally have to whisper since you're sitting in different parts of the bathhouse with other people. Lol, We liked hanging out more in the restaurant portion where we could drink our sake and at least have our own conversations. The lady that served us gave us a recommendation of the glass of socket so we could get a little bit more than 4 cups a piece. We also got a beer that was a perfect pairing by her recommendation. Everything was incredibly relaxing and very clean and organized. I also loved how there were separate bathing areas with dividers and soap available to shower before/after you go into the bathhouse, but my main issue was I thought it was like the Palo Alto bath house with multiple pools. I didn't realize it was one giant Jacuzzi like pool for essentially 20 people in a two hour timeslot. Parking is nonexistent over here so I'm glad we took an Uber over from the hotel where we parked our car at. I will also say the only locker available to me was the one on the very far bottom which was rather hard and cumbersome for me to reach over and get since I just recently had surgery on my back. Since we were the last group within the timeslot. There were quite literally no other lockers available. I didn't want to bother anybody that worked there, so I didn't say anything, but it was rather cumbersome for me to get my things in/out of the locker. Nevertheless, it was very relaxing, and we had a great time, but I think I would just go back to the restaurant section and not the bathhouse portion.

we got a dinner reservation separate from the onsen experience, so we had to sit at the bar. the set menu was $60/pax and we added $10 for a duck dish. service was great! overall I felt the food wasn't really worth the price -- most of the dishes were pretty simple and bland, and we were still hungry afterwards. kudos to the creativity but I think some dishes were more for acquired tastes - seasonal pickles - roasted beets, sake kasu 'cheese', soy balsamic, thai basil - charred cabbage, chive & tofu dressing, ikura - hamachi, aguachile, rau ram, cilantro, wasabi - chicken broth, shiitakes, green onion - onsen egg, kitty rice, katsuobushi - duck tsukune with egg yolk jam (our $10 add-on) - pork belly with yuzu kosho aioli yaki - sea bass, thai curry yaki - king trumpet, smoked oyster tare yaki - black sesame ice cream, honey meringue, graham cracker the onsen was $50/pax, and I would say it's quite worth the 2 hours as you can rotate between the dry sauna, steam, cold plunge, and onsen. there's free hot tea and iced water, as well as showers and locker rooms.

Amazing experience with the bathhouse and dinner combination. Currently doing guest chefs. A 2 hour bathhouse experience prior to a set menu dinner. Loved having a nice meal after a long soak. Overall will definitely come back. kinilaw ajo blanco- so many different textures with the tuna, the soup, and chips. You would think it would not work but It all fits together so nicely salted egg focaccia- amazing soft bread. I am always a sucker for garlic confe. Had to make sure the bread soaked up all the oil on the plate summer risotto- Nice soft and creamy risotto. Nice and light and was great to have with the fish grilled branzino- perfectly cooked fish that was soft and tasted amazing with the sauce. Had a nice acidic touch but somethings that acid was a bit much peach mango compote and cheesecake mousse- A nice warm dessert and was nice to have all those different textures come together. Felt it was a bit heavy on the cinnamon but otherwise it was good

I came to check out the Onsen with my partner during the co-ed weekend hours. The restaurant has not reopened yet but we really enjoyed this spa which feels like an oasis in the city. The moment you step in, it feels super serene and you're given towels, a robe and slippers to change into. The locker rooms have the basic amenities and hair dryers to change for the main area which has shower stalls, a hot spring, steam room, sauna and a cold shower. The main area including the shower stalls are communal. While it is a smallish space, we enjoyed cycling through the rooms and there are a few lounging chairs to rest in. Overall the 2 hour time slot for the small space feels about the right amount of time to fully enjoy the facilities and there is water and hot tea to hydrate in the main area. I do wish they had an actually cold plunge pool rather than just a cold shower but it does feel very clean and renovated for now so that is a plus. Definitely make a reservation through Tock ideally a week in advance as time slots especially on weekends sell out quickly.

Makena L.

So relaxing and aesthetic! We made reservation for 4 at 10 am. It was we lovely inside and renovated nicely. There is one pool, one sauna, one steam, one cold plunge shower. Water and hot tea is offered inside. There are no talking rules lightly enforced; when I went, people were talking at a high-whisper to low-talk level. There are nice showers with body wash, shampoo, and conditioner. They also provide towels, robes, and slippers. There is body lotion and toner in the bathroom. There's also lockers for your things. Service there is very nice! There's also a bar at the front where you can sit and order drinks or light snacks after your soak. For only $50 for 2 hours, I would go again.

Who would've thought a carefully curated Japanese bathhouse would be tucked away in the heart of the Tenderloin! Every corner of this onsen feels like it was purposefully chosen, from the black-and-white tile in the steam room to the MUJI-esque tin jugs of cool ice water. It's a really beautiful and extremely clean spa. Whoever designed the space did so thoughtfully and without cutting any corners. Admittedly, the biggest downside of this onsen is that it does feel a bit small. There is only one main room, with a hot tub in the center and a steam room and sauna on either ends. There are also only three showers and three lounge chairs, so sometimes there's a bit of a waiting game. But at a spa, time should never feel rushed! Highlights included the traditional robe they give you to change into as well as the unlimited refills of warm mint tea. Little details like this go a long way in sending the message that the spa is well-maintained and thoughtfully designed. Hoping to come again and combine the experience with the restaurant. For those coming on a co-ed day (like I did), make sure to bring a bathing suit. Robe, towels, and sandals are provided. Lotion, mouthwash, and a hair dryer are provided in the men's locker room, but you'll need to bring your own deodorant/hair products/toothbrush and toothpaste.

Amazing place! Will def be back. Loved the spa + dinner experience! Service was amazing, both spa and dinner, upon entering and through the dinner service. On this visit they had Aku BBQ for their dinner popup, who are always great -- had them before. My fave dish was the salmon!

Nobody asked for a Kabuki vs OnsenSF comparison, but here…read moreyou go. 1. $$$ Price Kabuki is $49/pp 2.5 hrs OnsenSF in the tenderloin is $50/pp 2 hours 2. Environment & Ambience: Kabuki has a much wider space, calming music, great ambience, wonderful smells and decor. OnsenSF is a dining space when you enter and spa in the back. Everything looks modern and nice, relaxing environment despite being located in the tenderloin. 3. Hot Tub: Kabuki has a rectangle shaped hot tub as opposed to OnsenSF's square shaped tub. 4. Cold plunge: Kabuki has a cold plunge that's perfect for people who don't need it to be extremely freezing. OnsenSF has a cold shower with many heads in place of a cold plunge. Both are enjoyable experiences 5. Steam Room: Kabuki's steam room is also rectangular as opposed to OnsenSF's square room. Kabuki's steam room also has a shower to rinse off excess salt and sweat before entering the common area. 6. Showers: At Kabuki, there's also a line of stools for the seated handheld showers where you can fill a tub of water and pour it over yourself in addition to the traditional shower stalls, where OnsenSF only has the traditional showers if I recall correctly. 7. Sauna: The sauna was great because you could adjust the heat by moving up the wooden bleachers. There was also plenty of space to stretch out and lie down. There were wooden half-cylinder blocks to place under the neck and back to promote blood flow. My partner's favorite standout was the salt scrub they have that's free to take at the refreshments table. You use it to scrub away dead skin in the shower and steam room. My favorite was the bowl of towels buried in ice cubes that helped me keep a cool head in the hot tub and sauna room. I will say that the thing that makes OnsenSF stand out is their dining pop-ups, but there's plenty of dining options on Fillmore and in Japantown. I would definitely go back to Kabuki again. The experience was incredibly relaxing. Highly recommend.

Possibly the best bathhouse in the Bay Area…read more Kabuki Springs is tucked away off a busy street in Japantown and feels like a portal to another dimension, one full of warm water, a quiet atmosphere, and plenty of lemon ginger tea. I was instantly drawn to how intentional everything feels here, from the dark wood of the sauna to the sleek tile in the showers. It feels carefully crafted to be both modern and timeless, with the Japanese motif flowing through all of the design. Personally, I love the dim lighting in the baths; with no windows, it feels like time is suspended. Is it midday, or midnight? Sunny, stormy? Early, late? You can't really tell when you're there, and that feels like the point. It's an escape in its truest, most relaxing sense. Attendants are constant in the baths, which makes it feel far more luxurious than what the price would suggest. Cucumber, lemon, or plain water are all on tap, as are iced hand towels, salt scrubs for the steam room, and hot lemon ginger tea. I loved how cups are encouraged to be reused (I hate seeing the giant pile of single-use cups in the trash at other spas). I'm holding out hope, however, that traditional green tea may make an appearance in the future! I'd recommend attending on one of the single-gender days, as I found that lent itself best to the fully immersive experience. Shower sandals are available, though I found them a bit uncomfortable. Next time I'll be sure to bring my own. As a bathhouse enthusiast, I cannot recommend this place enough. I can't wait to bring my friends here to learn for themselves just how relaxing and rejuvenating the sauna, steam, soak, and plunge rotation can be.

I felt that the masseur was trying to cover his course of massage, may be with just spending very little extra time on the tight side as needed. When trying to loosen a knot, he would still use his elbow to just push through the knot over and over. Knot is still there. Imagine how uncomfortable it was. He didn't work on the pressure point or may not even notice where the tight area was. My body was not relaxed after the massage.
