I used only the best builder for a new roof. I interviewed 12 roofing companies. I selected only the best builders because they seemed the most together. They were not the cheapest nor the most expensive. I signed the contract the end of June. During the interview ,dean the owner showed me some of his awards and certifications ...better business bureau good housekeeping etc. I was very hopeful things would go well.Due to the hot summer the project was delayed until August 3rd. Understandable. I attempted to do what I could to facilitate the process, pulling my own permit etc. I remained in contact with the business telling them I had the permit and explaining that I had addition leaks in the house. The project begins seemingly ok. The workers were there at 7am. By 8 am the foreman Dave presents himself and tells me there is a problem and that due to the how the previous roof was put on the entire roof needs to be redecked at a cost of 3500 dollars. This happens AFTER all of the shingles have been removed. fUrthermore if I don't agree to the redecking it will void the warranty. Reluctantly I agree. A change order form is presented for signature to document the change. Periodically Dave presents himself to ask questions or bring me up to date. Near the end of the day,Dave starts to hook up the attic fan included in the pricing. He works for about 30 mins. I show him where the circuit box is and all the switches. He comes down and states he can't wire the fan he's not an electrician. I need to call an electrician. "He's hot and tired". I don't understand why he attempted the job when he couldn't do it. I tell him I want a change order form reflecting that he cannot Complete the job. He takes away my functioning fan. I wait 30 mins as the crew cleans up only to find out that he has left the job site . Yes Dave the foreman has left the job site before the job has been completed. When I call him he tells me that I will get the change order form either via e mail or mail. I wait almost 4 weeks and no form is received. I e mail dean on Angies list (in which he has a b rating) only to have him say I won't be getting one because it doesn't change the value of the project. I paid for a new roof with a functioning attic fan which I don't get. Furthermore he offers to complete paperwork for me to go back to the insurance company to see if they will reimburse me but I won't do it as I had a functioning fan. tOday his secretary calls to see if she can do anything. She comments that they worked with my insurance company to have the redecking reimbursed. Yes they did however that is part of the contract I signed Now if I owned a company and had a client who was so unhappy with the job and had a foreman who acted out as much as Dave did I would personally want to speak to the client. Now I am sure dean thinks that I am trying to get something for nothing. What I do want is the document reflecting that they could not complete the job as their proposal states and a heartfelt apology. Seems pretty simple. I don't expect to hear from dean. But I hope you will consider my first hand experience when you go to select roofing companies read more
