I can't give them more than two stars. I really have tried to be progressive and open minded about 'banking black'. But when you have issues with this bank, you're really stuck in a bind. Why? Because you are not going to get in touch with ANYONE after hours. So if you have an issue of fraud/theft like I did, you're waiting hours to contact someone. They use a 3rd party AUTOMATED voice line for lost/stolen ATM/debit cards. Meaning, you have no way of knowing if your request has been honored or not. And THEN, you'll have to call the next business day just to request a new card. So, I had to basically wait 10 or so days without access to my money other than transferring it to another institution. Then, to top it off, I receive the new card and the other 3rd party number they use for activation won't let me activate the damn card. It keeps saying my phone number isn't valid. See NORMALLY, you'd get kicked over to someone human to get the situation rectified. Or have the option of activating the card online. Nope! So here I am on a Saturday afternoon, 10+ days after having my card stolen, having to wait an additional two days to access my money directly from the bank because they have NO ONE available in an emergency situation. read more

If you use direct deposit for paychecks, One United is not a bad option as that will avoid monthly fees. Their iPhone app is slow to post purchases but overall is ok. Do NOT use them for depositing physical checks as it takes 5 business days for the funds to be available. I found this out the hard way. For the first time, I deposited a physical check on Thursday (12.14.17) around 4:30pm at a U.S. Bank ATM, one of their 'foreign' ATMS. I was surprised to see it wasn't available the next morning as my Wells Fargo account allows deposits made at one of their ATMs available the next day. I assumed it would hit on Saturday (12.16.17). By Monday (12.18.17) I was concerned and called customer service who informed me that the check was received on Friday and that it takes 2 business days for it to clear. She said the funds would be available on Tuesday (12.19.17). Frustrated, I accepted it. I checked on my phone app that Tuesday and the funds were still not available so again I called and asked to speak with a manager. The manager said that the check was received on Monday (12.18.17) and that it takes 5 business days for it to post which would be Tuesday (12.26.17) as Monday (12.25.17) was a federal holiday (Xmas). In closing, I deposited a check on the 14th and the funds were not available until the 26th. HORRIBLE. Had I known this from the get go, I would have deposited the check into my Wells Fargo account and the money would have been available the next day. I cannot imagine what it would be like for someone who gets paid with a physical check to bank with One United. I opened an online deposit account because I wanted to support the movement. However, a couple of months later I realized that I was not utilizing the account and that the $12 monthly maintenance fees were excessive. Most banks provide a way to have the monthly maintenance fees waived and in my case, you needed a direct-deposit and to use the bankcard at least 10 times within the same month at POS to get this hefty fee waived. As an out-of-state customer, I was not happy with how long the transfers took in order to fund the account without direct deposits. Nevertheless, on 11/30/17 I called to close my account but was told due to a small balance that I needed to put the request in writing. After submitting my written request I was charged another $12 monthly maintenance fee which would be the second fee in the same month. Not only was my account not closed immediately but it was now negative. I gave the bank a few days to correct the mistake, after all, it did receive a written request to close my account in which it provided me with a confirmation. Subsequently, on 12/08/17, I called and asked to speak with a manager to find out why it is now negative after requesting to close the account. The agent placed me on hold to contact management and came back to the phone with what the manager's comments were rather than the manager actually picking up the phone. I insisted on actually speaking to the manager since one was available. I spoke with a manager named Dominique, and he provided an interesting analysis of why customer service is managed in such an unprofessional manner. Bottom line, if a manager is available, provide the customer the opportunity to speak to one. What I will say to those who desire to bank and do all business black, is still do business black but unfortunately not bank black with this bank. I believe the problem lies with the fact that the bank markets its products nationwide, however, the bank is still operating at a local level. Most banks have a call center with professional representatives to deal with customer issues and this includes banks that deal only locally. Even if you can make an argument that this equates to a more personal banking experience what I experienced is not the one most customers want or think of. It is easy to get the customers but you must invest in maintaining the customers because most people are not going to bank black with higher than average fees and poor customer service, this will always =closed accounts. read more

I would love to give this bank negative 5 stars. I have tried several times to reach customer service about a issue I had and nobody seems to pick up the phone. I tried calling them 7 times the very first phone call I was the phone for over a hour and 10 minutes , second time I tried and was on the phone for 45 minutes, the third time tried to leave a voicemail but it's full then the phone started to ring. Then I wrote a email and it wouldn't allow me to fill in my information so I can have somebody to reach out to me, the forth time phone ring and hang up and so forth and so forth. This is THE Worst Bank ever. The service is awful and they are nothing but a bank scheme. Try to do it it for the "culture", and here goes the bs. I sent over my $50 to open the account, it took about a month or so just to receive the card. I tried to activate the card and the process was tedious for no reason so I called and after literally waiting for 15 minutes, I decided to hang up and the card just sat there and I didn't think anything of it. A few months go by, I try the process again and I find out my account is closed. I called into the call center and I believe, I spoke to the worse supervisor in the history of supervisor! I believe her name is Ciara or Tamara, well not that important I called into the customer service number today 04/08/20 to ask for a transaction that I've made probably 100 times in the last 3 years that I've been a customer so when the automated system said there would be an extensive hold I was pleasantly surprised and great full to hear the representative in less than 2 min and I thought awesome, well I was wrong I would have rather held the line for 20 min than to speak with Ciara was one of the worse representatives i have spoken with in a while my first year with One United it was an ongoing thing to get a representative who lack knowledge and sometimes just rude, but I must say until today that type of service was no longer existent. Ciara was determined to advise me that my daily limit had been reached and there was no way she could increase my daily limit temporarily because I didn't have $373.00 available because I had already spent $600 when I advise her that my balance was well over $900 she then told me to go to the ATM and withdraw it, now how could I withdraw money I'd it wasn't available. Well it was there but she refused to increase the daily limit. I ask her given that I am in Atlanta and we have a stay home order in effect do to Coronavirus she then went back to "I don't have the funds" for a bank that says they or about the community she would rather go than just increase the daily limit. I ask for a supervisor and that's when I was told she is the supervisor wow! At that point I decided to hang up and call back hopefully I would get someone knowledgeable, well I did Jhana sorry if I spelled her name wrong she was pleasant and eager to assistant but she was being told what to say by yours truly Ciara and the worse part about Jhana came across and she knew what I was being told was incorrect but didn't won't to upset her supervisor. I tried opening an account because I want to support the BankBlack movement. After I filled out the application on-line (and funded the account), I get a message from them saying they still need to verify my identity, even though they already had my social security and driver's license number. They ask for additional documents but it's never clear what they need to be satisfied, I've already uploaded pictures of my driver's license. my social security card and my cell phone bill, but I keep getting a message saying my application is still "under review". Mind you, they have already taken my money but not opened an account. And forget about ever talking to someone on the phone! So I'm in limbo - sent sensitive documents and cash but have no account. I have 3 other banking accounts in good standing and good credit. I've been able to open on-line accounts in under 5 minutes. I hate to say it, but this is beginning to look like a scam. Several days later and no one has reached out to me and I still have no account. They've had my money for several days and my driver's license and social security card. Despite this, they send me several messages a day pleasing with me to complete the application because I am only seconds away from getting the card! (An ATM Card with some cartoon character from Black Panther on it - as though I'm a small child.) Whenever I check on the progress of my card, I get a message that says: THANK YOU! You cannot find a worse bank. Customer service is always trash and I've yet to hear a representative that wanted to be at work. They legit act like they are trustees you called and they have to do their job. Office hours for over the phone support are ridiculous for an online bank. One time my husband was reordering his card because he lost his and they cut BOTH of our cards off and we didn't have access to our account via debit card for 2 weeks. I have no problem receiving my compensation from the government 2 days early but always have an issue receiving my direct deposit 2 days early. I even verified with my employer who said the direct deposit was sent to the bank on Monday and now it's Wednesday 2 days before payday and still no funds in my account. I'm used to Chase having multiple locations throughout the U.S. With OneUnited having limited locations, it should've been a red flag on our end. But nonetheless, we wanted to support. I finally found an ATM that accepted OneUnited customers deposits, not thinking they would hold my PAYROLL check for 9-30 days! This is absolutely unacceptable. You're not even competing with other banks. New customer or not weather you deposit money at the ATM or in a branch, money is made available next business day or up to 5 days on a personal check. Other than being black owned there are no perks and the customer service is terrible. Read the fine print! For basic checking you have to keep a blance of $500 or the bank will charge you a $10 maintenance fee. That fee absolutely doesn't make sense to me (greedy). I haven't had this account very long, perhaps a week. I made the minimum deposit just to see what sort of operation my people were running here. Needless to say, I don't think I will be banking here unfortunately. I always try to support black businesses, but professionalism is key. Both online and through the "app" the bank clearly has insufficient technology to engage in serious modern banking. A call to customer service, just to see if my debit card had been mailed (since there is no way to check online and they don't inform you otherwise), was a complete failure. Furthermore, while looking into the banking history of this institution it is clear they have a problem with community lending. This is the basic task of a bank...you take in deposits and then you lend to your depositors. I am going to attempt to use the bill pay and see if it actually works paying my Verizon Wireless bill. With Chase this happens almost instantly. One United says they'll pay it next week, possibly by the 17th which is terrible. We'll see! Hopefully at some point they'll bring in professional management who have long experience in serious retail banking and a board of directors made up of experienced banking regulators and high finance wizards. They don't have to be black, btw. I wanted to open an account with this bank as I intend to only do business with black owned companies. I have an HSA account from a previous employer that I was going to load but because it's a health account, I can't just put in the information on-line to set up. I needed an account # and routing # to have the money transferred to another account. I spoke with "Lovely" who totally didn't understand a word I was saying. So I asked to speak to a supervisor. She sighed loudly, placed me on hold and at the 10.20 mins I was placed back in queue. At the 25.15 min mark the call was disconnected. If they wouldn't take the time to speak with you to get your money, what do you think they would do after they have it in their hands. Black people we have got to do better than this. Must say the customer service at OneUnited WAS ALWAYS pleasant and helpful and quick! In the end I couldn't continue to bank with them though. They are quite limited in a few things and it just wasn't a good fit. For example, there was no way for me to deposit cash into the bank account, they always held my checks for days, they also charged me to send funds from their account to my own other accounts with another financial institute. Overall it was okay. I feel they will be better in the future. I do have to give props to Dannie Harden though she was EXTREMELY nice, professional and super helpful! I open my bank account five weeks ago I haven't received a debit card I was told it was sent out twice. I put the wrong address when I signed up for the account that's my bad and I accept responsibility for that but I called every week after the initial five-day period to figure out why I haven't received my card and it was only yesterday which is 5 weeks after the incident that I was told my address was incorrect. I was told it takes 7 to 10 business days to receive my are or I can pay 50 dollars to get it faster. Now I have no money for food or shopping no way to get my money. The absolute worst banking experience I've ever had. Customer service is horrendous, your money is pretty much held hostage, so many headaches to go thru to get access to your money when dealing with certain amounts. Listening to Killer Mike and Charlemagne the God on this "Bank Black" movement, and it's been a complete shit fest.. I've had a direct deposit account going to this bank for right at 2yrs yet still getting charged a monthly $12.99 maintenance fee.. ok cool, keep that, I'm supporting the movement, never complained or made a fuss about it. One of my issues is trying to transfer money from this One United account to my regular credit Union which is an outside banking account because of their limits. One United tells me my daily cash withdraw is $300 and point of sale is $600.. My credit Union daily cash is $1000 and the point of sale is whatever's in my account.. I've been trying to transfer $6500 from One United and I'm told it takes 3 business days, with an Express transfer on their website with a charge of $10.. I asked if I took a road trip and drove to their Los Angeles branch could I withdraw all of my funds at once and was told I could only take $2500 out and the rest would be sent via check or some other nonsense. So I ask, what's the point of keeping amounts over $300 for the ATM or $600 for the point of sale if you can't have access to your funds dealing with this bank. I'll tell you this to those reading this, never put all your funds in one banking institution if you have not done this yet. Don't let this bank convince you they're the only one available for you, and that you don't have other choices and options regardless of your banking history if you have anything against you. I never had to use this bank, gave it a try and it's an unusual banking system to say the least. Even with the daily limits, after having a direct deposit for right at 2 years, never having a negative banking transaction, never having an overdraft withdrawal, always keeping a few thousand and upwards to $5K to $6k in the account, none of the limits can be upgraded. Many of us have bills and things that need to be paid that require more than these little amounts they offer. Their system, customer service, is outdated, and a few of the customer service reps have this arrogance of their doing some a favor, when in reality it's the people putting their trust into this bank and trusting them with their money is the only reason their in business. They're telling me I'm on a 2nd second chance when I'm not on any other 2nd chance checking account with my other banks. Also, trying to get a hold of someone at hours is non-existent. They use a 3rd party system that's basically only a fraud system. This is a headache when you need assistance after hours WTH the 3rd party system has zero access and knowledge of your account details. You will have to wait till regular business hours instead of having some kinda access to your banking needs like regular banking institutions. They'll tell you that you have to send an email to CustomerSupport@OneUnited.com and literally wait days on a reply.. No direct access to anyone, they say they responded which your may get a limited response days later or up to a week later. This is an outdated process in 2019 for anything you need resolving quick.. There's no sense of urgency with this bank. Trying to get a manager or someone of the phone has been nothing but a nightmare. Whoever I spoke with kept telling me they were the senior person to speak with which I automatically knew was bullshit. Since when do you call any institution, especially a damn bank and get the most senior person in charge on the first answer.. I've noticed this happened a few times when calling and needing someone that can make real decisions or questions answered pertaining to your account. It's always interesting when you can this bank, your van never get past the first person you're speaking with, and if you go to their website there's no other numbers available to reach anyone. So you're stuck dealing with someone with an attitude and getting no where at all. I went on there corporate site and I suggest anyone else having issues to reach out to these people, maybe then hearing and seeing the issues others are dealing with, they'll make some changes... To be honest, this bank is just low quality. The welcome packet they send you when you open an account gives you no information about your actual account and you have to play "where's Waldo?" on their site to find any information. As for being an online bank, they do a terrible job at this and everything is super outdated and their app provides no information other than account balance, which doesn't even include pending transactions. When you make deposits, your money isn't available to you for 3-5 days, which is ridiculous. DO NOT trust them with direct deposits from your job. If you request a call back by leaving a voicemail, sending a message on FB or Twitter, you still do not get a returned call. What's most annoying is the way they post credits and debits in your bank account. They state it depends on the 'time' an item is presented, but the customer is unable to view the times online. This banking experience so far has been terrible. The fact that they have to hold every single mobile deposit, after it is accepted might I add, for "5 business days" is ridiculous. On top of that, I received an email stating this and the person said it would actually be 7 business days now. Come on man. You do the math: April 3 (day check was accepted) - April 10th (the day Glenn Davis (customer service)said the funds would be released). This is why I can't support these types of business. My daughter just turned one and I wanted to start a savings account for her so she will have a nice little cushion when she turns 21 or graduates college. I decided I would try to bank black to support but it turns out the feeling wasn't mutual. It was already a hard experience being that the bank is not local so you can't visit a branch, and calling is a no go because you will be on hold forever trying to get someone on the line. But I felt the struggle would be worth it to put the funds back into the community. I started this process on 6/15. I submitted all the documents they asked for and like another reviewer I read below, they came back 5 or 6 days later asking for these documents again. I just found out today that I was denied for the account??? I have excellent credit, been with the same bank for over 14 years, no bankruptcies and my account has never went into the negative. With this bank, you don't get any reason or rhyme, or even a personal email, just that you are denied. I had to go to the website myself to check the status and find out. Very impersonal and possibly if I could have spoken with a rep or someone emailed and explained why it most likely was something that could be worked out. Coming from doing all my spending with RushCard I am a HUGE fan of OneUnited. I can link to cashapp and one of the first things I did was deposit a check into my account through the app. Its a great way to support black owned businesses and if you dont have a bank account as I did'nt. This bank is terrible. They can't do anything right. Instead of sending us a new credit card when ours expired they close and reopen the account affecting credit history. They are unable to take payments or do too much of anything. My score dropped by 80 points because they closed my account and didn't even notify us. Customer service is terrible their products are shit. They can't even offer a real credit card we just keep the measly $500 prepaid around for credit history and they even screwed that up. This bank has a lot of potential but the systems are archaic. It's hard to get in touch with customer service. I was on hold for 30 mins then the phone disconnected. I have funds that I want to move into another account but the systems in place make it difficult. My suggestion ( I don't know how feasible) as a concerned supporter is that they look into finding ways to improve their online banking system and their approach to customer service. I and a lot of others would love to help fix these issues in anyway. I love that they have a vision and hope in due time their product exceeds expectations and is able to compete with other established banks. read more

Well I tried to use this black owned bank. I blocked my bank debit card to prevent transactions from going through temporarily. I've used this feature with previous banks and no problems at all. Even after blocking my card, I'd see transactions come through for my apple.com subscription and it was going through. At times causing an insufficient fund charge. The first time I called the customer service rep said it happened because the charges were pending right at the time I blocked the card. This time, I had my card blocked for 3-4 days prior and saw the same thing happen. This time I called initially the customer service rep said this should not be occurring if my debit card was blocked. Once she looked further into the issue, she came back and explained transactions will still go through on my blocked debit card IF it is a subscription based transaction. I've never had this happen at any other bank. So this bank will charge $37 for insufficient funds. I feel this is a tactic to make money. I'd hope this bank could be compared "apples to apples" with other banking establishments, but it's substandard. I will go right back to using the other peoples bank.
