This review is for the bar upstairs, which is open prior to the dinner at One Penny Red. My girlfriend and I were basically the first people there, arrived pretty much at 5pm when they openned. The Pink Gin Fizz was excellent, and the fruits inside were equally delicious. Coming from the States, you never get to eat Beef Tartare so we ordered that, and we almost ordered two more. Loved the beef tartare and I believe it will suite those who are afriad to eat it as well. All in all, great location next to the Summer Hill station and a lovely outdoor patio that overlooks a bit of the community. Excellent decor, service and food. No wifi FYI

What a little hidden gem in the heart of Summer Hill! Left it a little late to make a reservation (like the morning of) but to the staffs credit they suggested the upstairs dining. Slightly smaller menu but the quality of the food and the professionalism of the service was nothing short of splendid. Managed to sit out of the balcony with the view to the west as the sun set. Haven't felt this relaxed while dining in such a long time. Perfect ambience! I had the lamb shoulder and my wife had the spatchcock and both were delicious accompanied with the crispy potatoes. Definitely somewhere we will be going back!

From beginning to end this was an exceptional dining experience. For those who follow my reviews my dining always involves tracking down gluten free dining options for my coeliac partner and we have found the inner west to be very GF unfriendly. So imagine my delight when I rang One Penny Red to enquirer about GF options that did not revolve around a salad or a steak. Emily was who I first chatted to and she reassured me there we many GF options and changes could be made to most options. So a booking was made and we duly arrived to start the evening with a drink in Vernon's bar upstairs from the restaurant. It was a hot humid evening and just perfect for a Tom Collins and perfect it was. Manuel knows how to make an exceptional Tom Collins cocktail. At 6.30 we were escorted downstairs to our table, the restaurant has a cool casual vibe with happy relaxed diners and attentive staff who explained the multiple dining options available to my partner. Eventually we decided on a starter of falafel and beetroot purée, then onto the prawns and the salted cod fritters for me as the reviews were consistently positive about the small and delicious small plate, very salty, crisp and moorish. Then onto a shared large plate of lamb shoulder, pomegranate salad, on a bed of soft subtle chickpea purée. Now the side order of potato's were wicked and my husband was in crisp potato heaven. If you dine at One Penny Red you must order these spuds! Sensational and a generous serving. I treated myself to a calorie overload and finished up with a chocolate and cherry tart and what a way to finish. We discovered on chatting with the charming and friendly staff that the head chef is a coeliac which topped of a wonderful night of good food, good wine, good company and a delightful dining experience. We will most definitely become regulars over the next year.

Wonderful restaurant with plenty of great food, wine and atmosphere! We have started coming here a fair bit and love it always. So great to have something within stumbling distance of home. Beignets for dessert highly recommended. Big selection of gins. Really you cannot go wrong here.

The Larder is a beautifully arranged store full of gorgeously packaged products that will have you wondering whether you're buying something just for its pretty jar or for the actual product itself. It does make for handy gift shopping though (whose mum doesn't love a block of French chocolate or Blue Mountains handcrafted coffee?). They stock a really great range of Australian and international cheeses, Hunter Valley olive oil by the litre, and top brands like Christine Manfield, Byron Bay Chilli Co and Toby's Estate. If you're on your way to a dinner party or BBQ and need to take along a token offering, grab a loaf of Brasserie sourdough or a cheese platter. The specialty grocer store opened after the owners returned from France and realised how difficult it is to find all the quality local and imported products you wanr in the one place. The staff are helpful and knowledgeable and clearly love what they're doing. There's plenty of parking available, just look for the green and white striped storefront.

You can also buy quality olive oil in bulk - in their or your own containers - that is much closer to cheap bottled brands. Nice!

Booze brings us together. Wow. This place is very cool. The staff are rather boisterous which brings down to earth, what could easily be a very snobby little locale ( only because of the the high class booze and all those chesterfields and floor to ceiling bookshelves - sploosh) Not having a good sample to go by, this place seems a go to for girls nights, and the night I visited there was a medium sized group of ladies cutting loose and not caring who heard their hollerin. Wine is a gal's best friend and I watched as they palmed off a would be suitor with nothing more than a glance. Heros. Wine by the glass in big bowled wine glasses with a great selection, and Elvis who I presume is the owner, knows his tipples. My pick of the eve was the Alto Monte - $14 a glass but by George that wine is as delightful as a magical miniature new born fawn prancing across your tongue on a rainbow. Food is basically nibbles. Sharing platters: a cheese one, a meat and cheese one and a Vego one with Cashew cheese. Toasties including one with Brie, cranberry and Rabbit terrine. Delicious. Anyone can google the origin of the name of this place, and I think it does every justice to the moniker. I think this may become my regular hangout.

First, teasing me by putting the famous cocktail 'The Aviation', on the menu, and then the very next time and every time after that, never EVER having Maraschino liqueur in stock again, and then taking it off the menu? Well sorry, it just isn't good enough. Sure, I once requested Don the Beach Comber's Zombie cocktail, back when you used to be cool, and would take requests for things that werent written down... and seemingly you liked it, and put a ring on it ( or at least put it on the regular menu) I can totally see why, because you know, It's a really tasty and amazing drink, best served in a Tiki mug... wait a sec... Oh man, you've gone and changed the glassware. I just cant abide it, OK? I have to say, I think it's you, not me. And it was too soon in our romance for you to go and change everything like that. Old Grandad's gold rimmed whiskey tumblers are no place for an espresso martini, and frankly, i think you know it. What were you thinking? Your tables, my God, your tables. If you insist on having your waitresses constantly shuffle from the bar to the Kitchen to the back courtyard, at least give them some room! There is seriously nothing more irritating than having the back of your chair knocked by a butt or a knee by someone trying to take drinks to another table. And what is with the kid's bicycle theme? I give up. I wanted to love you Beejay's. I wanted you to be my place of respite from the madding crowd, Sadly, it's over. Im going to make cocktails at home from now on. I even made my own Violette Liqueur, because I was that desperate. ( Ps: You can get Maraschino from Dan Murphys.. just sayin)

But it did well, and the young owner was told that an evening wine bar would also do well, so now it does that as well. And it does both well. It's a small space, with a street-facing counter for a quick coffee, a few tables, and a semi-private booth in front; a long corridor past the kitchen and storerooms; and then a small funky courtyard in back. I've been for breakfast and found it fun and tasty. My salsa eggs, with spicy diced tomato-y bits and salty halloumi, were a fine breakfast. I've been for drinks and found it very relaxed, and with a big and interesting list of wines (by glass and bottle), beers (imported bottles), and cocktails (2 for 1 Hendricks gin sours? sure!). Shared with some warm spiced olives, and you've got yourself a very happy hour. We had one incident where coffees were forgotten during a breakfast order, but other than that service has been exemplary: very friendly, and not in a fake way. Super neighbourhood cafe/bar.

Both soooooo good! The volume was not so noisy so we could actually talk and hear each other. Then the first band came in and, I'm sorry to say I did not catch their name because they were incredible! Their vocalist has quite a versatile range and adorbs. The guitarists and drummer were da best!!! We sat there longer than planned because song after song was wonderful! And, make sure you check out the ceilings!! Purty interesting to say the least. (If you are more a prudish type, I suggest not looking up. No judgement!) But, eventually we did go to the jazz venue.... Jazz. Hot Jazz! Mellow, delicious and...what can I say?
