If you want a simple dark bar, they have that, and if you want something spicy or liquor-infused, they have that too. Mini-bars, gift, sets, drinking chocolate? Yes, yes, and yes. Next, Bar & Cocoa offers a welcoming environment. They do a lot of their business through online orders, but the storefront is hardly an afterthought. The manager is helpful and outgoing. Plus, there will usually be samples and free drinking chocolate on hand for the hungry and curious. Prices vary, but you get what you pay for. If a Hershey's bar is your norm, Bar & Cocoa's offerings will invite sticker shock, but if you've had better quality stuff, then spending $10 on a bar won't seem outrageous. Whether you are a chocoholic or know someone who is, Bar & Cocoa is well worth a visit.

The toppings were in two different areas. At the back of the room was a bar with six different cobblers. The peach cobbler and apple cobbler that I did try seemed fresh and flavorful. All items, including the cobblers, are charged at 0.75¢ per ounce, which does add up. I would maybe give it another shot, but overall wasn't impressed by the quality and price, as well as with the service (two employees on site who were in the back and only made an appearance when It was time to check out).

They had every topping imaginable. The cobbler bar had a ton of fruit choices too - apple, cherry, peach, etc. I loaded my froyo cup up about 1/4 of the way with sweet flavors and then topped it with cobbler and toppings. They charge .75 cents an ounce. Everything tasted good, but the cobbler wasn't anything special. The crust part was kind of bland. I had my froyo inside and the place kind of gave me a casual cafe vibe. They had health items available throughout the store too.

Once again, we had to play "find the cinnamon" while eating these. The term "cinnamon roll" is such a misnomer. There is little cinnamon to this roll. But, I do need to advise anyone who is unwaveringly accustomed to the Italian and Portuguese bakeries of New England (at least in the 1980s), and similar places, the pastries here aren't quite at that level. The pastries I tried were a little dense and shriveled, with a slight sour taste (which could've also been due to some uneven baking, erring on the overbaked side). In an apple filled item, the small amount of apples weren't quite soft and sweet enough, as well. Overall, the pastries were nearer to those of a very talented home baker than the polished work of a traditional professional pastry shop. Of course, for this specific region, this will be an enjoyable stop. With that in mind, I'm not surprised there are long lines; it must be very exciting to encounter a shop like this for the first time. There are very few other bakeries making pastries of this type, much less good ones. It's very, very hard to make excellent pastries. But, if you come from a land rich with bakeries, just set your expectations appropriately. Plus, there is the critical difference between New England and North Carolina bakeries: Would you rather have pastries that are sensational from sullen and unpredictably snappish people? ...or pastries that are decent and charming from laid-back and friendly people?
