I decided to look into other options and did a search for places I could pay out of pocket. When I lived in Mexico, I had been using the services at a local hospital, paying a monthly membership fee for their services so imagine my surprise when I found out that the exact same system existed here. That was when I found Dr. Marisse so I booked an appointment. I found her originally on Zocdoc and the nearest appointment was in a month and a half. Within a day of making the appointment, I was called by the office to Nurse Shawna who wanted to make sure that I knew that all appointments needed a preliminary chat with the Doc, after which I could book my appointment. thanked me for letting her know that the next available appointment was that far away. It turned out there was a mix-up and that she did have more immediate appointments available. There is plenty of parking, as it is in shared parking lot with other businesses. However, there are two buildings with the same building number but with different locale numbers. Upper Echelon is in the building nearest to the AAA and the Farmer Boys. At the appointment, everything was clearly explained and we went over a sort of plan of attack, with regards to my concerns and what I needed to do. I appreciated paying less per month for the membership, which includes as many appointments as you want. The lab work and the tests are at wholesale prices so even with the membership fee and registration, all of this was cheaper than the plan I was going to get with insurance. What I appreciated was the quickness of getting an appointment. I have always hated waiting a few weeks, as a new patient, before actually being seen but I was able to book this within a week of the appointment. It was a week because their availability interfered with my work hours. Otherwise, I would have been seen earlier. All in all, it is pretty convenient and a wallet-friendly option. After that first appointment and the lab results came in, Dr. Marisse wrote a VERY long email detailing every point of concern. Which I appreciated because I went for answers and I was getting them. If you need a straightforward person to tell you what you need to be doing and not someone who has to be on your ass every step of the way, this is the ideal option. I would say the ONLY con is that they do not have appointments during the weekends. And since I work during the week, I have to take time off to go to an appointment.

Accurate rating description for two starts is "could've been better." This place only has PA/NP…read moreand no MD on site. They have the capability to draw blood and send to lab for stat orders. Unfortunately, what they lack ends up a longer list. The first MA was unable to get a vial of blood and said someone else would try on my other arm with a straight needed (vs butterfly). She left me without even putting a bandaid on the arm she poked and I had to struggle to put the bandaid on one handed while still maintaining pressure on it. Next MA comes and draws blood and when she's done she yelps I don't have a cotton ball (to put on the vein she just drew out of) and my blood is just pooling while she puts a bandaid on. Luckily I'm well versed enough to know I needed to put pressure on my bandaid. The NP who saw me was new to (per the MA) she really didn't put my mind at ease. Her expertise and knowledge seemed lacking based on the answers to my questions. First thing she asked me was, why are you here and not the ER? I told her my PCP sent me here because she didn't feel it necessitated a ER visit. She wanted me to be evaluated by YOU to assess and in your medical opinion, do I need to be seen further or what course of action next? She swabbed me for flu and covid and I verbally questioned her because I had isolated severe GI symptoms. She said sometimes those present wither GI only. Does it? I don't know, I'm not an MD but I'm also someone who works in healthcare and it didn't feel like the proper procedure. When I asked if she would be ordering any stool samples, I heard through my closed door "do we do that?". Ok, she's new, I'll give her that...but she comes back in and says "if you'd like to have the order for stool testing I'm happy to give that to you." Am I the md or am I the patient? I came here for your professional medical opinion! Do I?! So after I kindly communicated that I am looking to her for her opinion as the expert whether or not my symptoms necessitate an order, she still doesn't quite give me a direct answer! I haven't been to that many urgent cares, but I've come to see a trend that many of the urgent cares that are owned by a company with multiple locations don't have MD's on staff physically there. That said, I've also noticed the trend that many provide sub-par care.

The office refused to treat me, for a raging bladder infection that they tested me for, even though I'm a regular annual patient. I refused to pay the $50 to come BACK to the office the same day, for the RX. 3. His physicians assistant incorrectly diagnosed me as having HPV. And I had to go to another doctor for an incredibly painful procedure, all for nothing. I did not have HPV. 4. In my opinion Kurtz now has a God complex, he didn't used to. ***5. THEY REFUSED TO TREAT ME, AFTER I LEFT MY URINE SAMPLE....UNLESS I PAID WHAT FEELS LIKE A $50 EXTORTION FEE, in order to give me my prescription. When the doctor says they don't hold back care because of an unpaid balance, that is entirely incorrect, and I believe he's lying. His behavior is reprehensible, and he is fully aware of this. Don't say you weren't warned. ....*add the fact that he stands by his uneducated and extremely unprofessional staff, says even more. Do better Dr Kurtz. We ended up going to Dr Annette Bernhut in Orange and she is AWESOME. She cares about you as a person, vs you being the enemy

I recently had a difficult time dealing with a head lice case I had gotten from work. I tried Nix multiple times and it did nothing. Once in A Licetime helped me with decreasing the amount of lice in my head, but did not completely rid my hair of them. They were friendly and helpful only as long as I was spending hundreds of dollars, the second there was an issue, they weren't so nice....I had a severe case and had 4 total appointments, here is the timeline of what happened. Appointment #1: Went in with severe case for the first time, was asked to sign a waiver and was rushed through signing it, and was assured it just said that if there were an issue with the lice not being cleared, they would take care of it (I later found this to be not true). Most of the lice were probably clear by that point but that night I found a baby lice that was left in my head. Now, I have VERY thick and long hair and they spent less than an hour combing my hair through, so I could see why one or two were missed. I didn't think much of it since I'd be going back in a few days. [Paid ~$280 for 2 treatments + 3rd check] Apt #2: 6 days later. Head was treated again and once again, I found a full grown lice on my head within 6 hours of leaving my appointment. I alerted them immediately and even sent a picture for proof and they were so friendly in assuring me they would take care of it no charge when I returned for my final check. Apt #3: 6 days later. I return for my final check, which is supposed to be complimentary, they of course find more lice in my head, which I had expected considering I found live lice right after my last appointment. The technicians tried to get me to pay an additional $70 for continuing to treat it and tried to claim I just got "re-infested". Which was impossible. I only still had live lice due to their lack of thoroughness the last 2 times. After a bit of trouble and my constant pushing that I was told I multiple times that I would be taken care of at no extra charge if their treatment didn't work, they treated my hair again for lice without charge. Withing 12 hours, I AGAIN found a live baby lice in my hair. Though this time I opted to buy the $35 Enzyme Lice Treatment they used in the salon and decided to treat myself at home. I begun to use the enzymes every other day for two weeks, each time leaving it on my hair for at least 12 hours. Call #1: I called after my final check to express my concerns about finding lice in my hair after the final appointment (and the previous 2). I was again assured of the "guarantee" and told to use the enzymes for 10 days, which I did. Apt #4: Unable to check my own hair to see if they enzyme solution worked, I opted to contact them again to ask for another head check. And considering their "guarantee", and the fact that after each of the 3 appointments, I had still found lice in my head due to their lack of thoroughness, I expected them to waive the head check fee. This is when the customer service when from friendly to outright rude and even mean. I was told that despite being told I would be taken care of at no charge over and over again if the treatment didn't work, and despite STILL HAVING LICE after each appointment that I promptly communicated to them, that the "guarantee" only lasts 10 days after the second appointment. (Be aware, after my final appointment, I was told to use enzymes for 10 days, assuring that I would run out of the guarantee time before going back). I ended up still paying the head check fee to have peace of mind that the enzyme solution did in fact work. Long story short, they do use a formula that I believe works to rid the lice (that you can buy on Amazon btw). But their combing technique is rushed and not thorough enough especially if you have really long or thick hair. They will have you sign something at the beginning, READ IT FULLY, don't let them rush you. Also, do not rely on their guarantee to treat you even if the treatment doesn't work. If they treatment does not work, they will just charge you more. Biggest issue of all was the turn in customer service at the end, with Olivia. I was perfectly pleasant the entire time and simply asked them to follow through with their guarantee, especially since after each of the 3 treatments failed. It left a bad taste in my mouth making me realize that I was lied to purposefully and made to be intimidated to get as much money out of me as possible. My advice: Buy the enzymes, use it at home for 10 days, and go elsewhere for a head check for lice. read more

I was very happy to find Once in a Licetime. My daughters were infested with lice and I needed help immediately! My 6 year old was severely infested, every square inch of hair had tons of nits. Raylene did a great job pulling out thousands of nits and did so very carefully & in a comforting manner; my daughter was smiling without pain the whole time. She even got free snacks & watched a movie during the treatment, making the whole experience very pleasing. The products they use are natural, very effective, & safe for the scalp, don't have a bad odor, or have fumes that make it difficult to breath like over the counter products that burn the scalp. Just AMAZING!!! My three kids, my husband and myself had lice . My poor husband would have been stuck doing a half-assed job combing my hair if it wasn't for the magnificent hands at this place! We didn't know my husband or sons had it until they were checked. We wouldn't have checked them at home, either only adding to our infestation! Stumbled upon this gorgeous little salon in Brea for the first time recently and went in to check it out. I walked into once in a lifetime this morning scared about possibly having lice from working in a theme park where it is going around. Just loved this place! Olivia is amazing! We had been treating the girls for weeks at home and just had enough! Olivia is very kind and knowledgable, she put me at ease right away and made this stressful situation and easy one. The salon is immaculate and has an ambient feel. We used Once in a Licetime in Corona Del Mar a couple years ago, we moved up to Anaheim Hills & now they are finally here in Brea, close to our house! My wife & I couldn't be happier!! Lice was such a huge problem for me to get out, but upon discovering this wonderful place, Olivia was so helpful in helping to get the lice out of my hair! I wouldn't be able to get this out on my own and she meticulously worked to get this out! She is very kind and helpful! Come here if you need to get your lice out and be stress free! read more

It was the first time I have had any experience with lice, and with 2 children, I knew it would be inevitable. We came to Once in a Licetime and Anela made our experience very pleasant. I saw my 4 year olds hair this morning and freaked out. I called Once in a Licetime and I was able to get my whole family checked ASAP. Which is exactly what I needed for my peace of mind. I called Vanessa immediately. She was so kind over the phone, immediately calming my nerves. She came the same day. Spent two hours on my daughter, and checked my husband and I as well. The whole time she walked us through the process so we could have more information. We have learned a lot about lice, more than we ever wanted, but happy we did. We still text her with questions, and she responds quickly with calming words of knowledge. We definitely recommend Vanessa and her lice-free service, but hope to not have to call her again. :)
