One late afternoon, as we drove along Apperson Drive in Salem, Virginia, in search of an antique or…read moregift shop, we ran into a very one of a kind and unique store named "Buy The Season: Home Decor for Every Season." Its large street sign attracted our attention, and even though it was late and almost closing time, my friend and I decided to stop and give it a look. It contained one of the largest selections of unique seasonal home decor and furniture of Roanoke Valley, with over 150 vendors. We parked and went inside, and I was impressed with how well everything was organized. The nice cool temperature of the place and the pleasant smell motivated one to walk around and explore all the items exhibited there. It was time to close, so I asked for a business card, and we decided to return next week and then have dinner in one of the many great restaurants in Salem. So, on the next week, we arrived early in the afternoon with enough time to explore the entire extremely large store space. There were some antiques in good or almost excellent condition, some Americana collections, some perfect antique, and Americana collections, some wonderful pieces of quality furniture including some Ethan Allen, some unique signs with sayings, jewelry, glassware, silverware, homemade greeting cards, books, and almost all you can think of. There is also a space with the Apperson Cafe with bread and some other bakery items made by the Amish. I was also able to talk with some of the vendors who were bringing new items to their space or cleaning the last items they brought and arranging them. They were wonderful individuals who really enjoyed finding the items and putting them for sale at very reasonable prices. The owner of the store also had items for sale there, and the salespeople treated us very kind as we asked them some questions. I would definitely recommend this store to those looking for gifts or items to decorate their own place.

What a GREAT place! Something for everyone! They even have buggy's to carry your treasures.read more

There are some places you can't conceive closing down. And "Now,Then And Again"…read moreis one of those places. Luckily the current owner, Wanda Henry, stepped in to save and preserve the retail space for local vendors, in 2013, when the Old Salem Mercantile, was slated to close. Now, this large artisan and vendor mall located next to the Pancake House in Salem, Virginia, hosts 80 individual venders and consignors, offering antiques, primitive decor, solid wood furniture, vintage collectibles, mid-century modern pieces, artworks, glassware, handmade jewelry, records, toys, and handmade items, among other interesting and amazing things. I had driven by it, in my pearl white Lexus, many times without even realizing it was there, due to its unasuming storefront with not too bright window displays. Its name, hard to decifer at first, "reflects the Shop's blend of goods from different eras -- spanning the present (now), the past (then), and items brought back to life or rediscovered (again)." When I first walked in the establishment, I was immediately impressed not only by the variety of the items, but also by their great condition and quality. Not only are the items very reasonably priced, but they "feature daily red-tag and yellow-tag discount sales with new inventory arriving constantly." They have a welcoming environment with knowledgeable and friendly staff who are always around and willing to help. One of them whom I asked a question about a painting I was interested in, stopped what he was doing, to calculate the discount I would get for it, and tell me until when I would be able to take advantage of this sale. Besides sales, they offer some other very unique services, such as professional local delivery and pickup, layaway plans, consignment opportunities for sellers, as well as periodic paint classes. While I was there, I was fortunate enough to meet Renee "Butch" Craft, a longtime manager of The Roanoker Restaurant, who took over ownership in 2004 and operated the landmark restaurant until it permanently closed in May 2022. Unfortunately, it closed down before I had an opportunity to visit and dine there, but I greatly enjoyed talking with her about the restaurant. Afterwards I found out about "81 Years of Food and Family," a commemorative cookbook and history book released in December 2022 following the unexpected closure of The Roanoker Restaurant. If you love the thrill of the hunt, I would highly recommend that you set aside a couple of hours to explore this place. It is a one-of-a-kind experience and who knows what treasures you will find to take home with you.

During this holiday season, I want to visit and review some gift shops. Blue Moon Vintage Mercantile is a "woman-owned bohemian gift shop and creative hub," located in the heart of downtown Salem, Virginia. When I arrived, Scott, the husband of the owner, Holly, was behind the counter, talking with what looked like some of their repeat customers, so I decided to walk around and take a look at this charming, little shop with very interesting one-of-a-kind items. I saw some handmade gifts such as arttisan jewelry, pottery, local artwork, vintage home decor, and a lady in the back arranging some colorful tie-dye dresses and t-shirts, among other items, all priced very reasonable. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review to get a better sense of the place and its amazing merchandise. Several customers came in to shop while I was there. When Scott had a free moment I was able to talk to him about the business. He told me how they first started as a vender in antique shops, and in June of 2020 they opened this brick-and-mortar boutique with vintage home decor, bohemian clothing, and handcrafted items from local artisans. In addition to the retail sales, the store offers "DIY Art courses, hosts weekend events, and organizes pop-up shops that celebrate creativity and community." They also have a very professional website: bluemoonvintagemercantile.com I highly recommend that you give them a visit for all your gift shopping needs and am sure you'll also find something for yourself or for your home.
