A few months ago we stopped by B&D to get a few comics for a road trip we were taking. Our nine year old had been watching Miles Morales over the summer, and I wanted to prompt him to read more and watch less. We walked in and were warmly welcomed by everyone there, including other customers. I even picked up a Green Arrow and G.I. Joe for myself. Now we are frequent visitors and greeted by name as we walk in and have pull lists of current series that we are reading. While my son is learning about different characters that he's interested in, I've delved into the realm of Key Comic Collecting. What I've found here is their absolute desire to help every one of their customers feel welcome, validated in their style of collecting and appreciated for the time spent within those four walls. Always My go to shop for current SPAWN Issues! They always treat me and my fiancé like family and have had my business steady for the last 7 years since I've been in the area. I honestly couldn't see me going anywhere else to get my weekly pickups. A great staff with a great selection of current comics and a pretty good selection of back issues as well. This spot has a ton of new issues of most of major titles, and the employees are very friendly. Oh, and of course, the building's log cabin design is very cute. However, I was just a little disappointed when I discovered that they don't really carry a lot of Silver Age comics. I got back into comic books after reading them as a kid. It's a great way to unplug and escape for an hour. B&D has very friendly staff and all the new comics, plus a lot of old ones too. After looking for some new comics and finding them unavailable, they offered to order them for me. I'm setup so they'll pull my comics for me and keep them until I can come in, charging me either then or on the 1st of the month. That's really helpful since I'm only in Roanoke once a month. I went here while in town for work. Decent sized shop but if you are looking for anything from the 80s or earlier this is not your place. That being said they have a great selection of modern age (2000-current) comics. They also have many TPBs & other comic related items. The staff was very friendly & helpful. read more

I was in Roanoke for business and decided to indulge another one of my vices: comic books. It's a nice, well-stocked store with a healthy amount of singles and back issues. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and they are more than willing to help you search through all of their back issues to find the one you want. When I'm in Roanoke again, I'm going back. read more

I used to frequent this establishment back in the eighties when it was in its Williamson Road location... lets just say that the similarities between it and the Androids Dungeon on the Simpsons are staggering. I was the victime of barbs and jabs from the then owners ( side note: i do not know if the ownership has changed). i paid inflated prices( 75 cents for a 60 cent comic) and had to deal with the overweight counterman who always asked how long I was going to be. I was a comic superfan and I put up with it because there was no other outlet for my obsession. it should also be noted that I risked my life to get there having to take a bus down Williamson road then walk past the Lee porno theatre to get there. I hope the new era of comic fandom has brought New attitudes from the merchants in this store. BE PREPARED TO BE TREATED RUDELY! OH and it smelled musty too. read more

An amazing comic book shop with a friendly owner and great staff. A great collection of trades and many boxes of back issues. A box can be reserved and all new comics you request will be ordered and put aside for you. I may be away at school but I always get all the books I want thanks to this great service. read more

I feel immensely lucky that a town as small as Roanoke has such an excellent comic store. Not just a store, but a hub of Roanoke's geek culture. Terry and the folks she hires are all friendly and helpful (NOT the stereotypical comic shop guy). If you've never tried comics, they're great at helping you find the right place to start. They also take tradebacks. The only negative is that they don't keep the small print titles in stock; you have to order them. read more

I LOVE this place. Love it. Not big into comic books, but I do read some. However, when I have the chance, I always go in with my husband. I love the staff. You couldn't ask for better. They know anything and everything you could need or want to know. Also, my kids come in, and they don't freak out at all that I brought my kids. Need something and it's not on site? I have gone to this place on and off for about 15 years. Overall, it is a nice shop, but there are some problems with customer service that I think should be addressed. First of all, if you subscribe to a comic that isn't on the rack, it can take months to get it. The main problem I have with this is that you have to pay a menial deposit (plus tax) of around 5 bucks just to not order it off amazon.com. This does not really makes sense to me, since you'll get it sooner and most likely in better condition from amazon. Now that B&D basically has a monopoly on comics in Roanoke, I have noticed that things take longer to get. The owner and staff are nice, but there is definitely a false mystique about the logistics of comics. I have lived in much larger cities (Chicago and Jacksonville), and I know that the publishers want to sell them. Waiting months for an issue is ridiculous these days. Overall, an okay place, but the customer service is bad in my opinion. read more

Not just a great comic book shop, but one of the best businesses a customer could expect to experience. I have been a VERY regular customer non-stop for 30 years and nearly every time I go to the store (at least once a week), my experience is wonderful. Rarely have I had negative issues and NEVER had any issues not be resolved immediately and to my complete satisfaction. Terry, the owner and her staff have all bases covered: Incredibly knowledgeable, swift, friendly service, a great community supporter (ask her where all proceeds from alternate cover comic bidding goes), and just great people who love what they do! Very disappointed in this comic book store. Poor selection, customer service is at a minimum. If I don't have a pull lost I can't get any new comics. They have a huge wall of new release but there is very little on the wall. The selection of trade paperbacks and hardcovers is light and it makes the store look like it is not doing well. There are now two new comic book related stores in Roanoke that are larger and have a large backstock of comic books from all years. These other stores, The Basement and Infinity comics are both very customer centric, very invented in what their customers are asking for. B&D used to be the best game in town and now they are becoming less relevant. The best comic book stores in America offer a great customer experience but if I need help or ask about storylines in current comics the owners don't know what is going on. Their take on Free comic book day(FCBD) is to offer one comic per person. Across the country the most successful stores offer any and all and then ask for purchases to support the free stuff. This store needs to wake up or it will get lost and disappear like so many others. read more
