RN74 opened soon after and what better place to try another Meursault but at a place that is ALL about Burgundy? Perusing their vast list I happened on upon the 2005 Chateau de Puligny Montrachet. Everyone at the table raved about the wine. This was a game changer. So much so that I've been obsessed with this wine. I've since found it at the Fifth Floor, Aziza and a handful of other places. The problem with vintage wine is, it's a scarce commodity. As I seek it out it gets harder and harder to find and some point it will no longer exist and I will be sad. However I have the Domaine du Chateau de Puligny-Montrachet to make me a believer in white wine. It's been a huge revelation.

The complexity of flavor and minerality in these wines are fantastic. A biodynamically grown vineyard with manual harvesting, gives way to pneumatic pressing and slow decanting. After 12 months in oaks casks, they're aged for 6 months in tanks and then bottled. Some things do benefit in a mixing of new and old technologies. In fact in the 80's I got either five or six of the eleven cases imported by Wildman Importers each year. The others went to the owner of the Water Club in Manhattan. It was so difficult to buy a case that liquor store owners would have to buy a 100 cases of Borgogne blanc to get one. I was a lucky man. I also have had all their Puligny Montrachet. I find the Clavoillon my favorite. It has been a joyous relationship with greatness, their wine and my drinking. The winery is open to visits and the tasting room is their restaurant in town. Go. Drink. Eat. Drink the best and now you can stay at their hotel across the street from the tasting room.

They had bottles on the tour dating back to the 80s. What I would give to have one of those bottles tonight! They had a tasting part to the tour and there was another group of Americans there as well. It was as if the two guys had been drinking a while and were tipsy and mocking us. Other than that bit of rudeness, it was great. I would have loved to have bought some wine but it was incredibly expensive to ship and the dollar to euro was just silly off balance. It would have been a fortune to send it home.

At her suggestion I ended up with an unfamiliar domaine form St Aubin that was very good and reasonably priced. I found this whole experience to be pleasant and unpretentious unlike a few other experiences at local wine sellers. There was a nice selection available for tasting and covered the whole area around Chassagne-Montrachet. I wholeheartedly recommend Caveau as a place to stop and get to know many small producers in this area. I was looking to discover a small local producer and when I returned to my hotel and asked the owner to put the wine (white) in the fridge to chill a bit she remarked what an interesting bottle and asked where I found it. High praise from a local I believe.

We met the farmer at the office, and he and his wife were so nice and informative! He took us on a very informative tour. The tour was just the 3 of us in our group, so we took time to ask a lot of questions and learn a lot about the business. They make their wine "the old fashioned way" in many respects, so it was incredibly interesting to learn about their processes and their history. The wine cellar was really cool as well. We had an awesome time walking through and seeing their older bottles. All in all, we had a great experience here. We tasted a few wines and bought a few bottles. Everything we tasted was very good, and we are excited to try our bottles when we get home!
