Got recommendations from the hospital pediatrician for 2 other doctors in the same institution. But when I checked yelp, I found Dr Kurz with the best reviews. Went with my gut feeling and set up an appointment with him. He made us feel very comfortable. We weren't rushed. He answered all our questions and prodded us to ask more. By the end of the visit, both baby and parents were super satisfied. It helps that they are part of a big organization. Can get all testing done in one place.

When our pediatrician had to take an extended medical leave, I decided this might finally be the right time to establish care closer to home. Castro Valley Pediatrics came recommended, and I was genuinely hopeful we had found a new practice for my daughter. Unfortunately, our first experience was incredibly disappointing. We arrived 7 minutes late to the appointment because I got turned around trying to find the office. For anyone unfamiliar with the location, it is inside the Safeway shopping center, and if you drive past the entrance, getting turned back around is not particularly easy. My daughter and I hurried upstairs as quickly as we could. At the front desk, I was told the office has a 5-minute grace period, meaning we were 2 minutes past it. The staff member was kind enough to check with the doctor, but the doctor declined to see us. I completely understand that medical practices need policies around lateness, and I would understand if we had arrived so late that seeing us would significantly disrupt the schedule. But we were 7 minutes late. There was no one sitting in the waiting room, and I had pulled my daughter out of school and taken time away from work for this appointment. I would have expected at least some consideration of the circumstances, even if it meant shortening our own appointment time. What bothered me most wasn't that there was a policy. It was the complete lack of flexibility or compassion in how it was applied. When I am choosing the people who will be responsible for my child's healthcare, compassion matters to me just as much as efficiency and policy. Unfortunately, this first interaction left me feeling that this was not the kind of care environment I want for my daughter. So, despite really hoping to establish care closer to home, it looks like we'll be going back to the Peninsula and making the hour-long drive. :/

Last year, our experience with this pediatric clinic was very positive. We were treated well by everyone, from the reception staff to the doctor. Unfortunately, this year's experience was completely different. The clinic initially contacted me and offered to schedule my daughter's annual examination. I appreciated the call because my schedule had made it difficult for me to arrange the appointment myself. The day before the appointment, after I had already confirmed it electronically, I received another call requesting insurance information. I was in a work meeting and explained twice that I could not speak at that time. I offered to call back after 5:30 p.m. or provide the information early the following morning before our 10:00 a.m. appointment. Instead of acknowledging these options, the staff member continued asking the same questions and then asked whether someone else could answer them. I explained that I was working and that no one else was available. She then stated, "If you do not answer my questions, your daughter's appointment will be cancelled." I found this unnecessarily disrespectful. I had clearly communicated that I was willing to provide the information at a different time. No one called me back later that day, and I did not receive any notice that the appointment had been cancelled. To prevent further problems, my teenage daughter and I arrived early the next morning so that I could provide all the necessary information in person. The receptionist asked for a physical insurance card. I explained that my insurance provides only an electronic card and asked how I could submit it. Rather than offering assistance, the receptionist told me to upload it through MyChart. I explained that I did not have an active MyChart login. I had previously received only a link that allowed me to confirm the appointment using my daughter's date of birth. It did not provide access to an account, and I had never received a username or password. When I tried to explain this, the receptionist gave me a scornful look and continued responding in a dismissive manner. She requested my name and date of birth but did not clearly explain how this would help me upload the insurance card. At that point, I felt that my questions and efforts to cooperate were being treated as an inconvenience. Because of the way we were treated, I asked to cancel my daughter's appointment. This situation could have been resolved easily through more respectful communication and basic cooperation, unfortunately this clinic is evidently in lack of such 'frivolities'.
