Why bother other than for cheap Italian with little to no flair. You get what you pay for. Cheap food and a cheap experience. Made reservation on Opentable. I'm VIP level but the restaurant did not have it. Asked to wait in the bar. It's a Tuesday night and they're packed so I guess that's a good thing. Waited 20 minutes past my missing reservation for a table. Loud, dim and airy filled with friends, dates and families engaged in food and conversation. The couple next to me had returned after a couple months and inquired about a fish special they loved. After describing the meal, the waiter picked up on it and apologized it was. It available. He described today's fish but when asked "what else do you suggest?" he replied, "everything on the menu is good". Really? That's amazing! Points for knowing the fish but dings for dumbing down the entire menu. Prix Fix and 2-3 course options on top of the regular offerings. Nice touch with good pairing but I'm on a mission of meat. Starters- beef carpaccio: fairly well with light olive oil. No fresh cracked pepper offered. Lucky for me, the S&P on the table are grinders and I'm used to servicing myself. Main- osobucco: no thank you. Fatty and tough. The meat is supposed to fall off the bone. Not be sawed off. The gravy was fine but the potato pancakes were limp and lifeless. The herbs spread, not so evenly, over the meat greatly overpower the natural warmth of this meal. This is not a dish to enjoy but rather remember with disdain. Small and unsatifyling. Wine- the ciante by the glass (only 3 BTG to choose from): fine. What choice do I have. In the middle of my lack luster evening, the waiter comes over and removes the empty chair from my two top in order to set a five. Yes, it's available but I would greatly appreciate you asking first. I'm so not impressed with Olive. In fact, it's been a huge disappointment until the bill came. At least I did not pay much for zero service and lame food. The price alone will raise the star to two. One redeeming quality, Vin Santo on the desert menu...but no biscotti. What!?! How about waiting 12 minutes for the server to return so you can ask for your tab? Yep. With empty wine glass and napkin on the table the entire time. Staying in this hotel, I will come back and try something less difficult and verify my reservation is received (even thought Opentable acknowledged it). We came here cause an app called Open Rice is giving 50% off for the place. Having come here id honestly say if it wasn't for the 50% there's no way id come. That said, my score is given based on my experience, and so 4 star it is! With the discount, food actually is quite reasonably priced and 3 course a la cart still only cost me £20, which wasn't bad considering I had some good mixed grills! Environment is worst that a restaurant that generally charges £40 should be, but for my 50% off experience it was alright. If feels like a place that has the classic wide variety menu, but they are all similar stuff... Anyway, wasn't great, but certainly not bad. read more

We visited twice in Olives at the Christmas time. The first one was perfect: peaceful atmosphere, a bottle of wonderful Valpollicella, and so tasty food prepeared with style. The charming waitress was friendly, communicative and professional. My filetto di branzino (pan-roasted sea bass) was absolutely perfect. The next visit food and wine were stil high quality. But there were much more people, among others many children. The staff was obviously busy. But the worst thing was that we felt the waiters wanted us leave as soon as possible. That's why I have to drop out a star. By the way, the Olives has the very respectable list of grappas. I recommend to taste some of them. read more

The service is outstanding. The food is a little bland. The cocktails are delicious. This left me unsure of how many stars to give this place. I settled with 3, but if the food was a little better, it would definitely be 4 stars. On the other hand, the service is one of the friendliest I have ever had. All of the staff, bartenders, managers, servers, were so attentive and went out of their way to make sure everything was alright. I was staying in the Bailey's Hotel, which is where this restaurant is located, and therefore, conveniently ate at Olives a few times. Out of everything that I tried, my favorite was the mixed grilled seafood dish. Their insalata mixta is also pretty tasty with some fresh ground pepper! If you are staying in the hotel or in the area, this place will suffice for a decent and satisfying meal. However, I probably wouldn't travel far to eat at Olives. Tip: If you like spicy things, try their Chili and Ginger cocktail - delicious! read more

You would be hard pressed to find any bar in the U.S. that makes their apple martinis fresh from a real apple. The drinks are phenomenal, do not leave without one. The food was excellent (a venison dish and a ravioli dish) and the service way beyond what my sisters and I (read: americans) were accustomed to. Not only did the server come to check on us, but the manager did....several times. We never had an empty glass or empty plate on the table for longer than I swear was 15 seconds. It was quite nice, but a bit unusual for us. This is probably the best option for restaurants on Gloucester and it's not a bad one. Loved it here. After coming from an awful dinner my travel companion and I walked in off the street and sat down for some more much needed wine drinking. We were not disappointed. The service was wonderful, the bartender was funny and welcoming. The atmosphere genuinely felt comfortable and inviting, and not at all like it was being put on or fake. I know it is a hotel bar and there are plenty of other options around the neighborhood but if you are looking for something a little nicer or happen to be staying at the hotel, definitely go for an after dinner drink or 3. And luckily for the hotel, after experiencing such an nice time at the bar, in between drinks I walked right over to the reception desk and booked a room for the next evening! read more

OMG!!! Well named! The most delicious olives I've ever had! Smokey flavor. Excellent service. I ordered a cocktail they hadn't heard of, It was immediately made clear that if I knew the ingredients they would be happy to make it for me, which I did and they made a near perfect one first time out! I went in for a quiet and heart warming lunch. The place was not full, looks refined but not pretentious. The food is very tasty, very delicate flavours, but portions are not big (though enough). I have only compliments. Service was very attentive too. read more

The food was extremely overpriced and they took advantage of us being tourists. They charged us 6£ for a bottle of water even though we asked for tap. The ravioli was amazing but the fact that the portion wasn't even enough for one person but it was still so much money is no right. Okay this place sucks for breakfast. Staying at the hotel and it is included and the same freakin thing every day. Dinner is meh. Service is TERRIBLE. These people don't really speak English, and won't bring coffee until the meal is over because there is one machine for the whole restaurant. Ate at this restaurant tonight, a midweek evening, that wasn't overly busy so the ambience was pleasant. It was a double date, with two couples ordering four meals.The portions were not huge, but adequately small. Starters were fresh juicy olives, baskets of bread that came with inadequately portioned, tiny dishes of balsamic, oil dip. We had to ask for more. The tomato, garlic, basil focaccia was much better. My lasagne was very disappointing and was sent back, as it seemed to be layers of sludgey pasta, inadequately filled and tasting less divine than a homemade lasagne. They were kind enough to let me reorder the beetroot, oxtail risotto which was beautifully presented and rather tasty. I was lucky that my friend had ordered this and so I had the opportunity to taste and copy her choice. My partner had a seafood tagliatelle, which whilst it looked less presentable, was rather good. My friends partner had the minced duck, macaroni/penne style pasta which I can only describe as 'meh', rather dull. The three desserts ordered were better (-I skipped out, preferring to taste my companions' choices, without risking the calories of a whole dessert!). Beautifully presented and very satisfying. One came with a pear ice cream, which was more of a sorbet, but had a wonderful taste of authentic pears and not some synthetic pear concoction. We were lucky as we had a card that allowed a fifty percent discount on the food, but not the bottles of house red, nor other beverages. The wine was surprisingly good for the lowest price bottle. The entire meal came to about £128 which factoring in the fifty percent food discount, was very reasonable given that we had nearly all had three courses, with wine, a couple of tomato juices, sparkling water and coffees all round. The staff were beyond criticism. From the chap at the bar, to the lovely women that served us, there is nothing but praise to be given. A good night where disappointing main courses, that could have been bigger, have made me give three stars. If I could have given three and a half, I would but four would be a stretch. read more
