Great pace!! This place has everything, deli, fresh bread and a full liquor store. Not much more you need.

A busy little market that doubles as a Shell gas station…read more They don't brew fresh pots of coffee, instead using machines that pre-measure the amounts and offers you the option to leave room. I bet you've seen this somewhere. A highlight is the Sumatra Mandheling dark roast that comes out perfect every time. I've been known to stop just for the coffee and nothing else. But I'm strange and I have to pass this station a dozen times a week. On to the gas prices which are pretty competitive when you consider there is no immediate competition. My method is simply to note all the gas prices in my town as I drive to Charlevoix, compare those numbers with Bay Market and then neighboring Petoskey. On the way back home, I reward the lowest bidder by filling up. The rest is boiler plate stuff. Beer, wine, snacks, pop and sweets. A small difference is they carry grocery store items such as canned goods like soup and Beefaroni. Boxes of noodles and rice, etc. I've only encountered two fellows and neither was overly nice. Not mean, just matter of fact, you're a number, cash or charge, have a nice day. But I don't much care since I'm here for a cuppa Joe! At least the store is clean and one of the guys is very artistic. Different drawings and price menus are on the wall each week. It's a decent time, but I wouldn't scurry down here unless you needed something. 11/23

However, sometimes life intervenes and leaves little choice. Cue a sudden automotive problem while on vacation, hours from home. The only place in town to get an oil change is, in fact, Walmart. I rolled up on a Saturday afternoon while the rain poured down to match my bleak, aggravated mood. An underpaid and highly charming employee gave me directions to the oil change centre while I prayed my car wouldn't implode spontaneously and I still carry memory of his friendly smile on that wretched holiday to hell. I pulled up to the service centre and had 20 minutes to burn in this Super Walmart while they replaced my air filter(s), oil filter, and oil. I credit this Walmart for being cleaner than any other Walmart I've seen, including one on opening day. The place really is spotless with few of the marring features I attribute to the "Walmart Malaise." No clothes lie on the ground, no disorderly racks confound the mind, and the whole place was spic and span. Count me impressed. Through the aisles, everything was stocked and where it should be. Was this the Twilight Zone? The grocery section deserves credit for an appealing display of food and tidiness, too. I ended up picking up a few staples and breezed through the self-checkouts. The attendant was good humoured and friendly. Was this the panacea for my horrible vacation? Alas, it was the only day I spent in Petoskey because I cut my losses and returned home the very day I arrived, sick baby, sick car, and tired family in tow. But I'll say this: the walmart experience was actually enjoyable thanks to a sparkling clean store.

I did not realize how bad it was outside and had already placed a pick up order otherwise I would have just gone in myself. I believe the pickup attendant that assisted that day was named Al. He did an awesome job handing all the pick up orders by himself (there were many cars in the pick up area). Al literally climbed through mounds of snow dragging the cart through and withstanding the crazy winds. Not once did he complain. He was very polite and kind given the circumstances and being short staffed. Al deserves a raise, additional PTO, and recognition. I wish I had cash for him at the time!
