After living in Kentucky for years it's hard not to deal with the department of revenue! As with…read moreeverything in government in this state it's a little outdated. Didja know Louisville has a Taxpayer Service Center in a real office staffed by real people? They…read moredo! I came here last week because I needed a form that wasn't available on their website. Believe it or not, the website instructed that I should print and fill out a "form requisition" (which was online) and mail it in to get the other form. When I read that I had to look over my shoulder for a hidden camera. Since the deadline was approaching, rather than trust the timeliness of both the USPS and the Kentucky Revenue Service, I marched down to this office to see if they could hand me my needed document. Did they have my form on hand? Of course not. How would the bureaucracy feed itself if they did that? But a very kind worker bee gave me a post-it note and told me if I wrote my name and address on the form, she would make sure it got sent quickly. Sure enough, my desired form (the correct one!) arrived in two days flat. Efficiency in the midst of chaos! A gleam of competence in a sea of WTF! The little stuff does matter.

Not a bad location. If I don't renew my tags online, I will typically visit one of the suburban…read morelocations to avoid any crowds, and downtown. I had to visit this location twice over the winter. First visit: To have something corrected on our marriage license since the Middletown location made yet another mistake(the lady out there made a half-dozen mistakes on our license, five of which we caught when we were there). This was a simple in-out. The lady told us we could've waited until we filed it to have them correct(white it out)/to save us a trip, but I didn't want to wait(a-n-x-i-e-t-y about such things). Second visit: A return to drop off and file the marriage. Again.. a simple in-out during a snowy time in the city. We went ahead and paid for 2 certified copies. Both times were great. The employees were nice, helpful, and talkative(without doing too much). Parking seems to be easier downtown now... they have signs posted around for street parking so you can text a number and pay/reload your time. I like that. Every city should implement it. The building is also an old courthouse, so it has that historical flair. Good visit. If I ever need to go in for tag renewal, I wouldn't hesitate to use the downtown branch again.

Government services. Glory day. Not always everyone's favorite thing to do…read more This social security office isn't terrible though. We had to visit to apply for my wife's social security card. Immigration Note: The immigration documents have a checkbox that after a green card approval, USCIS will send over your paperwork to the SSA to save yourself a trip. The problem? As far as I can tell, USCIS doesn't do this and the people we asked at the SSA about this didn't seem to know anything about this checkbox on the immigration forms. So with that, we had to setup an appointment for her social security card. (I still want to know the mechanism that sees the checked box and forwards the paperwork from USCIS to the SSA-if anyone knows this, send me a message and let me know---Just curious). The process was simple. The staff was nice. My only peeve was the appointment scheduling. They tell you that you need an appointment but that's mainly to stop hundreds of people from descending on the office at any given time. We scheduled and showed up 20ish minutes before our designated time. When you check in, you're put in a queue. It has nothing to do with your actual appointment time. We were seen 45 minutes after our appointment time but there were people there that had waited much longer that day. We were told the card would be here in 7-10 days. We received it in a week.

So, it really surprises me when I read some of the negative reviews. The employees have been very friendly, explained any relevant information in a clear and concise manner, and provided all necessary information (when items were missing, etc.) to quickly close gaps on what I needed to get accomplished. They have always been incredibly patient and often offer smiles. Some visits have been busier with customers than others. Regardless how busy they've been, it's always been obvious that the employees work diligently and as quickly as possible to meet the customers' needs and to move onto the next. The visits and wait times have never been excessively long. They provide 5 stations to take exams. The main waiting area has plenty of seating. There are two places where photos are taken - maybe one for driver's license and the other for state ids. There are approximately 6-7 employees to help with all the BMV needs. The parking is not bad. The parking lot isn't huge, but I believe is adequately sized for them. It sort of sits on a hill, so it can be a little awkward maneuvering in / out of spaces.

The wait is extremely short, the facilities clean and orderly and everyone I've talked to is amazing at explaining and being patient. The East branch refused to even look at my car because it had a crack and I brought it to this one and they understood my situation and said to get it fixed but they would let me move forward with getting my car registered. The sheriff even recommended a couple car repair places. The people were very thorough in making sure we understood why they were doing things the way they were and were even understanding about the situation that I was in. I can honestly say this is the best (and only positive) experience I've had with a DMV. What ever this branch is doing it needs to teach the others to do! I did NOT have this experience at the East branch.
