One of the most iconic and secure military installations [Fort Knox KY]…read more We took a little detour to see Fort Knox before heading to Mammoth Cave National Park. At the entrance we took some fun photos at the signs. I am not a military personnel and the only time I entered a military base as a civilian was in Fairfield CA many years ago at Travis AFB when my brother (US Army) was hospitalized and where he passed away. This Army installation was named after Henry Knox, the first Secretary of War. Fort Knox refers to the United States Bullion Depository which was a separate building from the Army base located at a far distance due to its high security. The impenetrable fortress was just a plain building but nonetheless a sight to see. When someone mentions 'Fort Knox' in a conversation or as an idiom now I can actually say I've seen it! LoL! Very cool. Review #3917

After living in Kentucky for years it's hard not to deal with the department of revenue! As with…read moreeverything in government in this state it's a little outdated. At least it was when I lived there. All I can say is be prepared for a time consuming process to resolve any issues. It's the little aggravating details that get me. Things like getting my mailing address correct. Lots of phone calls placed. Three stars is generous.

Didja know Louisville has a Taxpayer Service Center in a real office staffed by real people? They…read moredo! I came here last week because I needed a form that wasn't available on their website. Believe it or not, the website instructed that I should print and fill out a "form requisition" (which was online) and mail it in to get the other form. When I read that I had to look over my shoulder for a hidden camera. Since the deadline was approaching, rather than trust the timeliness of both the USPS and the Kentucky Revenue Service, I marched down to this office to see if they could hand me my needed document. Did they have my form on hand? Of course not. How would the bureaucracy feed itself if they did that? But a very kind worker bee gave me a post-it note and told me if I wrote my name and address on the form, she would make sure it got sent quickly. Sure enough, my desired form (the correct one!) arrived in two days flat. Efficiency in the midst of chaos! A gleam of competence in a sea of WTF! The little stuff does matter.

I have been slowly visiting all the courthouses in Indiana and found most of the architecture…read moredating back over 100 years. Clark County Courthouse is an exception. This 1970's Courthouse is classic Mid-Century Modern building designed by Indianapolis-based architects Wright, Porteous and Lowe. Wright, Porteous and Lowe designed many notable structures including the City-County building and Children's Museum in Indianapolis. Jeffersonville is the county seat for Clark County. This is the third courthouse to serve the county. Most notable, the building has beautiful arches surrounding the main structure. My visit inside was brief as the interior architecture as not as interesting as the beautiful facade. I saw lots of run-of-the-mill offices. The deputy that I spoke with did not know of any history regarding the building and he was busy with his deputy duties. Outside, there is a refreshingly modern Veteran's Memorial. Friendly protesters were protesting outside the building. This is a fully working Courthouse. We found free street parking near the building. The building is worth a drive-by if you like modern architecture (which I do).

The single deck cantilever bridge was built in 1961 and honors John F Kennedy. Going southbound there is a beautiful view of downtown Louisville skyline and the Ohio River. In recent years repairs in the bridge have become costly so they instituted a $2 toll for EZPass users and $4 for others. Locals, of course, hate the tolls. The bridge was recently painted.
