If you are shopping for wine, THIS is the best shop in the area. The owner is a very knowledgeable wine connoisseur, whose expertise can help you select the perfect bottle. When the owner is not present, an elegant young man runs the store with an extensive amount of knowledge of wines, well versed on the regions & types of grapes, who can spurt off a quick summary of each wine, and help you choose something perfectly specific to what you like. I have gone into this shop, and wirh very little info from me about what I'm lokking for, both individuals helped me to select wines that became my favorites. Both assist shoppers with a friendly, easy going tone, while being so thoroughly educated , that it makes picking up a bottle, a nice, no pressure, easy experience. They have excellent excellent wines that are low price point, along with mid price point, as well as some of the finest most high end wines. Currently I'm enjoying an affordable bottle of cotes du Rhone that I never would have chosen without the help of the gentlemen working at the store. In addition to wines, the store has all the spirits you may need , minus the gross , hangover inducing, and college party worthy liquors that would ruin the classy aesthetic of this wonderful shop. Basically, the offerings of this store fit w the vibe that the interior and the owner have created, a CURATED selection of what you want to be drinking this evening, or bringing to your next dinner w friends. When I step in this store, I'm not stepping into some generic big box liquour store and wanting to grab and go because the store & experience of wine/alcoholic shopping feels "ick"... rather, I'm stepping into a classic asthetic of historical wooden shelving, beautiful bottles, and I feel like I could be in France, or Italy, last but not least, the owner and his gentleman staff member respect and love wine, and you want to support a privately owned business like that when you are buying wine. Came in to get an alcoholic beverage. I am not someone who knows or cares to know their alcohol. I was with a group of friends and we were trying to decide on what to get. When we ask about champagne after showing the sole proprietor a bottle, he acts condescending telling us it's a cava. Turns out, it's all sparkling wine anyway. After reading the negative reviews of this excellent shop, I wondered whether the posters had actually been there. Sad to think there are people so miserable that they get their jollies by posting 1-star reviews of small businesses. I have known Charles Derbyshire, the owner of Olde Mill Wines & Spirits, for many years. He loves what he does and it shows every time I come in. His knowledge of wine is deep and broad. His inventory is curated to reflect that. But Charles enjoys helping his customers find the right bottle, based on their tastes, price range and whether they are having the wine with food or just quaffing. Customers who put themselves in his hands will not be disappointed. I also want to give a shout out to Charles's young but capable staff. He has taught them well. I always find the staff helpful and, contrary to one previous commenter, not at all condescending. In fact, I find it remarkable that everyone who works in the shop maintains a friendly and helpful attitude, considering how they worked through the pandemic under difficult conditions. If you have read this far, I hope you will try Olde Mill the next time you are in Rhinebeck. Small businesses like this one are truly what make America great! I wish I could give this place 0 stars. I stopped in with full intentions of purchasing a bottle of wine as a gift. I asked the man working where his bottles of rose were located and he looked at me like I had 6 heads and said "they're all over the store". I thought he would recommend me something, or in general just be nicer. So incredible rude. I left right after the encounter. Why would I spend my money in an establishment that doesn't have any customer service whatsoever. As I logged onto yelp - I see that I'm not the only person who has had this problem. The owner needs to re-evaluate his staff, and if that was the owner...you're certainly losing business due to your attitude. Just because you have a storefront in rhinebeck doesn't mean you're better than everyone else. read more

I stopped by during Memorial Day weekend to purchase some champagne and as soon as I walked in, the owner's son gave me a hostile look. I asked him for some recommendations for something sweet and he smugly brought over some cava. Since I am not a wine aficionado, I asked him what is was and he just condescendingly repeated that it's cava, as if I should know exactly what it is because he said it again. I asked him to make a comparison to something a casual drinker might understand but he just rolled his eyes and kept saying it's cava. I don't understand what compels someone to act like that, but I hope he has a better understanding of wine than he does of running a shop. My biggest regret is still going through my purchase because there is no reason someone with such a poor gage of customer service deserves to stay in business. If you don't believe me, just look at similar experiences that people have had at this place. They truly deserve zero stars. read more

The best thing about Olde Mill is the owner, Charles, who has forgotten more about wine than I've ever known. Tell him what you usually drink, what you will be eating, and how much you want to spend, and he will pick a bottle that you will like. If you are a repeat customer, he will remember you and either make sure you get what you like, or, he will introduce you to new wines that will challenge, interest, and expand your tastes. We had just arrived in town for the weekend and were lucky enough to come across this shop. Exhausted from the drive and being stuck in Ulster County Fair traffic, we were greeted with a tasting of sauvignon blanc and a recommendation to dine at a lovely bistro nearby. I always make a point of buying my wine at Olde Mill. It feels like I am entering a friend's house -- always a warm greeting and a sincere inquiry as to how I am doing. The owner always has great suggestions for wine that I might like based on my budget, what I am planning to have with the wine (of if I am just enjoying a bottle of wine for cocktails). His selection is good and, his knowledge of his wines and how different wines compare is like a little wine 101 class. I always walk out more knowledgable than when I walked in -- and with good wine (or gin or bourbon) to boot. Some wine shops can feel a little snooty and can get carried away with wine culture. The owner just wants you to drink the best wine that is in your price range so that you can really enjoy the experience. It is also easy to find in Rhinebeck too. Was in Rhinebeck last weekend for the Thanksgiving holiday and stopped in Olde Mill to inquire about a particular Zinfandel (about $20 a bottle) my aunt just loves. My intent was to order a case for her. From the moment we walked in, the proprietor was incredibly dismissive, condescending and rude. He stated that he only carries one Zinfandel and that he is not in the business of storing wine, but rather to sell wine. My husband had his hand on a very fine scotch he was also going to purchase ... instead, we left!! That's ok, I'll order the case of wine and purchase our scotch from the shop around the corner, where service is their top priority. read more
