Now I shall back up my previous statement with the reasons: The food is extremely expensive for the basic selection available, it is also poorly executed, needless to say I have eaten much better for half the cost. The owner is constantly miserable and makes you feel uncomfortable for just being in the field and forest, there is no local/friendly atmosphere like there is in many other small cafes in Lindfield. Speaking of small cafes, the field and forest really is small, with a noticeable amount less seating than many others of the same size in the same village. Needless to say I left the Field and Forest feeling uncomfortable, ripped off and overall disappointed.. However the small amount of good in this otherwise disappointing pile is that the young lady who was also there was a delight and very helpful, if she owned the place I would return, however under current management. I can not recommend the Field and Forest to anyone under any circumstances.

In this case, the residents of Haywards Heath are the benefactors. Grape and Grain took over the premises and offer aslightly different take on the off licence. With a well stocked deli (stocking some amazing local cheeses and pate) and a selection of chilli sauces, chutneys and other tasty bites you get more than cans of Stella or Special Brew. The ale selection at the Grape is likewise impressive with a range of local and quirky bottles that you just don't find in the chain offies. Most will have a discount on buying in three's and my biggest challenge is having to limit my purchasing to 3 bottles! I haven't purchased much wine from here, but the selection is once more of a high calibre, focusing on the wine buff rather than the bargain basement bottles. The shop also hold regular tasting sessions on the weekend and I passed an enjoyable few hours sampling the offerings of the Fallen Angel Brewery. The Grape's staff are really friendly and always up for a chat. It's the kind of shop where you end up on first name basis and can easily become one of the locals. All your other expected supplies from tobacco, mixers and such like are on sale and they will also wrap your purchases into gift packs if you want to give an alternative present to a friend. All in all, this is what a food and drink shop should be and you can tell that it is run by lovers of the finer things. Extreme top marks for the Grape and Grain!

Middle Farm is a really lovely farm in Firle, near Lewes, and not far from Brighton. I've often…read morevisited purely for their amazing farm shop, which is packed with tasty locally-produced goodies. However, Middle Farm is also a working farm, making it a great place to take children. There is an outdoor playground and a nature trail and of course all sorts of exciting farm animals for the kids to learn about, including cows, chickens, pigs and donkeys. You can even watch the beautiful Jersey cows being milked! Adults, be sure to check out the cider shop, home to a large collection of draught ciders and parries, from all over the country. . Magners drinkers beware- these are real ciders, meaning they can often taste quite farmy- personally I think most of them are delicious, but they can take a bit of getting used to! Apples are pressed on site to make delicious Sussex apple juice- there are often demonstrations going on outside in fine weather. There's also a café serving cream teas and other cakes and treats as well as an outdoor picnic area. Middle Farm can serve as a great pit stop either before or after a walk, as there is beautiful countryside surrounding the site.

Middle Farm is a brilliant showcase of animal husbandry with the townie family in mind (wellies are not essential, but certainly useful). It is a working/show farm combination, and if you so desire, you can buy some of the local produce at the nearby farm shop - albeit at some pretty racy prices. So what have they got? Enough to give Noahs ark a run for his money I would say: Piggies, Llaamas, Goats, Cows, Wabbits, Peacocks, Ferrets and some (seriously) funky chickens to name a few. Quite a few of the chicken and bantam breeds have free roam during the day which really adds to the all-under-one barn roof kind of feel to the place. There's also play areas a restaurant and, as mentioned earlier a really fantastic farm shop. Your children/inner child will not be bored.
