Of course being a shopper I had to inquire. They were Fortnum & Mason bags. Of course this was our next stop. As we were perusing the aisles for a good strong breakfast tea we were approached by a tall energetic man who offered to assist us......and assist was an understatement. John B in the red coat gave us THE greatest experience ever in Fortnum & Mason and London. He gave us some history of the store and introduced us to every level of the store. I have to acknowledge each and every person I encountered on this day because you all made it a true London experience and I am forever grateful. John B thank you for your tea knowledge and enthusiasm and as a result, I came for one box of tea and left with three boxes of tea, and a canister of tea. To the beautiful young lady who sold me the box of delicious candy, and was told that great things were coming her way. We then ventured to household items and there was a great presentation and we were convinced we needed the cherry liquor which is delicious. To the young man in the alcohol section, you did a fabulous job describing the beverages and we left with a bottle of pink gin. John B returned and introduced us to the champagne bar and I purchased two bottles of champagne. Again thank you thank you and thank you again for a wonderful experience for us during our travel.

In this case, the residents of Haywards Heath are the benefactors. Grape and Grain took over the premises and offer aslightly different take on the off licence. With a well stocked deli (stocking some amazing local cheeses and pate) and a selection of chilli sauces, chutneys and other tasty bites you get more than cans of Stella or Special Brew. The ale selection at the Grape is likewise impressive with a range of local and quirky bottles that you just don't find in the chain offies. Most will have a discount on buying in three's and my biggest challenge is having to limit my purchasing to 3 bottles! I haven't purchased much wine from here, but the selection is once more of a high calibre, focusing on the wine buff rather than the bargain basement bottles. The shop also hold regular tasting sessions on the weekend and I passed an enjoyable few hours sampling the offerings of the Fallen Angel Brewery. The Grape's staff are really friendly and always up for a chat. It's the kind of shop where you end up on first name basis and can easily become one of the locals. All your other expected supplies from tobacco, mixers and such like are on sale and they will also wrap your purchases into gift packs if you want to give an alternative present to a friend. The Anchovy and Butter Soldiers (small piece of bread with butter and anchovies) were salty and exploded with taste. And the Prosciutto bruschette with herbed Goat Cheese and fig jam was outstanding. It's fascinating to watch as the chef starts with a piece of maltose sugar, which is elastic and this is formed into a ring shaped and with repeated dipping into toasted flour to keep the strands separate, is repeatedly stretched and twisted with each repetition tripling the number of strands. The final resulting collection of fine strands is then divided into small bunches which are put around crushed peanuts. Eaten immediately, these are soft and quite moreish. The chef says that these can be kept in the fridge but they will turn hard. It's entertainment as much as food which draws the crowds. Let's face it, it's a bleak state of affairs down Commercial Street at Tesco Local. I can't even bring myself to go in there. The amount of plastic wrapping and pre-packaged foods just makes me want to barf, no joke. I just can't most of the time, I'd rather go anywhere else. So yes, while As Nature Intended is a bit pricier -- it's also a LOT nicer, has WAY better food things in it and if I want to pay 100 quid for a bag of (basically) snacks, so it shall be done. Sometimes one just wants to feel wholesome, right? Yes. Of particular interest here is their health and beauty section -- well stocked and comprehensive. They carry REN, which I adore and also full range of Wedela which I buy often for the little person in our house. The soups are great, and they have CO-YO (coconut milk yogurt) which is my favorite thing of 2015 thus far. Staff is friendly. You'll be broke but you'll be happy. To add the staff are super friendly and delightful whenever I visit, always displaying a smile on their face and asking if any help is required (it is always the small gestures that count). I can literally spend near to an hour browsing the nut butters, chocolate aisle and fruit pantry, and last but not least - they even provide a sink for you to wash your fruit and veg if you wish to consume it straight away. Also, if you are lucky you may be greeted with a sample of peanut butter or other tasty snack to help you through your shop.
