The advantages of a local grocers are that you can select as much or as little as you wish and it'll cost a little less than the local Budgens, Tesco Metro or any other local vendor. As I say, it's not massive but has everything and a little more than you'd need and the staff are pleasant. Support your local fruiterer! Ian

They have a wonderful selection of fresh fruit and vegetables, some of my favourites include watermelon (a slice for 75p), huge ripe avocados, sprouts, melon grapes. This is the first place where I found salad sprouts - a common staple in the States - and they have a selection including broccoli, lentils and chickpea sprouts. They also have cool things like a selection of freshly squeezed apple juice, and quail eggs. Everything I have bought there has been in perfect condition, with a sell-by date well in advance of anything I find in the supermarkets. Everything is also hugely cheaper than at Sainsburys or Tescos, even half price in many cases. In this day and age, its also refreshing to have the opportunity to pick and choose, and only buy what you need - hard to find as everything is prepackaged now. I don't have a single bad thing to say about the place and I encourage everyone who lives in the area to check it out.

It's got everything you can possibly think you might need when preparing anything Indian/Asian. I love the spices and the spicemixes but also the fruits (I spotted fresh Jackfruit) and vegetables (of course very fresh, good and dirt cheap chillies), the Himalaya herbal toothpaste :-) , the weird drinks, the ghee, the huge bags of rice and the enormous collection of incense (again really cheap). The food and even non-food will easily make you spend an hour(s) walking around looking at all the different things they sell and make you remember the great food of India/Asia.

So if you are shopping staff are under such pressure to stack shelves quickly that they will continue pushing their cages with fresh stock into customers rather than wait a few seconds to let someone pass. Also on several occasions I have found out of date products, if you alert staff to it you always get the same response, leave it there we'll deal with it later. I don't know how many claims they've had to deal with for customer injuries or illness. Have observed that when customers raise issues with staff about products not up to quality staff look scared rather than empowered to do the right thing. Timidly they call management over who never seem to deal with the issue, it's always the customers fault somehow, do visit the store and you will see for yourself.

The Ancient Market of Kingston upon Thames has been in action for over 800 years and in my youth…read morewas massively tarted up to involve water features and a very shiny gold statue of Queen Victoria. On a weekday you have plenty of your classic cockney fruit & veg sellers but also increasingly stalls selling things like ostrich burgers and last time I was in town on a Saturday there was enough street food to rival some of the great central London markets. There's also way more space to sit than any of those markets, and even if you can't find a spot in the market place you are seconds away from the riverfront which is also all re-done and fancy. Also remember you are close by the Coronation Stone, upon which 7 kings were crowned in the 900s! Yeah...I love Kingston. And I know a disturbing amount of obscure historical facts about it.
