Let me start by saying I'm only giving them 1 star because it is required to post the review. If I could give them NEGATIVE 5 I would. My GC has been with us for 8 years through 1.5 Million dollars in renovations. We have never had a problem with anyone working on our home through all 3 phases. Everyone gets paid and never waits for a check (or cash). The only exception to our great experience with over a dozen companies is Old Mill. The job is roughly 141K in cost. They were chosen because they install turf and we were using it in the rear of our property. The job was plantings, sprinklers & turf. The entire exterior landscaping minus lighting. Our electrician handled that from our GC. I'm going to list some of the numerous screw ups and the FRAUD they tried to use on our job. They were given professionally drawn landscape plans. There were no change or surprises. 1. The west facing side of our property is full sun exposure and had 32 Thuga Giants installed. They waited until a few days before the first frost to install them. ALL 32 died. They were required to replace them as per our contract. 2. We built a pool house on the property. The sprinkler control box is INSIDE the utility room. The control wire was run through the wall to the exterior BY OLD MILL. All they had to do was mount the box and start the system. For some reason (unexplained) the worker (owners son) decided WITHOUT TALKING TO ANYONE. To drill a NEW 1 Inch hole though the wall to the exterior and run a new wire. STAPLING IT ACROSS A FINISHED PAINTED WALL. Leaving the remainder of the hole unfilled with daylight showing through. Then he rather the bury the wire in the outside, staples it straight across the siding. DESTROYING 15 PIECES OF NEW HARDI PLANK SIDING. We were livid and should have fired them right then and there. But we gave them ANOTHER chance. Strike 2. Next how did they repay our kindness? NEXT UP! 3. Now for the FRAUD. See #1? He is thinking how can he recover the cost of replacing all those trees? The turf. Thats the next phase of the job. When we met with them originally a sample of two different turfs was provided 75 & 60. We paid for 75 and had it in the contract. It is higher quality (thicker, longer & better color). Guess what showed up at our house on installation day? ? You guessed it SIXTY, 60. I saved the samples and made sure I was home the day of installation. It is obvious as soon as you look at it. They we told not to put it down and have the boss come by. HE ADMITTED THE FRAUD!!!!! The job is over 1500 sq ft. Thats how he was going to get US TO BACK DOOR pay for all the trees he had to replace due to his negligence. More on that next. 4. Well it's spring almost summer and 16 of the trees he replaced the first time are now dying. He was notified and asked to check to see if the sprinkler (drip system) was correctly installed and working properly. Who does he send? His son again! We were not home. But we watched the RING camera footage. Kid digs a small whole, feels if the ground is damp. And leaves. Sprinklers are good we are told....Only problem....It monsooned the night before! Fast forward 2 weeks, trees are looking worse. I call him to ask him what's up here? The drip sprinkler is 4 to 6 feet away from the trees and it seems the trees are all dry and dying again. He starts screaming on the phone. I told him he will not be seeing the remaining balance and he can quit if he likes to. Turns out.......The sprinklers were installed wrong! If I could give the company negative stars I would. If you are planning on using them GOOD LUCK. I would not let them take care of a house plant. They are terrible. read more

Place looks small, but is deceivingly large. When you start walking on one of their paths, you can keep going forever. Really nice arrangements all over, plus excellent customer service. What John designed was exactly what we had discussed.The workers, under Patrick's guidance, arrived on time, set to work immediately , removed the damaged plants, positioned the new plants, asked my opinion and for my final approval, and planted my new bushes with expert spacing. I purchased one yard of topsoil from them last weekend. At first glance the topsoil had a rich dark color but once I got it home and began adding it to my lawn I noticed there was a lot a debris mixed in. Small rocks, wood, mulch and even several pieces of broken glass and a few 1x1 bathroom tiles. I am no expert on topsoil but overall in my opinion the quality is not very good. The price wasn't bad ($38) but I would rather spend a little more for better quality. read more

We have been doing plantings the past 3 years and Old Mill has made our property look amazing. Each install is better than the last. Great products and ideas, fair prices and great work staff. John, Linda and the installers are all so friendly and professional. Rude people. Went to buy a Christmas tree. Not one worker greeted or offered to help me or the other customer there. Walked around for about 15 minutes before leaving. It worked out though. They wanted $180 for an 8ft Fraser Fir. I went to Stew Leonards and got an 8ft Fraser for $99. The Stew Leonards trees were also fresher than their trees. read more

Is it true that a rolling stone gathers no moss? Not sure, but I just bought 3 rocks sporting lovely patches of green moss at Old Mill Nurseries for my garden. I love rustic organic stuff like this, a great mood lifter during these trying times. Not every nursery around here carries landscape rocks, other stores I tried before told me to just come in and check for myself. Much better customer service at Old Mill Nurseries, where a nursery manager (Neil) actually took the time to check stock while I waited on the phone. He also verified inventory of a few different plants I was looking for, and was honest about what was (or wasn't) in stock. This level of honesty/service is rare these days and for that reason alone I'll continue to visit Old Mill Nurseries for my gardening needs. They have a spacious outdoor area stocked with lots of interesting plants and trees, helpful polite employees observing proper COVID protocols, and reasonable pricing. Review for fall pruning. Hired old mill to plant trees and do fall upkeep on a home with extensive and diverse landscaping. I always have my regular landscapers do it and manage some myself. I am very impressed with the work that they did. They were knoweledgeable about all shurtbery and trees and did a very thourough job! I am someone who is very particular about my landscaping. I came for their July 4th sale based on an advert I saw online. The gentleman helping me informed me that the sale started tomorrow unless you were a contractor. I showed him the "incorrect" ad online and I asked him if he could honor it today. He left,inquired in the office, came back and agreed. I then continued to shop and filled up my wagon with $300+ goods. After shopping they refused to provide the discount. The manager came out with an attitude and was very rude. He Kept saying he couldn't make an exception. How about standing by information provided by your employees, as I continued to shop? Or a modicum Of customer service? If you want the sale price come back tomorrow. I informed him that as a first responder I would be working the next two days fighting covid. He offered me a whopping 10 percent with Id. As a long time customer I asked if he would reconsider since I wouldn't be returning. He couldn't care less. He suggested I leave and that I was making unreasonable demands. Purchased 6 yards of topsoil from Old Mill in the fall. Immediately found at least 60 or 70 thin shards or metal throughout the soil, each about 1/8: wide by 7" long. Then there were many small pieces of electrical wire, and many, many small pieces of glass, which I am still picking up out of my yard. And finally, I found that the actual soil eventually makes it way to the ground below, leaving an incredible amount or small pebbles throughout. Took several hours to blow the pebbles off with a leaf blower. If they sold this as land fill it would work well, but to call it topsoil is an absolute joke! Of course complained to them about the soil and their response was as I expected: "can't possibly be", and "nothing we can do about it!" Wish I could give them no stars. WILL NEVER GO BACK TO OLD MILL. read more

I want to give a review of Old Mill Nursery because I am so happy with the work they did at my house earlier this summer. They removed all of the old, outdated, overgrown shrubs across the front of my house and replaced them with the prefect landscape design for my little ranch. The owner, John, listened to what I had in mind and drew up the plans for me that reflected what I wanted and stayed within budget. The crew arrived on time and were professional. After the "demo" was done, John laid out the plants exactly how he wanted them planted, and he stopped back throughout the day to make sure everything was going according to plans. I also used his sprinkler service. Again very professional service. They didn't do any work that was unnecessary. And kept everything within budget. I needed about 7 cubic yards of black cedar mulch but I wanted it in bags to make it easier to distribute around my yard. I bought a bag from Home Depot and from Lowes to check the quality. Both were filled with various types of debris and garbage. There were old nails and other pieces of metal. In addition, both wanted to charge me about $100 for delivery. I went over to Old Mill Nursery, which is where I normally refill my propane tanks and asked them about their mulch. They offered real cedar mulch in 3 cubic foot bags. I ordered 60 bags and they delivered them for free. The quality of the mulch was outstanding. It had no foreign objects in it. My yard looks fantastic now. When you figure in the shipping and the inferior quality of the mulch from the large chain stores, paying a few extra dollars from Old Mill Nursery was well worth it. BEWARE! I contacted Old Mill for spring clean up and pruning. Owner (I think) came for an estimate and promised the world. Price seemed reasonable. Should have realized it was too good to be true. Old Mill RUINED nearly every plant, bush, and the entire aesthetic of my landscape. They hacked everything with a hedge trimmer. Everything is cut into square shapes. They have NO idea how to prune and their "best mulch" looks awful, like dirty hay. The owner was cold and dismissive. He said, "Well, there is nothing I can do. It will grow back." It will take YEARS to grow back. I wish I had checked Yelp before I called them. My experience is very similar to many of the other negative reviews I see here. On top of it all they are rude and treat customers terribly. I was going to do a minor electric add on and they wanted a deposit before they schedule me. "We've been selling trees for 30 years." That's the response I got from one worker and then again from the owner when I told them my $90 Christmas tree was dead. After I decorated the tree and filled the stand with water, it never absorbed any of it; Not one drop of water was absorbed by the tree. I noticed, while I was under the tree drilling holes in the trunk, 5 days of buying the tree, as per a worker at Old Mill, that the inside of the tree was almost completely bare. All I wanted was a new tree. I never asked for my money back. Both women I spoke to were rude and seemed very much not to care. This is the first time I've ever bought a tree that never drank water. It obviously wasn't cut when I bought it, or quite possibly, was already dying. Anyway, after going back and forth with Mary over the phone, and after telling her multiple times that I wasn't strapping an open tree to my car, she told me to bring in pictures and she will "see what she could do". This was after I was told on a previous phone conversation that I wouldn't have to return the dead tree by another employee. When I mentioned that, Mary told me "Well I don't know who would tell you that." Obviously, their word means nothing. She also never apologized at any time. Her tone was short and rude; almost as if she didn't believe a word I said. I never bought a tree from Old Mill nor will I ever go back or recommend them to anyone. The night I bought the tree the older man who helped wrap it told me it was cut only after the other worker who helped him looked to him for an answer. That was a little suspicious. He also seemed like I was making him work too hard and, God forbid, a minute past closing time. I should have followed my gut right then. Lesson learned. T'is the season. Go to Abby's Nursery in Wantagh like I should have done in the first place. The prices were a little higher this year but the trees are always fresh and the customer service is top notch. read more

Thankfully we were home when they installed our plants for they originally brought the cheaper plants we did not want and the rocks we ordered were no where in sight. When our honoki cypresses died and went into shocked the owner gave us an attitude and still has yet to replace them. Furthermore, they planted annuals which was not in our contract. This spring we were trying to get our entire backyard and front yard redone. Lots of work.. New plants, trees, bushes, flowers and big waterfall. Everything was pretty much already designed and drawn earlier by the mason company who did our patio work. We figured in order to get everything done by end of this spring, we should start shopping 6-9 months earlier. Which is plenty of time for any company to be completely ready for the job promised. Initially we got very reasonable quote through email from Diane who's the receptionist/secretary over there. We agreed with her and were told to call in early spring to get an on-site follow up inspection done to get all the details and unexpected things worked out and planned for. We called in beginning of April and that's when Mr. John showed up and everything went downhill from that point on. He looked at everything and gave us some additional ideas in which we were interested, said they can do entire job in 6 weeks time the most and the next step is to come by their place to show us our choices and to give us final quote. We went there in a week or two just to be totally shocked!! All the promised pricing from earlier email were jacked up by 30% and all the trees sizes lower by 1-2 feet?! We noticed that after getting back home and comparing their two quotes to each other. For another 2-3 weeks we tried getting a hold of John to have him revise the quote and honor his original pricing and to get the project starting. He was never available, either off that day we called or out sick. Not even once calling or emailing us, while Diane kept saying we can not deal with anyone else since he was our initial salesman and kept promising for his response. After wasting a full month my wife finally went back there to clarify what was really going on. Of course, she called before she went and was told John would be in that day. Yet again, he wasn't and they refused to help her. 3 more weeks went by, still no word from John AKA "liar" Of course by then we already knew they basically didn't want our business and didn't know how to get out of it. Since then we contracted other landscapers and had our beautiful landscape done within 3 weeks from initial contact for 35% lower cost. To sum it up, do your self a favor and spend your hard earned money elsewhere. Obviously, Old Mill Nurseries is only aimed at very wealthy costumers who don't really care how much they are spending and can be easily cheated and manipulated. read more

I found myself a little overwhelmed with yard work this year. I looked around for some professional help and decided to go with Old Mill Nurseries in Bellmore. I buy my Christmas tree there every year and have heard great things about their work (by the way...Christmas trees from there are great quality and priced right) So they came and in about 2 hours they did the work that would have taken me days. COULD NOT BE MORE UNHAPPY!! Me and my fiancé needed to have sod laid and the yard leveled out about 2 feet a simple enough job. Well unfortunately we decided to have old mill do the job, they came and did the leveling laid the sod and added a small retaining wall in the back from where the land was leveled off. At first it seemed like everything was fine but then after a few days of leaving the sod be and we could walk on it we noticed that even though the ground had been "leveled" there was nothing but dips and small mounds underneath the sod, after calling old mill about 4-5 times each time being assured they'd call back finally 2 weeks later someone called back and said they'd be out to look at it the next day. Well much to my surprise no one came to look at it so had to call 4-5 times again before my call was returned. Finally 2-3 weeks after my initial calls someone came out to look at the shoddy work, they assured me if they brought a roller to roll the sod out it would help. long story short they we played the phone tag game waiting for a response then someone would occasionally come look sometimes after someone would come roll it out. Now its a year later and if you walk across out back lawn theres a good chance you'll twist an ankle, on top of shoddy work old mill has terrible customer service please avoid them at all costs. hopefully there 2 stars on yelp will help steer people away read more

What a mess! My wife and I hired Old Mill Nursery last fall to remove the grass from our tiny front yard and install low crawling ground cover for what was supposed to be a maintenance-free front yard. The owner of Old Mill Nursery outlined his proposal (to plant Vinca) which he said would be effective in preventing weeds from growing. We also were assured by their plant expert that after Old Mill Nursery completed the job our yard would look beautiful with Vinca plants covering all the dirt and choking-out weed growth. But that's not what happened. With the onset of spring, our front yard has been completely overtaken with weeds and now looks like the front yard of an abandoned house. We called Old Mill Nursery asking them to correct the problem but were told by John the owner that he did what was required and that now it's a maintenance issue and that my wife and I will need to weed. Wait? What!? I can't help but feel that we were promised what it took to get our business. Or that Old Mill Nursery didn't fully think-through their plan. Received a quote for landscaping design and installation in July 2017. The design was just average and the pricing was astronomical. I do appreciate their professionalism throughout the process. Having discussed with a few neighbors that are customers, people do pay them what I considered a very premium price. I ballpark the quote for installation as almost double the RETAIL price of the plants. read more
