I'm almost 50 and live on the West Coast so for my summer sabbatical a stay and a meal was a dream come true and on it's 250th birthday too! The Stay : Check in was easy and the front desk staff gave my boyfriend and I a full folder of facts and information on what to do at the inn and beyond. We also secured reservations for dinner later. We had a lovely corner room on the third floor. The bed was high but comfortable and modernized in the sense that the AC unit worked well and so did the wifi. The bathroom was probably the weakest point - small and not great water pressure but hello you are in the oldest continuously run inn in the US. There are many charming nooks and crannies including adjacent sitting rooms and outdoor rocking chairs. The Meal : 7:30 Dinner reservation and we were seated right away in the back dining area where we were surrounded by images of boats and ships. It was busy but the service was prompt and attentive. The bread was warm and yummy. I had a delicious bowl of New England Clam Chowder and the grilled pork chop off the summer menu. It was so delicious and filling that even though I really wanted dessert , I couldn't fit any more. My boyfriend's prime rib was fall off the bone tender. When we left the tavern was full because it was Sea Shanty night! Cannot wait to make visiting an adult tradition.

When we arrived at the hostess station, she verified the reservation and immediately led us to a table in a small room off the main dining area and bar. The entire dining area is old wood -- floor, wall, ceiling -- and the room we were in had narrow floor-to-ceiling bookcases filled with hardcover books. I write this to demonstrate that all the decor served to dampen the sound despite nearly all tables being occupied. While you could hear the bustle and conversations around you, you could still have a conversation. Our server greeted us promptly and took a drink order. When he returned with our drinks, we ordered the clam chowder and braised short ribs for my wife and a wedge salad with the dry-rubbed pork chop for me. After entering our order, our server returned with a basket of warm dinner rolls and butter, then minutes later brought out our soup and salad. Both appetizers were terrific, and I think that may be one of the best blue cheese dressings I've had. Water glasses were refilled frequently without being asked and dishes were cleared by other waitstaff. We never wanted for anything, and none of the comings and goings were disruptive. This was a professional and competent team. Our entrees were served shortly after we finished our appetizers, and they were beautifully presented on the plates. My wife loved her short ribs, which she said melted in her mouth. Until this meal, I've yet to find pork chops to surpass the ones I make at home, but this was truly exceptional! While the mango salsa topping the chop was nice, it was completely unnecessary as the chop was well seasoned and juicy. We capped off the meal with desserts, a chocolate mousse pie for my wife, a warm butter caramel cake with berry compote for me. Delicious! We'll be back to this gem of a place!

Completely Unacceptable -- Serious Cleanliness Concerns…read more We stayed at the Quality Inn at 100 Essex Rd. in Old Saybrook on August 12 and ended up leaving shortly after checking in because of the condition of our room. GPS brought us in through the back of the property which was very rundown. We overlooked that and continued to the front, which was a bit better. Once inside, we noticed that the hallways had stained walls and carpets along with a persistent musty smell. When we reached our third-floor room, the problems became much more serious. We had specifically booked a room with a hot tub because I had recently pulled a muscle in my back and wanted to relax. Upon entering, we discovered that the light switch itself was missing, leaving a small metal piece protruding from the wall that had to be used to turn on the light. There was also quite a bit of dust behind the door which immediately suggested they hadn't cleaned that area in a while. The hot tub was in terrible condition. The surface was chipped, the jets were visibly grimy with scum, and then we discovered a used condom lying next to the hot tub faucet. The receptionist said the room had been cleaned, but the condom was probably overlooked. I cannot understand how anyone could have properly cleaned and sanitized the hot tub without noticing a used condom beside the faucet. This immediately made us question the cleanliness of the entire room. It was already 9 PM, but we did not feel comfortable staying there or simply switching rooms when the same housekeeping standards would presumably apply. We requested a refund, took our luggage, and had to scramble to find another hotel. We live two hours away and already had tickets and plans in the area for the following morning. Thankfully, a hotel in Essex had a last-minute cancellation. The manager contacted me the next day and offered a discount on a future stay. I appreciate that he reached out, but after this experience, we obviously declined. We can overlook an older building, dated décor, or minor cosmetic problems. We cannot overlook basic sanitation and safety. A missing light switch, significant dust, stained and musty hallways, a dirty hot tub, and especially a used condom left beside it are completely unacceptable. A hotel room does not need to be luxurious, but it absolutely needs to be safe, sanitary, and properly cleaned before the next guest is given the key. Unfortunately, our room did not meet that basic standard and I cannot recommend this hotel.

I've been in hotels that charged less that were cleaner and offered better amenities. The listing said there was a pool. However, it was closed for the season. In August. I could understand if it was temporarily closed for cleaning but if the pool was not available at all it should not have been included in the listing. The listing also promised a breakfast but there was only one option (hope you like waffles). Other budget hotels would at least offer bagels or fruit. The room did not have a sheer curtain, only a blackout. If I wanted to bring in any sunlight, I was fully visible to people in the parking lot. So, you either have light or privacy, not both. There were other minor issues like ratty curtains and blankets. It would cost you nothing to make sure that the alarm clocks were set to the right time. For a second, I thought I was late to my best friend's wedding. I will say that the staff were polite and helpful. I don't want this review to reflect poorly on them. I know "econo" is in the name and that I should expect a cheap hotel in both senses of the word. However, it wasn't all that "cheap" in terms of price and could have been much better with just a bit more effort and management.

But you would think a hospitality business would have some hospitality and respect for it's customers. Not here. My boyfriend and I had no complaints about our room. They arrived to check in and the owner suggested they take the room with two twin beds, so they'd be more comfortable. They both looked at the woman like she was crazy and said they'd like the room they paid for, not a twin room. She gave them a key and when they went to the room, it had two beds. They were livid when they went back to the check in desk and demanded that they get the room that they requested. The woman begrudgingly gave them a key. Couple #2 (asthmatic woman and man): They requested a nonsmoking room with a queen bed. When they arrived, the owner said she could smell smoke on them so she put them in a smoking room. My friend literally screamed at the woman because she had heard of what happened with our other friends and was already upset by the time she got to the desk. The woman put them in a nonsmoking room after the yelling, but the room had mold on the walls and there was purple goo running from the pipes under the sink. The last straw came at check-out. It was at 10 am and we came into the office to return our key. A man came out IN HIS BOXERS and checked us out of the rooms. He stood in the office for about 5 minutes while he did the computer work to check us out. I finally ended up calling and demanding a refund because it was such a horrible experience. I was able to get one and I really let them have it on the phone (which is totally not my style but I was outraged by how we were treated there) DO NOT STAY HERE. Seriously.
