Fire pit in front of entrance.

Nice outside image....Went we got to the desk a few people passed by, saying...someone will be with you in a minute.... The room (#4) was big....when we walked in....the smell of disinfectant cleaning products was SO Strong....I had to immediately open all window....it was too much. The carpet, even though it was vacuumed...it looked kind of worn and old..... The fireplace worked, but the flames were miniscule.... They were barely 2 inches tall..... Overall OK....

Spacious family style dinner and plenty of room for the band

This is a lovely inn. There is a terrific jazz band that performs during Sunday brunch.

The Griswold Inn is an iconic stop if you're in Connecticut…read more Not only is it full of history, it has the absolute best Christmas vibes (complete with carolers who travel from table to table) The food is really good - with a good variety of options including some very unique options. Everything we had we loved! Drinks were delicious, and spot on. Because of the season, it was really busy, and our waiter seemed a bit overwhelmed. We ordered wine for our meals, and it didn't come until after we finished eating. Understandable with the season, but did feel a little hard to get something if we needed it! Overall I'd recommend going because it's worth the fun Christmas vibes.

Unfortunately, most of nearly every aspect of our experience was disappointing: *While we were expecting a small, quaint room (which we certainly got), we were not expecting the walls to be paper thin and the heating system to be ineffective. We were located in the inn itself, and you could hear folks on the stairway, going into their rooms, etc. The heating in our room was really wonky--75 degrees and it felt icy cold. For $300 a night?? *The Thanksgiving buffet was OK. We tried to get drinks at the bar beforehand and had to wait a long time because the ONE woman behind the bar decided to hate us from the onset and serve every single person there before grudgingly turning to us. As for the food, there were some hits and misses. We appreciated that there were some salads available, and while the stuffing was bone dry, it tasted pretty good. There were some other roasted veggies and mashed potatoes, and we did like the turkey. Dessert, however, was disgusting. It was either defrosted Betty Crocker or from an Aramark catalogue, but absolutely nothing was homemade. *The reason why we're especially pissed at the place was the "continental breakfast" included in the cost of the room. LOL! A couple Chobani yogurts, stale Aramark pastries, and not-even fresh hard boiled eggs that were so defrosted that they actually squirted water when you sliced into them. Disgusting. What a joke. Better just to serve coffee than what they had. How embarrassing for America's oldest "continuously-running" inn, a moniker that they are so proud to boast of. Listen, this place is adorable and the dining spaces are cozy and the staff (other than the bar) is extremely kind. Essex also couldn't be more cute and we definitely want to be back here again in the warmer months, but we would actually prefer to stay at a Courtyard Marriott and get the points because it would be far less money and--we can't believe we're saying this--better quality. Maybe we'd come back for the regular menu at the restaurant, but overall, it's three stars.

The scallops were very small, obviously not fresh and rubbery. They were served with boiled potatoes which were sprinkled with parsley and no other seasoning at all. The worst though was the "chef's choice of vegetable": FROZEN green beans. To charge $39 for this pitiful dinner is basically a crime. We told our waiter that we were disappointed for the above reasons and he mumbled that he would tell the chef. Obviously not the first such complaint he received. This place used to be one of the best places in Connecticut. Gonna miss it, cause we aren't going back.

I've been in hotels that charged less that were cleaner and offered better amenities. The listing said there was a pool. However, it was closed for the season. In August. I could understand if it was temporarily closed for cleaning but if the pool was not available at all it should not have been included in the listing. The listing also promised a breakfast but there was only one option (hope you like waffles). Other budget hotels would at least offer bagels or fruit. The room did not have a sheer curtain, only a blackout. If I wanted to bring in any sunlight, I was fully visible to people in the parking lot. So, you either have light or privacy, not both. There were other minor issues like ratty curtains and blankets. It would cost you nothing to make sure that the alarm clocks were set to the right time. For a second, I thought I was late to my best friend's wedding. I will say that the staff were polite and helpful. I don't want this review to reflect poorly on them. I know "econo" is in the name and that I should expect a cheap hotel in both senses of the word. However, it wasn't all that "cheap" in terms of price and could have been much better with just a bit more effort and management.

We were happy to see that this remains a nice place to stay - the hotel was clean, the staff was welcoming, the grounds were lovely & the parking lot is spacious. The pillows are very comfortable! There is a great Mexican restaurant next door! I would definitely stay here again!

But you would think a hospitality business would have some hospitality and respect for it's customers. Not here. My boyfriend and I had no complaints about our room. We were traveling with friends and they were their experiences made me irate. Couple #1 (both men): They requested one room with a king sized bed. They arrived to check in and the owner suggested they take the room with two twin beds, so they'd be more comfortable. They both looked at the woman like she was crazy and said they'd like the room they paid for, not a twin room. She gave them a key and when they went to the room, it had two beds. They were livid when they went back to the check in desk and demanded that they get the room that they requested. The woman begrudgingly gave them a key. Couple #2 (asthmatic woman and man): They requested a nonsmoking room with a queen bed. When they arrived, the owner said she could smell smoke on them so she put them in a smoking room. My friend literally screamed at the woman because she had heard of what happened with our other friends and was already upset by the time she got to the desk. The woman put them in a nonsmoking room after the yelling, but the room had mold on the walls and there was purple goo running from the pipes under the sink. The last straw came at check-out. It was at 10 am and we came into the office to return our key. A man came out IN HIS BOXERS and checked us out of the rooms. He stood in the office for about 5 minutes while he did the computer work to check us out. I finally ended up calling and demanding a refund because it was such a horrible experience. I was able to get one and I really let them have it on the phone (which is totally not my style but I was outraged by how we were treated there) DO NOT STAY HERE. Seriously. They are rude, inappropriate, and clearly not fit to run a hotel. I vowed to myself I will never stay at a hotel that shares a logo with White Castle ever again...

It stunk like cigarettes and even had burned holes from cigarettes in the sheets, and sheets weren't even that clean. If it wasn't so cold outside I would've rather slept in the car or on the street. I suggest no one stay at this place unless you want to catch something.
