Major hidden gem in the Hartselle area! 4.5/5. I made the drive over after working in Decatur just to try Old Havana Cafe. It's in a sort of nondescript shopping mall. As other reviewers have mentioned, this is a carryout only establishment. However, they do have a few chairs and a comfy loveseat to sit on while you wait for your order. I didn't order ahead but I was able to place my order at the counter. The menu online is more extensive than the menu on the board behind the register, so I'm not certain of what all is usually available. I wound up ordering a Cubano and a guava and cream cheese pastry. The man who came out to take my order and delivered it to me when it was finished was unbelievably warm and welcoming. He had such a calm and gentle demeanor and made me feel right at home. Definitely a highlight. My food took a few minutes to come out but overall was well within a reasonable time to wait; it was very hot and fresh. It was wrapped nicely and delivered to my waiting hands. I took it out to the car to eat. The cuban sandwich was quite good. Symphony of mustard, savory and slightly sweet ham, and sour pickles. Really good flavors, and piled high between the bread. My one small complaint is that previously the bread I've had on really good Cuban sandwiches has been a bit crispier than this particular one; it was a little more chewy than I've had in the past. Very very minor though, and more a preference than anything I suppose. That guava and cream cheese pastry, though....whewwwwww. It was my first time having a freshly fried one and oh my GOODNESS it was delicious. The guava was sticky and syrupy sweet, balanced by the creamy and dense cream cheese. The pastry was scalding hot and delightfully flaky. It was too rich to eat in one sitting, but so completely delightful. Although it's certainly a drive for me in normal circumstances, I'll happily return when in the area. Promising, however completely killed our event vibe by being late with the delivery. I mean yes - it's all good supporting a small business but when the small business can't handle big business it's a problem. Food on our catering was very disappointing too. It's like they got scared and forgot how to cook. The steak sandwich had the same filling as the beef empanadas. I mean come on - we ain't Cuban n all but we know when we are getting skimmed. I went down to Hartselle to visit friends and stopped by this place on the way back because I LOVE Cuban food. I grew up in south Florida and fondly recalled eating pressed Cubans growing up. I've been chasing that high ever since! Usually I'm left disappointed, but this Cuban was very good and extremely delicious. Not perfect, but maybe memory is better than real life at this point haha. The empinada was also delicious. Staff was friendly. I ate both on the hood if my car in the parking lot because I'm a savage and they sadly don't have dine in seating. I got the sandwich, fries, and Chorizo Croquetas. She apologized for taking a few minutes longer.... Guys we ordered close to close and she made the Chorizo Croquetas for us FROM SCRATCH so that we had our Croquetas. They were so kind and very warm people and it smelled amazing in there. Food was awesome too, could be just hungry but it is some of the best sandwiches I've had. They didnt know it was our first time there and experience was great. This tiny spot has been recommended to me a few times, to be honest the first time I drove right by and missed it. The smells as I walked through the door, told me I'd found a new favorite. The owner greeted me warmly and walked me through the menu and some off menu items too. It's going to take me a week to try it all but today I had three Arepas, one chorizo, one beef and one beef with plantain. Boom, damn that was fire. Going back tomorrow for the mojo pork and some tamales and some flan. Go here, eat here. This is the best restaurant in Hartselle and possibly all of Morgan county!! I have now eaten here three times this week. I haven't had everything on the menu but I'm getting close, not one bad bite. The steak sandwich is delicious! I was so excited to find the Old Havana Cafe! Let's face it, there aren't many Cuban venues in north Alabama. I found it by chance online. As an early birthday present to myself, I decided to make the 35 mile drive from Arab to Hartselle. This is not a sit-down restaurant, but works with call-in orders & carry-out. That was perfectly fine. I went inside and the owner was super friendly. I placed an order for a traditional Cuban sandwich and their Chick sandwich. I also ordered a couple of empanadas, one ham & cheese and one beef. The owner & his wife were so kind. She had made a large pot of black beans & rice with bacon. They gave me a generous bowl to sample for free. The beans & rice were a nice compliment to their scrumptious sandwiches! My husband ate the Cuban sandwich and said it was delicious! Their Chick sand was amazing! The chicken was well-seasoned and so flavorful. Not dried out, like so many chicken sandwiches are these days. My husband and I both sampled the empanadas. The ham & cheese was good, but the beef would melt in your mouth! Just the right amount of spices. They also offer Cuban-style coffee selections, if you are into coffee. Delicious! Were the first words my wife and I both exclaimed. She had the Cuban and I ordered the Chick based upon my server's recommendation. The Cuban reportedly was rhe "best one ever" and my sammich was exactly as described: breaded chicken with a mildly warming spice, reasonable amount of tomato, lettuce. We splurged and got their last two pieces of flan, which in the end was way more than two humans could eat. But it was beautiful. Home made, smooth and creamy with a very light caramel base. Excellent food and great service. Owners are very nice and friendly. Its counter service style. Coffee: So nice to find quality Cuban coffee, Cafe bustelo in a good quality espresso machine. My wife had a version with sugar and milk, I had mine black and bitter. Solid! Beef Empanadas: This is a must order! Big, fat, stuffed with a blend of seasoned ground beef (looked like some onions and peppers in the meat). The dough was crispy on the outside, almost flakey but just quality empanada dough. It held together while eating it, and I added hot sauce which makes it perfect for me. I also ordered one of the specials which I'll eat for breakfast. You can easily reheat these in an air fryer and they'll probably taste just as good. Piggy Sandwich: This will be a regular sandwich for me, it hit all the right buttons. The seasoned pork really stands out, lots of flavor the meat was tender and juicy and mixed really well with the caramelized onions. I added pickles and they really tied the whole thing together. Think Cuban but better because it has all the flavors but no ham (I've personally never been a fan of hot ham). 5 stars all the way! read more

Old Havana is a "hole in the wall" that you simply have to visit. Everything is to-go, and food is fixed while you wait, so a good 10 minute wait isn't uncommon, but the food here is easily worth it. The sandwiches are delicious and have incredibly pleasing texture (partially thanks to their house made bread) and the meat is seasoned to the point of enjoyment without it becoming overpowering. The flan, if you are lucky enough to get one before they are sold out for the day, are fantastic. Lastly, worth note, there isn't anywhere else around that you can get a Cuban coffee, so make sure to get one before you leave. read more

You MUST come here!! I grew up in Miami and had access to wonderful Cuban food. I have missed it so much moving to Alabama! I happened on this sweet hole-in-the-wall and fell in love instantly! The food is authentic Cuban and wonderful. I've had everything on the menu now and everything is wonderful.
