We went this evening to the Old Firehall Confectionary in Unionville .... It was Xmas time and it's such a good time to go here.... The place has a ton of yummy goods from truffles, chocolate bark, cupcakes, cookies and chocolate covered goods..... They have ice cream and gelato..... But during Xmas they have Belgian hot chocolate which is sooooo good It's hot chocolate made with Belgian chocolate.... It's definitely much more on the thicker side.... Tonight we enjoyed some hot chocolates there..... I had the Dirty hot chocolate....which has a shot of espresso in it My wife had the Nutella hot chocolate.... Both were super good..... We shared a chocolate chip cookie..... The server warmed it up for us making it nice and gooey The items are on the pricier side but the quality is good .... I used to frequent this place a lot back in my high school days. Glad to see it's still serving up desserts and sweets and still has a line out the door. I'd be remiss if I said the prices haven't gone WAY up (maybe overcompensating a lil TOO much for inflation). The scoops are definitely not as generously sized anymore. They also stopped serving one of my fave flavours from back in the day, raspberry thunder (sniff sniff* sad face*). Nevertheless, the Kawartha ice cream they serve is really good quality stuff. From 2009-2015, I would've awarded firehall 5 stars. In it's current state, I think 4 stars is fitting. The nostalgia is inevitable and it's still one of the only local places I can find belgian dipped ice cream. They also have the most selection on TYPE of dip too. The other great thing is that you can get belgian dip on your ice cream inside a cup too (not just inside a cone) which is awesome. I stopped by with my gf recently after dinner and we had a cute little date. Her moose tracks ice cream was a lil too soft. I ordered cookies n cream flavour with a nice 70% choco dip hard shell (the combo didn't really work well together but I still loved it; would've been better with mocha almond fudge prolly). P.S. An extra star for the nostalgia and ambiance of an icecream parlor located in a old firehouse in a great location. One half is set up for chocolates and baked goods, while the other half is for icecream. The icecream line is long at times, but it moves quickly as the staff are well versed in getting people through. I would recommend getting your treat and walking down to the park for a seat, as there is always a gaggle of people right outside. We came recently and got three scoops of different icecream. I like that they carry Kawartha icecream exclusively, so it is wonderfully creamy and delicious. A single scoop is generous, which is enough for two people as a light treat. This is a candy shop, and as such you have to expect to pay far more than you would if you just went into Walmart. But part of it is the experience, and the location. They have very reasonably priced fudge. My only concern is that the maple fudge was far too sweet for what I was looking for, although that's more of a me problem than a them problem. They were really good with COVID guidelines - everyone was lining up and there was a 5 person limit there which was great. Tons of candies, teas, etc. to browse through. Wish I took the time to properly look at everything but alas we are in a pandemic and we can only be there for so long without people impatiently waiting for us to leave. We had the pistachio and lavender blueberry flavoured ice creams. Pistachio had a really nice aftertaste - you can tell they've used proper pistachio flavouring. The caramel had a nice balance because of the salt. I also liked how the inside was stuffed. I did notice however that this cupcake was more crumbly than the others and needed to be eaten with a spoon because it crumbled everywhere. Unionville Main Street is always a fun place to walk around (especially when it's doggo friendly!) The old fireball confectionery used to be an old fire station back in the day and now turned into an ice cream / desserts / chocolate place. Our go-tos are chocolate flavoured anything (haha) we also tried their fruit flavoured ice creams before which was really refreshing especially during the summer time! One of the hidden gems to enjoy. The cutest shops with edible chocolates. Stopped in summer of 2020. Its usually a lien up and if you go during the right time like the classic cars or when its karaoke time, its certainly a nice way to pass time. This location has soft serve and kwartha ice cream. If you never had kwartha, it's the best stuff. It's not aerated like Chapman, it's not lower fat content either. It's a full fat content, so the moment you eat it. You get hit with the flavors, the cream melting and a fullness afterwards. Kwartha goes for $6 a tub, but if you just want the one serve treat it's no crime. My favourite is the mango. read more

Before you even step in, you can already smell the heartwarming aroma of the plethora of baked goods and endless amount of ice-cream flavours. The feeling intensifies when you step inside. It truly is a magical feeling. The interior design has a very cozy feeling to it and there are picnic tables so you can enjoy your treats with friends. You're also surrounded by their magnificent candy bar and a selection of refrigerated drinks, cakes (to take on the go), and more. It's extremely colourful and I believe anybody could enjoy their time here! I usually come here to enjoy their amazing ice cream, whether it's scoops of their various flavours or their amazing soft serve frozen yogurt. I've never tried their baked goods before, but my friend and I decided to give them a try and surprise our friend for his birthday with the candles. Note, the desserts at this place are a little pricier than others but you get what you pay for and they're truly one-of-a-kind. I got the chocolate cupcake and my friend got the tiramisu. Visited Main Street Unionville and came across this firehall with a huge line going out the door. Friend said it was one of the best ice cream places in the area (there are several, including a baskin robbins). So we got in line and waited about 10 minutes before getting to the front. On the left is the counter for ice cream. On the right, they have a number of sweets. And more stuff in the back. As you approach the ice cream counter, one of the pillars has the menu attached to it if you want to plan out your game. I wanted to get a dark chocolate flavour called "Death By Chocolate" along with a mocha flavour, but the death chocolate was already sold out. Must be really popular! Ended up getting a mix of mocha and mint. The ice cream is very creamy, and the flavour is spot on. The portion size is not bad either. There are a couple benches in the back to sit and enjoy your meal. No washrooms however. Would definitely recommend dropping by if you're in the area. read more

Stopped by this afternoon in the mood for some flavor-burst soft serve but was very disappointed to find out that they no longer offer it! Instead, the company has come out with a new line of chocolate dips (which seems to be the trend nowadays). I wasn't too sure what to get but opted for a matcha green tea dip. Presentation did not turn out the best but it's all about the taste right? Well, the matcha flavor was definitely there and quite strong, so much so that you could get hints of its bitter nature ever so slightly. However, because matcha dips are always made with white chocolate, it was quite sweet... Too sweet, if you plan to consume the whole cone/cup alone. Nonetheless, this was tasty and worth a try! What an excellent way to start a Canada trip! We were dropped off so we could see Unionville for a few hours, and after speaking with a bartender in our restaurant, she said that we should stop by Old Firehall if we had any time, and wow, it was worth it! Incredible assortment of home-made ice creams, with different styles of cones and cone dressings like caramel, and an absolutely devilish fudge bar. I could feel the pounds coming into my body just by looking at most of the stuff from how good it was. We ended up getting mainly ice cream, but it's some of the tastiest ice cream I've had in a long time. The structure seems to be based out of an older fire department building and the brick just adds an element of home to it. This place has been a mainstay for such a long time because of convenience and nostalgia. Other than Flavours of Unionville there isn't any other ice cream place. (Not counting DQ - HCafe is trying.) Definitely a core part of Main street unionville and honestly... it's a bit of a tourist trap. But you could say that for a lot of the stores around here. I don't recall one scoop of ice cream plus a waffle cone being nearly $7 including tax. That is highway robbery for ice cream that isn't even made in house - it's Kawartha dairy. A pint of Haagen Dazs on sale seems more worth it at this point ($5) or driving a bit further to Kawartha dairy itself. I understand costs have gone up... this is an issue that the whole of Main street has. Excellent location and character, not much action on how to adapt and innovate while retaining that classic character. Chocolates are good but expensive at just over 2 dollars. I mostly see people come here for ice cream not the chocolate or cakes (which I've had - not particularly memorable). The lines used to be incredible but have lessened I think because of the price increase - seeing more people at Flavours now. read more

Rating is mainly for their soft serve, 3.5. I used to come here quite a bit as the soft serve is super creamy and rich in, well, cream flavour, if you know what I mean. I have to say though, perhaps it's because there's so many soft serves around that Old Firehall is not necessarily my favorite anymore, as it can get a little too rich for my liking, but it's always a go to when I'm in Unionville Main St. and want to grab a cone. I love the flavours you can get with the soft serve, and how it's just added on the rim of the ice cream yet you can still taste the flavour (my fav is green apple). That being said, you can also get a dipped soft serve which many people go for. The thing with their soft serve is that depending on who makes your ice cream, the amount you get may vary. That being said, I have had their cupcakes once but it was definitely a miss for me, a little dry and not that flavourful. I got the red velvet, which is my usual go to for cakes, but it definitely did not deliver. Maybe I would try again and even try their chocolates and confectionaries next time. We came here after a nice stroll around the neighbourhood for a nice treat. This place is always packed with people, and especially yesterday with weather of 40+ celsius (including humidex). As we walked in, we saw all the yummy treats and the giant line up for ice cream. Anyhow, we decided to get chocolate instead and she chose an Earl Grey truffle. This was WOW!! Though inflation is a thing and 5 cent bags of candy don't exist anymore, you still get that old time feel and childish sense of wonder here at Old Firehall Confectionery. For those of us that aren't kids anymore, it's still a fun place with a gourmet twist: delicate macarons, decorated pastries, and painted truffles. Though I love coming here just to take a look around and smell things, I like to treat myself once in awhile to some of their delicious desserts. Ice cream: They serve big, tasty soft-serve ice cream cones here. The blueberry dip is bright blue and slightly tart, a perfect balance with the sweet ice cream. I tried the butterscotch dip before and wasn't a fan of that one though. They also have dippin' dots, which are always a fun twist to eating ice cream the traditional way. Macarons: I love their macarons. They've got great texture and the flavours are very distinct. Sometimes I buy myself a box of six to savour and then immediately feel guilty for eating all of them in one sitting... Pastries: This place tempts me every time with their beautiful pastries. So far, I've only tried one: a strawberry tart. It was flaky and fruity, with just the right amount of sweetness. I'm definitely going to try more of these. Truffles: Bright, colourful, gorgeous to see placed in rows behind the counter. Taste-wise though, I think they were pretty ordinary. They would make great gifts but I don't tend to buy these very often for myself. Sadly, Main Street Unionville is losing bits and pieces of its traditional feel, something that made it truly special. I saw a sign for the opening of a Chinese bubble tea/dessert/whatever place right in the middle...and they already have a Real Fruit on one end and a Chinese escape room on the other. I've always come here whenever I'm in the area - for a quick refresher of ice-cream. There is stone-slab or soft serve to choose from. The one I tried in this picture is the stone-slab Black Raspberry Thunder flavor. I ordered a small and the quantity was way over than expectation - so it's awesome to share if you are with family/friends. The ice-cream is jammed packed with flavor and richness. They don't actually make the ice-cream in front of you, as I assume they are pre-made and scoped out of a jug. You can add additional toppings (sprinkles, chocolate chips, etc.) and change it up to a regular cone/waffle cone or cup. Flavors here are pretty consistent in quality and quantity - I would wish they can either offer season flavors or introduce new ones to spice it up. Other than that, it's a go to place when you're in Main Street. It's the perfect thing in the summer when you stroll around the neighbourhood. I reminisce of the days I hung out here under the beating summer heat. Going here is always a treat (pardon), and recently I've had the pleasure to share this experience with some out-of-town friends. It's nice to see that the staff are executing full sanitary measures. They are very friendly and patient with your orders. My go-to is their ice cream (usually mint chip); it's really creamy since it's from Kawartha Dairy. You can also get macarons, candy apples, fudge, cupcakes, pastries, and plenty more. As you can tell from the tone of my writing, I have begun drooling just thinking about the options. I should also remark that the place is indeed the site of a former fire hall, brick-laden and all. As a result, this contributes more to the wondrous feeling when you visit. I implore you to come. Located in the center of Main Street Unionville, this has definitely been the place I'll always visit when we are in the neighborhood. It's great for people of all ages that love sweets! When you walk in you do smell the yummy sugary scent that is coming out of the store. They offered a variety of sweets such as ice-cream, coated apples, a variety of chocolate and candies. My family and I visited the Old Firehall for dessert on April 20th at 7:20pm. While the ice cream was good, the service was atrocious. We were the only ones in line and the lady behind the ice cream counter didn't acknowledge us, wouldn't answer our questions, then proceeded to get 2 out of the 3 orders wrong - we asked for a double scoops, she served singles - when we pointed it out, she berated us for not telling her sooner (we did) and then openly complained that we were asking her to fix the order. When we asked for napkins, she pretended not to hear and turned to talk to her co-worker instead. I got the ice cream sandwich to celebrate international ice cream sandwich day LOL with my best friend. It was super busy on a Friday night so expect a lineup! The ice cream was so bomb!!!
