Lots of history here, very clean and a person making the very chocolates u eat. Lots of options even with ice cream. Enough people working to not keep Long lines coffee can be warm, cold or extra hot too. This hazelnut coffee was perfect no need for sugar. The chocolates were perfectly decadent. Has limited seating inside and only 2 tables out front.
I used to frequent this place a lot back in my high school days. Glad to see it's still serving up desserts and sweets and still has a line out the door. I'd be remiss if I said the prices haven't gone WAY up (maybe overcompensating a lil TOO much for inflation). The scoops are definitely not as generously sized anymore. They also stopped serving one of my fave flavours from back in the day, raspberry thunder (sniff sniff* sad face*). Nevertheless, the Kawartha ice cream they serve is really good quality stuff. From 2009-2015, I would've awarded firehall 5 stars. In it's current state, I think 4 stars is fitting. The nostalgia is inevitable and it's still one of the only local places I can find belgian dipped ice cream. They also have the most selection on TYPE of dip too. The other great thing is that you can get belgian dip on your ice cream inside a cup too (not just inside a cone) which is awesome. I stopped by with my gf recently after dinner and we had a cute little date. Her moose tracks ice cream was a lil too soft. I ordered cookies n cream flavour with a nice 70% choco dip hard shell (the combo didn't really work well together but I still loved it; would've been better with mocha almond fudge prolly). P.S. We also tried some of the ready-made pastries (across from the dairy bar) and they tended to be too sweet for our collective palates.
Heat wave today. The ice cream melts right away once you step outside the shop. As always, my favourite ice cream shop every summer. Today, they run out of cookies and cream so tried pistachio and strawberry cheesecake. I love the pistachio.
Hands down one of the best ice cream I ever had, I had the coffee ice cream, the staff was very attentive gave exemplary service, the inside ambiance is old school looking, I got the mocha ice cream so creamy amazing texture, on a waffle cone, I've been here once before but I got the wrong flavour so I gave this place another chance, boy I was not disappointed, the ice cream had insane coffee flavour and if you want they can make a shake as well, this place is a staple for ice cream and Markham and is a go to must if you come to Markham
An extra star for the nostalgia and ambiance of an icecream parlor located in a old firehouse in a great location. One half is set up for chocolates and baked goods, while the other half is for icecream. The icecream line is long at times, but it moves quickly as the staff are well versed in getting people through. I would recommend getting your treat and walking down to the park for a seat, as there is always a gaggle of people right outside. We came recently and got three scoops of different icecream. I like that they carry Kawartha icecream exclusively, so it is wonderfully creamy and delicious. A single scoop is generous, which is enough for two people as a light treat. The price of three scoops can probably get you a tub of Kawartha icecream in the store, but it is nice to be able to walk around Unionville with a cold treat on a summer day.
This cute and charming Confectionery Shop is located in an old historic Firehall on Main Street Unionville. The Soft Serve Ice Cream dipped with Chocolate Ferraro Rocher. The ice cream is super smooth and creamy. The chocolate dip is milky and smooth with crunchy bits of Ferraro Rocher and nuts. This is so delicious!! You will find lots of choices in this Confectionery Shop. From handmade truffles and candies, with fudge on a stick, kawartha ice cream, specialty popcorn, and so much more! Do come visit this place!
Cute and charming ice cream and confectionary shop in Unionville. I've been to Unionville a few times but this was my first time trying something from Old Firehall. They were really good with COVID guidelines - everyone was lining up and there was a 5 person limit there which was great. Tons of candies, teas, etc. to browse through. Wish I took the time to properly look at everything but alas we are in a pandemic and we can only be there for so long without people impatiently waiting for us to leave. We had the pistachio and lavender blueberry flavoured ice creams. Pistachio had a really nice aftertaste - you can tell they've used proper pistachio flavouring. Lavender blueberry was the perfect blend of lavender and blueberry - it was perfectly 50% lavender, 50% blueberry. Everyone who has ever visited Unionville should definitely pay a visit to Old Firehall for some proper ice cream!
Birthday cake cupcake: the vanilla cake was delicious and what you would expect. The butter cream icing was also delicious and went well with the vanilla cake Peanut butter cupcake: I had higher hopes for this. Only the icing had peanut butter flavour to it which was nice. The chocolate cupcake itself was ok - the flavour to the vegan cupcake was actually better My sister ordered via Uber eats and sent it to my house for my birthday. I live in Milton which is strange because I couldn't find a location in Milton so in assuming it is from Unionville so am making the review here. Salted caramel cupcake: this was a great cupcake. The caramel had a nice balance because of the salt. I also liked how the inside was stuffed. I did notice however that this cupcake was more crumbly than the others and needed to be eaten with a spoon because it crumbled everywhere. Vegan chocolate cupcake: the first taste was a bit odd but then I realized it was due to the bitterness is the cocoa powder. This was actually the best cupcake for the 4. The cupcake was fudgy and moist. The only thing is the icing was a bit oily, not sure what vega. Ingredient they used to make this
They recently (or maybe not), got soft serve! So I tried it out and it was delicious. Grabbed a Skor cone with a vanilla soft serve, dipped in Oreo. Very decadent. I would probably not do that again as it's ALOT. But for the sweet tooths, you should definitely give it a try. It's a bit pricey, but quality is there. I think the cone itself is perfect to share with someone. Quick and easy to grab your ice cream - line may be long at times but it's consistently moving. Unionville has become very busy and packed even on weekday evenings. Parking in the big lot at the end of the road to the right is coming/going. At least it's free!
Oh, geez, I put on weight just by walking through here. The sights and smells are so tempting and fattening. Arrrghhh! I took some foodie friends there and they bought a bunch of stuff to take back to Florida. I'm not sure how many of the treats survived the trip. I gave in to temptation and had a cappucino. It was okay, nothing fancy. I've indulged in other treats in the past so I know how good they are but my waistline can't afford it. Sad.
If you're ever looking for a sweet summertime treat in Markham (or any time to be honest), the Old Firehall Confectionary is a classic spot. Located in the beautiful neighbourhood of Unionville, this dessert shop is always bursting with eager customers in a long line out the doorway. Before you even step in, you can already smell the heartwarming aroma of the plethora of baked goods and endless amount of ice-cream flavours. The feeling intensifies when you step inside. It truly is a magical feeling. The interior design has a very cozy feeling to it and there are picnic tables so you can enjoy your treats with friends. You're also surrounded by their magnificent candy bar and a selection of refrigerated drinks, cakes (to take on the go), and more. It's extremely colourful and I believe anybody could enjoy their time here! I usually come here to enjoy their amazing ice cream, whether it's scoops of their various flavours or their amazing soft serve frozen yogurt. I've never tried their baked goods before, but my friend and I decided to give them a try and surprise our friend for his birthday with the candles. Note, the desserts at this place are a little pricier than others but you get what you pay for and they're truly one-of-a-kind. I got the chocolate cupcake and my friend got the tiramisu. Both were extremely decadent and rich. You're definitely gonna be full after one of these. I give Old Firehall Confectionary 5 stars because it never fails to amaze me and whoever I come with. Whenever I have family or friends come out of town, I like to bring them here.
Visited Main Street Unionville and came across this firehall with a huge line going out the door. Friend said it was one of the best ice cream places in the area (there are several, including a baskin robbins). So we got in line and waited about 10 minutes before getting to the front. On the left is the counter for ice cream. On the right, they have a number of sweets. And more stuff in the back. As you approach the ice cream counter, one of the pillars has the menu attached to it if you want to plan out your game. I wanted to get a dark chocolate flavour called "Death By Chocolate" along with a mocha flavour, but the death chocolate was already sold out. Must be really popular! Ended up getting a mix of mocha and mint. The ice cream is very creamy, and the flavour is spot on. The portion size is not bad either. There are a couple benches in the back to sit and enjoy your meal. No washrooms however. Would definitely recommend dropping by if you're in the area.
What an excellent way to start a Canada trip! We were dropped off so we could see Unionville for a few hours, and after speaking with a bartender in our restaurant, she said that we should stop by Old Firehall if we had any time, and wow, it was worth it! Incredible assortment of home-made ice creams, with different styles of cones and cone dressings like caramel, and an absolutely devilish fudge bar. I could feel the pounds coming into my body just by looking at most of the stuff from how good it was. We ended up getting mainly ice cream, but it's some of the tastiest ice cream I've had in a long time. The structure seems to be based out of an older fire department building and the brick just adds an element of home to it. If you have any reason to be in Unionville, make this one of your must-stops. You will not be disappointed.
We went this evening to the Old Firehall Confectionary in Unionville .... It was Xmas time and it's such a good time to go here.... The place has a ton of yummy goods from truffles, chocolate bark, cupcakes, cookies and chocolate covered goods..... They have ice cream and gelato..... But during Xmas they have Belgian hot chocolate which is sooooo good It's hot chocolate made with Belgian chocolate.... It's definitely much more on the thicker side.... Tonight we enjoyed some hot chocolates there..... I had the Dirty hot chocolate....which has a shot of espresso in it My wife had the Nutella hot chocolate.... Both were super good..... We shared a chocolate chip cookie..... The server warmed it up for us making it nice and gooey The items are on the pricier side but the quality is good .... Definitely will come back again for our Xmas treats on a yearly basis read more
I love it here; they have great variety of crafted truffles and chocolate, butter tart, cheesecake, cookies and gourmet cookies, popcorns and cotton candy. They also sell Kawartha ice cream and gelato. Usually, there's a huge lineup for their ice cream and if you arrive later in the evening, they have run other of popular flavors. The staff are friendly and helpful and they have provided a few seats outside the store if you want to sit down and enjoy your dessert. read more

Thank you so much for your review and welcome to Canada! We hope you…
This place has been a mainstay for such a long time because of convenience and nostalgia. Other than Flavours of Unionville there isn't any other ice cream place. (Not counting DQ - HCafe is trying.) Definitely a core part of Main street unionville and honestly... it's a bit of a tourist trap. But you could say that for a lot of the stores around here. I don't recall one scoop of ice cream plus a waffle cone being nearly $7 including tax. That is highway robbery for ice cream that isn't even made in house - it's Kawartha dairy. A pint of Haagen Dazs on sale seems more worth it at this point ($5) or driving a bit further to Kawartha dairy itself. I understand costs have gone up... this is an issue that the whole of Main street has. Excellent location and character, not much action on how to adapt and innovate while retaining that classic character. Chocolates are good but expensive at just over 2 dollars. I mostly see people come here for ice cream not the chocolate or cakes (which I've had - not particularly memorable). The lines used to be incredible but have lessened I think because of the price increase - seeing more people at Flavours now. read more

Hi Katie thank you for stopping by and for your review. As a company…
Chocolate coated Frozen Banana with Nuts!!! Yummmmm.. This place brings out the inner child in me! I get carried away with the colourful candies and chocolates all over the place. They make chocolate so tempting and fancy, that makes me wanna eat all of them. Greedy me :P The dried berries chocolates, easter special chocolates are not only pretty but delicious too. They have a great selection of ice-creams, shakes and tea & coffees. Visit the place to get spoiled! read more

It's usually busy in the summer but the lineup goes really quickly. It's a nice change of pace from the usual ice cream shops. The customization provide such a unique experience. read more

Amazing place for ice cream. Serving Kawartha dairy as well. Their soft serve is full of flavour and their waffle cones are a must. They recently added flavoured dips such as Macha and Ferrero Roche, which are amazing. Price is a little bit higher, but 10/10 worth it. read more
You know those old black and white movies where kids say "gee golly" and buy licorice and lollies for a nickel? This is where they would buy those licorice and lollies. Though inflation is a thing and 5 cent bags of candy don't exist anymore, you still get that old time feel and childish sense of wonder here at Old Firehall Confectionery. For those of us that aren't kids anymore, it's still a fun place with a gourmet twist: delicate macarons, decorated pastries, and painted truffles. Though I love coming here just to take a look around and smell things, I like to treat myself once in awhile to some of their delicious desserts. Ice cream: They serve big, tasty soft-serve ice cream cones here. The blueberry dip is bright blue and slightly tart, a perfect balance with the sweet ice cream. I tried the butterscotch dip before and wasn't a fan of that one though. They also have dippin' dots, which are always a fun twist to eating ice cream the traditional way. Macarons: I love their macarons. They've got great texture and the flavours are very distinct. Sometimes I buy myself a box of six to savour and then immediately feel guilty for eating all of them in one sitting... Pastries: This place tempts me every time with their beautiful pastries. So far, I've only tried one: a strawberry tart. It was flaky and fruity, with just the right amount of sweetness. I'm definitely going to try more of these. Truffles: Bright, colourful, gorgeous to see placed in rows behind the counter. Taste-wise though, I think they were pretty ordinary. They would make great gifts but I don't tend to buy these very often for myself. Sadly, Main Street Unionville is losing bits and pieces of its traditional feel, something that made it truly special. I saw a sign for the opening of a Chinese bubble tea/dessert/whatever place right in the middle...and they already have a Real Fruit on one end and a Chinese escape room on the other. I hope that whatever happens, Old Firehall Confectionery remains standing strong and proud, serving up sweet treats and nostalgia to everyone in Markham. (26/100) - 2016 read more
Biggest landmark on Main street Unionville where you can find all the sweets! You can't miss it and it's a definitely worth a visit if you're strolling around Main street! In the warmer weathers especially summer time, the place is always crowded. People lining up to grab ice cream after dinner, kids strolling through the back of the store to find sweets, and the even have a counter just for chocolates, macaroons, cupcakes and baked goods. I always come here for ice cream at night during the summer times. It makes me feel like a kid in a candy store every time I'm in here. The amount of goodies in this store makes me want it all. They're selection on ice cream is wide and they've been adding more and more every time I'm back. They have just regular ice cream with your choice of regular cone, cup, waffle cone, chocolate waffle cone and waffle bowl. You can choose the amount of scoops you want and each scoop can be a different flavor. There are at least 16 different flavors to choose from, moose tracks, chocolate mine, cotton candy, salty caramel, chocolate chip cookie dough, just to name a few. They also offer soft serve ice cream in 3 different flavors, vanilla, chocolate and mixed. You can also get it dipped in different flavors like chocolate, caramel, green apple and lots more. If you're a fan of dipping dots, they also serve that too! You can order whichever flavor ice cream you want in a cup and top it off with your favorite dipping dots flavor! They also serve ice cream cookies which are huge, 2 cookies of your choice with a huge scoop of ice cream in the middle. I've only had ice cream whenever I visit the old firehall and I find that their ice cream is pretty good, every time I leave very satisfied! It's the best place you can find around that area! Would definitely be coming back for ice cream if I'm in the area! read more

I really feel like a child going into a Candy store when I walked into Old Firehall Confectionery... But I really walked into a Candy Store.. an Ice Cream Parlour.. a Chocolate Shoppe...a Dessert Shop...and more.. Just picking what truffle or Chocolate to try out was NOT a easy task... over 50 different flavours.. and they all look so good........ Ended up I limit myself to 3 mini flavours ($1.29) - Chili, Green Tea and Raspberry/Mango.. they looked so pretty and tasted good too! Cookies on a stick?? Just like a big lollipop!! Oh and I was limited myself to just one... with 5 different flavours to pick from! Peanut Butter Cookies Dipped in Dark Chocolate ($1.99) - My 2 favourite thing all in one.. need I say more!! All my treats were nicely packaged for my enjoyment later... and I almost treat myself to their Hot Chocolate when the girl asked if I want one! But that and the ice cream will have to wait till my next visit! read more

I've always come here whenever I'm in the area - for a quick refresher of ice-cream. There is stone-slab or soft serve to choose from. The one I tried in this picture is the stone-slab Black Raspberry Thunder flavor. I ordered a small and the quantity was way over than expectation - so it's awesome to share if you are with family/friends. The ice-cream is jammed packed with flavor and richness. They don't actually make the ice-cream in front of you, as I assume they are pre-made and scoped out of a jug. You can add additional toppings (sprinkles, chocolate chips, etc.) and change it up to a regular cone/waffle cone or cup. Flavors here are pretty consistent in quality and quantity - I would wish they can either offer season flavors or introduce new ones to spice it up. Other than that, it's a go to place when you're in Main Street. It's the perfect thing in the summer when you stroll around the neighbourhood. Don't forget to try out their chocolates and candy vending machine! read more
I discovered this store today when I was in Unionville. It smells amazing when you walk in the door. The amount of choice is HUGE ... chocolates, fudge, candied apples, ice cream, old style candy, etc. It's not a cheap place but it's definitely worth a stop when you are on Main Street. read more

I love this place. Its like walking into an old fashioned ice cream parlor and candy shop. Judging by the line ups in the summer everyone else loves it to. Location: In Unionville on main Street. Parking: ok if it's not summer. If it's summer - may the force be with you. (Hint-get someone else to drive) Building: An old firehall. Shocking. They used to fit two firetrucks side by side. The goods: Hello it's a confectionery and let me say it does not disappoint. They have everything from flavoured popcorn to ice cream to tea to cake to macaroons to chocolate truffles. Sigh. This is why I'm so fat... My favourite summer treat is the black raspberry thunder ice cream in a waffle cone. Summer can't come soon enough. They have fresh baked croissants on the weekends. Come early and get 'em while they are still warm from the oven. The almond ones, well, just thinking about them is making me drool a little. There's a tart with raspberries that I'm currently obsessed with. Oh they make like 98% of their baked goods in house. yazzzzz Warning: You will spend a lot of money. Also holy Pokemon's batman. You have the pokemon crew to fight with for space but it's dying down and they have a tonne of staff working Staff Everyone is so nice here. Everyone. Chances are you will find at least one of the owners working regardless if it's the day or evening. Ask questions Conclusion: Yeah that probably me you see there. read more
Located in the center of Main Street Unionville, this has definitely been the place I'll always visit when we are in the neighborhood. It's great for people of all ages that love sweets! When you walk in you do smell the yummy sugary scent that is coming out of the store. They offered a variety of sweets such as ice-cream, coated apples, a variety of chocolate and candies. Everything is crafted nicely and put together that everything is so attractive and you want to buy and try everything in the store just because they look so nice. The store is on the pricier side, but I guess all the handcrafted products do take a lot of time and effort to make and therefore justify the cost. d It does get very crowded, every time we go it's usually crowded. read more
