I'm a fan. I tried to make reservations for 2 people, but they didn't do that for any parties smaller than 4 people. That's the reason for my 4 star review. The place gets awfully busy, hence, me wanting to rsvp. It's okay, though. Everything else made up for it! While we were waiting to get seated, we waited by the bar, then by the door to get out of everyone's way. I'm not sure who this man was...maybe the GM or owner? But he offered my fiancé and I drinks. We declined since we weren't sure who he was at the time. Very nice fellow. We waited about 20-25 mins to be seated. Old Fields has the charm of an old school restaurant with a beautiful bar and dining area. The menu has a nice mix of food on offer with prices that seem pretty reasonable. The service is friendly, professional, and fairly quick. The cocktails were on point as well! Everyone seemed to be pretty satisfied with their food choice. I had the 10 oz filet which was pretty good but I think I'd have the sauce on the side next time. The Brussels sprouts were delicious! We went on a Saturday night the place was busy but not overly crowded we were seated quickly it took about 20 minutes to get a waitress to her table she was very pleasant very attentive when she was there for drinks I had a mango jalapeño margarita it was very good I husband had two beers We are two adults and two children we started with the chicken skewers very tasty I asked for bread for the table for the kids because they were hungry and I was told they do not have bread they will bring us some bread that goes with the Mussels for two dollars I did not offer a kids menu which I was kind of surprised and disappointed because there are plenty of kids in the restaurant We had a lobster roll fried chicken and fish and chips which were all good I think they should've had a sauce or a hot honey for the fried chicken and it really would've took it to another level Cream spinach was very tasty the macaroni and cheese with a bit of a miss for $13 for a side dish read more

Okay...wow! I have a friend in Port Jeff that I was visiting and we decided to go out for dinner this weekend. Although I'm vegetarian, I'm not picky with places and can always find something on the menu to eat! She recommended Old Fields and told me it's their favorite local Steakhouse. I was sure I'd probably only find a side or so to eat and was okay just eating later on. It was raining out but it was so warm and cozy inside! I immediately realized how packed the place was and the dim lighting inside made for the best dinner vibes!! As I got there and looked at the menu, I realized how many vegetarian options they had available. There was also a fireplace close to our table that made us feel extra cozy and our table had cute table lights that went perfect w/ the fall cocktails & restaurant aesthetic. I loved that they had so many specials and features. They had a specials menu for food that night as well as three seasonal fall cocktail options. To start, I had the pumpkin martini which was very sweet but definitely "fall-y" and yum! Maybe get it as a dessert cocktail. For apps to share, we got the night special stracciatella & fig flatbread as well as the zucchini chips. We loved both! The flatbread with the figs & balsamic was perfect and the zucchini chips breading was sooo flavorful and delicious with the dipping sauce they give you. For my entree, they had a "Mezzi Orecchiette" which was Orecchiette pasta with a summer vegetable medley in a lemon cream sauce. This was the best thing I had! The lemon cream sauce was so creamy and rich and paired perfect with the fresh vegetables and pasta. I would definitely go back just to have this again. For dessert, we were already so full but decided to get a creme brulee. Of course this was delicious and had maraschino cherries on top - my fav! We ended the night drinking cocktails by the fire. The other thing I noticed was how good the service was. I can't remember her name but our server was so upbeat and fun and had so many recommendations for us. I just spent 175.00 on dinner for 2, and I'm not sure why. I feel taken advantage of. A very sweet waiter took our order. Drinks were laggy.The waiter and a woman that probably was the manager were attentive initially. Then they both forgot we existed. Waited an incredible amount of time for a check. Then the waiter said he gave me my credit card back. ( He hadn't). And voila! He was still holding it in his hand! No apology. And the food was just ok. Old Fields in Greenlawn, NY had quite the reputation for years of good food for a reasonable price. Recently visited their Port Jeff location and 4 of us were highly dissapointed. The prices went through the roof (in our case $240.00 no alcohol) Wow! Can no longer blame the pandemic and food supply chain shortages, so what can it be? Let's start with our appetizer of super chewy calamari. Other restaurant's take huge pride in this particular treats' recipe. Not the case here and although I am not a seafood expert I don't know what constitutes what is fresh and what was once frozen? But chewy is chewy. Followed with a long time favorite Wedge Salad with blue cheese. Once was joined with chunks of slab bacon (nice touch), now replaced with same ol' same ol' bacon bits easily obtained from a supermarket brand shaker. Server advised they have a new chef. Was this chef hired to make the menu cuts? Now the entre', Four of us obviously all had steaks, on this night the Flat Irons. Steaks screamed mediocrity. Even my son who attended chef school couldn't believe the steaks arrived ungarnished. Just average steak in the middle of a large white plate. Not exactly an appetizing appearance. Overall we find a much better deal at Longhorn Steakhouse for half the price. The rest of the side dishes and skimpy portions were just ok and nothing to write home about. I don't know, maybe Old Fields is just no longer our thing. Sadly in these times restaurants must be able to go above & beyond and give folks more bang for the buck. Been here maybe 10 times over last 5 years since we're pretty local...if you don't mind a VERY dark interior, then it's ok. Although food is good, especially their turkey burger and onion soup, their prices have gotten stupid! I had dinner here with new friends recently. It was really good. The place was very loud though so it was hard to hear each other. We started with some appetizers. All were enjoyed by the table. Shrimp and grits, PEI Mussels, Popcorn chicken & waffles. I did not eat the mussels but enjoyed the shrimp and chicken on those plates. Very flavorful and tasty. For my entrée, I had the short rib risotto. The short rib was fall-apart tender as it should be. The risotto had a good truffle taste but not too strong. Soft rice too. Good veggies too. Everyone else enjoyed their meals. The place was very busy as it was Friday night so our waiter was a bit slow it getting to us regularly but overall we had a good meal. Stopped by late on a Wednesday night and were able to get seated immediately. Our server (Kathy/Cathy) was a delight and prioritized getting our (hangry) kids situated asap. Food was great - there is a verbal kids menu. Started with wagyu meatballs (loved the polenta!). Toddler had Mac n cheese, big kid has a burger, I had the seafood special (monkfish), and husband had the famous skirt steak and we shared a side of creamed spinach. Somehow big kid had room for dessert and loved the s'more brownie sundae. Service was incredibly good and food was delicious - would gladly come back! Walked in on Saturday night around 7pm without reservation, luckily we only waited for 15 minutes. We had a really delightful meal and the service was good. For starter, we ordered New England clam chowder (serve in a unique pot), and French onion soup. My short-rib risotto was flavorful and my hubby really enjoyed the 24oz ribeye steak. Went here for my daughter's birthday, it was a Saturday night. It was crowded but not over crowded where you had to wait. First of all the waitress was so snippy with an attitude like she didn't want to be working there. We ordered the chicken bites for appetizer, that was good. Drinks horrible, bartender doesn't know how to make an old fashion. Tasted like no alcohol was even in the drinks. Dinner comes, small serving sizes , now I've been to this restaurant serval times as it used to be my favorite but it changed. My salmon was as skinny as a pencil. My daughter and her boyfriend order short rib which super tiny. My husband order steak in which came with the tiny scoop of potatoes. Ok that was dinner. Desert came as we are singing happy birthday the rude waitress is cleaning up our table ,couldn't even give us a second to finish singing to our daughter. I doubt I'll ever go back there. We had a going away party here for one of my co-workers and were seated in a window area with a sunny exposure. Albeit the view was of the parking lot... but one could pretend it was of something more pleasant. They had a set menu with salad/soup, entree and dessert which was IMO excellent value and quality. Service was excellent and atmosphere was perfect for the event. The staff was super friendly and we were able to get in on Saturday evening without a reservation with a modest wait. The French Onion Soup and Fried Calamari were both excellent. The Calamari was cooked to perfection and the dipping sauces both very good. There was no bread on the table, but truth be told we didn't really miss it. Drinks and apps arrived very quickly. The Filet Mignon was an excellent choice, served with asparagus and mashed potato's, you can't go wrong here. The Strip Steak which was the special, while generous in size and very good, was a bit pricey and certainly not a stand out. The Short Rib Risotto looked amazing in the photos but did not live up to the hype. They were not well trimmed so what looked like a generous portion was more fat that meat. The meat itself was tender but the goat cheese overpowered the dish. All in all the meal was good but after seeing the rating and reading the reviews I was a bit disappointed. Pricey Menu, Small Portions, Ordinary Food, Sub Par Service, Uncomfortable Atmosphere So After so many glowing Yelp Reviews of this Restaurant I decided on coming for a nice dinner. The restaurant was fairly empty aside from a party in the private room. Me & my 2 friends were seated at a tiny TINY booth which was extremely uncomfortable! Beware tall people...you will hit your knees climbing into the seat. Wasn't a fan of the fugly carpet in the dining room either. What gets me is there were a few ants crawling on the table & silverware throughout my meal and I get it, it's summer so sometimes bugs do get inside but I didn't expect them. Located right off Main St, park in the back lot near the playground, behind the Village Hall. Parking is always metered, bring quarters. Service wasn't great. The Waiter was EXTREMELY nice but I felt that the overall service was definitely lacking in comparison to other restaurants that charge similar prices for food/drinks. Drinks took quite some time to come to the table, above average...well above average wait time. Also the wait time for apps & dinner took much longer than expected, especially because it wasn't crowded...not even close to being crowded. Food was the best part of the overall "Old Fields Experience" but certainly not enough to rate this Restaurant over 3 stars. There aren't a huge abundance of dinner choices. The apps & dinner I chose were tasty but nothing over the top. The portion sizes were on the small side and very expensive (I don't mind expensive if I'm receiving a good product...this product wasn't good). Also no complimentary bread for the table which is always a thumbs down moment...while waiting for my appetizers and dinner it would have been nice to snack on a fresh piece of bread or 2. I did love the truffle balsamic! 3.5 out of 5 stars -Caesar Salad: Large enough to share as an appetizer, definitely don't recommend this for dinner unless you want to leave the restaurant starving. The dressing was nothing special but the lettuce was nice and fresh. 3 out of 5 stars -Short Rib Risotto: The short rib was nice and tender as all short ribs should be. Loved the tomato & hints of black truffle throughout the dish but the crispy onions did nothing for me. Also the Risotto wasn't that impressive, I've had way better elsewhere. 3 out of 5 stars -Marinated Skirt Steak: The steaks here are pricey pricey pricey! One skirt steak was cooked to my friends liking, my other friend also ordered the skirt steak and it missed the mark by a mile. 1 dollop of chunky mashed potatoes which were decent and a spoonful of nicely cooked green beans are what accompanied the steak. The issue was the steak had WAYYYY too much char on... an overwhelming large amount of char! Also the steak was super thin and was served what looked like a child's portion of meat. For the $35 price tag, this dish DEFINITELY wasn't worth it. 2.5 out of 5 stars Overall I'm glad I tried Old Fields but this restaurant definitely didn't live up to the hype! Probably my favorite American restaurant in Port Jefferson. I have had countless delicious meals here (the short rib risotto, oysters, filet mignon and ahi tuna sandwich), you can't really go wrong. I recently tried the tomato and basil salad which was a little too simple but had the freshest vegetables, can't complain! They have expanded their outdoor seating for the COVID crisis which has actually been a nice option in addition to their rustic indoor seating areas and elegant patio settings. The bar isn't busy so I ask the bartender for a sample of Shiner Bock. My waitress comes over and I order: THE "56" ". A burger so good it needs double quotes. 1956 Marinade topped with swiss cheese and sautéed onions. Great bun as well, this burger is a perfect gastropub burger. And this is why Old Fields is more rounded than the bars on Main St. They are bars only, food is secondary. Amazing food, great service, and an overall very pleasant dining experience once we got in to the restaurant. Our steaks were cooked perfectly, the sides were delicious, and they have a solid wine list too. One star has been taken off of an otherwise 5-star experience because the check-in process was unnerving and uncomfortable. There were far too many people packed into a very tight entry space and we weren't seated until at least a half-hour passed our reservation time. This isn't the fault of the staff, all of whom were polite and apologetic on a hectic, busy night. The owners really need to do a better job helping their staff and provide more space for diners while they wait to be seated on busy weekend nights, especially in the winter. It's fairly pricey and there have been some dishes that weren't as good as others of course. I would recommend: Favorite dishes: The short rib risotto - this is a must try. the dish is perfect Dessert bread pudding was great Appetizer: I'm usually kind of tipsy when we order so I can't remember if it was the mussels or clams that we ordered. It was a bit on the salty side to be honest. They have a salad with goat cheese that was very good BEERS they frequently change the selection and the servers are very knowledgeable I would give it 5 starts but I really haven't tried another main course (aside from the short rib risotto) that elevates it to that level. The hangar steak was very tough. I've tried some of the other steaks as well. I will keep coming back though and gladly upgrade my rating. We went to this restaurant last Sunday evening for dinner. I read some complaints about seating time but we were seated immediately. Our waitress, Natalie was fabulous knew the menu and specials very well and made some honest suggestions. I hate when everything is wonderful but Natalie was honest. Just leave it at that. After apps three of us had the Flat Iron Steak, a suggestion from Natalie. My wife had the Skirt Steak. She ordered medium but it came out well. Natalie noticed the discrepancy and immediately apologized and took the steak away. A real professional. In the end she reordered a Flat Iron steak, and all four steals were perfect. Manager came over to apologize for the mishap also. No excuses. We loved this restaurant and will definitely be back. You should try it too read more
