"Olé, Olé, Olé, Olé, Olé, Olé, Olé, Olé. O-LAY, O-LAY!"
Often the chant you here at a football stadium, Olé Olé is also a new Spanish tapas bar/restaurant hidden away in a basement in Kemp Town.
I was there for a friend's birthday: a Spanish friend, who had lots of Spanish friends, which meant the odds were stacked against the restaurant. Having eaten at probably one of the most authentic tapas bars in the world when in Andalucia last year, I too expected to be disappointed.
First impressions were not bad. The place is very clean and modern and the staff were actually Spanish, which bodes well in the authenticity stakes. It was a little empty, but in all honesty, it was early on a Thursday night and in an unknown corner of Kemp Town. However, our 15+ crowd of international folk soon gave the place a buzz.
You get free tapas with every drink at the bar, (something they don't even tend to do in Spain anymore) which should definitely be a more common affair in pubs in my opinion. The prices are average - £3.15 for a pint of Stella - and the drinks were served in nice big Stella glasses, which I always like.
When we sat to eat, the area was spacious and the staff laid on plate after plate, after plate, after plate of edible Spanish treats. The Spaniards around me seemed content enough, as was I. Content, but not enthralled. The food was a little bland and although the plates kept coming, the portions were a little stingy. There was a distinct lack of my favourite meats such as jamón and chorizo, but I would rather have not eaten them than had to endure a feeble imitation.
The food came in at around £13 per head, including a healthy serving of Sangria, which made the meal all the merrier. You can eat more food for less money in Brighton, but I felt as an overall experience it was just about worth the money. Plus the birthday girl was happy, which is the main thing I guess! Not brilliant, but not awful: 3 stars. read more
