Like many of the other Chinese restaurants in Brighton, this place serves legit Chinese food. It…read morehelps to have a healthy population of Chinese immigrants. =P I ordered the duck noodle soup. The soup was light in flavor but they have chili sauce, pepper and vinegar to play around with the taste. Looking forward to trying their other dishes.

I've lived in Brighton for nearly two years now and, as a person who spent my formative years in…read moreHong Kong, could not find any local Chinese restaurant that took my fancy -- until now. As the first dish arrived, a warm noodle dish with a fermented bean sauce that I've ordered at countless Chinese resistants over the years despite repeated punishing disappointment, I was shocked to find it to be... perfect. Just the right amount of rich meat flavouring, no bitterness or cloying sweetness dominating the dish, and perfect ratio of sauce to noodles. The best version of this dish I have eaten outside of China. Then I tried the next dish -- again a commonly available and frequently ordered seared green beans with some spice and minced meat. Disbelief began to set in -- this was the best version of this dish I had in my LIFE. I began to wonder if I had accidentally starved myself for a week to make everything taste this good. Maybe I was going insane from infrequent Chinese food consumption. Maybe I needed to eat at a trashy Chinese restaurant to make sure I was properly calibrated. How could this random restaurant on Queens road, full of eateries that don't even have to be good because they get tourist foot traffic, be blowing my mind? We ordered yet two more dishes. The "Chinese Burger" -- our server admitted he just couldn't find a decent translation for the dish -- which consisted of fatty shredded richly flavoured meat not unlike the Chinese version of the shredded whole roast hog sandwiches that have recently joined London food markets in Southbank Centre and Borough Market. Much like my discovery of Polish lard spread with bits of bacon, the flavour put me beyond caring about the fat content. We finished with a Hunan tofu dish that, again, was stellar and for me an interesting contrast to a lot of the Sichuan tofu preparations I've tried in the past. Unusual for Chinese restaurants in the area, the server/owner was really friendly and chatty, talking about his idea behind the restaurant and photographing the food for the pictures in the window. It was a really warm welcome and only made me more excited to return. The only caveats are the small seating availability (it wasn't crowded -- yet -- but they only just opened a week ago) though they do takeaway, and the fact that the English menu is different from the Chinese menu, and contains an odd assortment of things mostly that people who don't really like and/or know Chinese food could order. It's ridiculous and you should order from the pictures in the window or ask the waiter what is actually on the Chinese menu. I begged them to translate it before I left. I'm still really confused about how every dish was beyond delicious. I will have to go eat at the lowest rated Chinese restaurant on Yelp, a Michelin starred one in London, and here again before I will probably be able to truly believe this magical experience really happened and can be had anytime I'm willing to spare a 5 min walk and £15pp. You think I'm joking, but I'll report back after I'm sure I'm properly calibrated.

There's a fair few Chinese restaurants in Brighton and Hove but this is by far the best. The food…read moreis excellent and really, really reasonable. The first thing you notice when you arrive is the amount of Chinese people eating there which is always a pleasant sight. The staff make you feel welcome from the moment they greet you and show you to your table to the moment they bring you the bill. The house white wine is very drinkable indeed and at £11 a bottle, there's no need to hold back ordering the stuff! My favourite part of any Chinese meal is the appetizers and at Good Friends, they really are worth making the most of (even if you order a smaller main course). My favourite is the salt and pepper squid which hits the balance so well between flavour and spiciness. The won-ton soup is light and really gets the taste buds ready for the next few courses which in my humble opinion should consist of their crispy duck and pancakes and then some sweet and sour pork with special fried rice. I'm always too full up to eat a pudding but they do have a selection of sorbets and ice-creams. We've had so many meals here from birthday parties to engagement celebrations and have never been disappointed. A truly warm and welcoming place that cooks it food extremely well.

Located towards the foot of Preston Street, separated from Western Road by a glut of other Oriental…read moreplaces, Good Friends is often unrightfully neglected. Whether this is down to its location or its inconspicuous exterior is beside the point. The fact is the food is great. It avoids being overly MSG-reliant and this allows space for the dishes' natural flavours to emerge. Although it might not knock you for six, reliability seems to be the philosophy of Good Friends, which makes sense because surely that's what friends are for.

Anyone and everyone in Brighton and Hove should be careful of these people. When I first called…read morethese people I was met with a lovely person although when I started to explain the problems they immediatly got very defensive and blamed it on the fact that this was the first time I ordered which was nearly £40. I have no problem with the price if the food is worth it, although nothing about this entire experience has been worth it I understand that this was the first time I ordered although such massive problems cant have just only happened to me. The wontons were so small with meat I thought they had made a mistake and only put in the crispy bits. I was told that this is the way they do it. The containers were some of the smallest I have ever seen and were not even filled. One of the containers (which was at the bottom of the bag) had a corner broken off of it and was blamed on delivery, although when I explained it was at the bottom of the bag and there was no broken plastic anywhere I was informed it was still the delivery drivers fault (who was on a moped, which is understandable if there was eveidence of the broken piece)......... Does this mean that the delivery drivery driver picked out the broken piece or that the person who handled my food container was so careless that they didnt even realise????? There was no display of the fact that I would get dipping sauce with my won tons so I ordered a sauce (£2.50) and when my order came there was a sauce already with it, fine thats not a problem, in fact thats a good thing I get free sauce with my won tons, although maybe a side note when im ordering it wouldve been good so I knew that there was already sauce with it so i didnt have to buy sauce for no reason. Included is a few pictures I took to show the appaling quality to which I recieved.
