Us blokes can have a tricky ol' time when searching for clothes. It's easy to convince yourself that there's only boutique type shops designed for women. However, there is one that caters for men that stands out a mile in Manchester and that's Oi Polloi. It's a cosy little shop that has knowledgeable and friendly staff behind the counter and racks of great clothes and, in something that they excel in, shoes. Specialising in the things you can't really buy anywhere else, expect to see Burlington, Fjallraven, Gloverall, John Smedley and Nudie Jeans in the shop rather than the usual stock you find shunted the way of the disinterested male. The stock can be a little pricey, but you don't mind paying for things that feel like they've been ordered in for their quality and, to be quite frank, good looks. It's definitely got a vibe of the cool 30something, what with Clarke's Originals and duffels on the cards, but there's a wonderful array of stock for those who want to buy something cool and different. For those not in Manchester, you'll be glad to learn that you can buy online... although, your bank manager might get annoyed with you as you find yourself spending a month's wages on smart threads.

But then I guess a bit of 'man' is lost once you start going towards designer, which this shop definitely is. The January sales are still in effect here, with t-shirts discounted from £80 to £40. I wouldn't spend £80 on a t-shirt, but then I definitely wouldn't spend £40 either. I just don't quite understand the whole put sparkle on any item of clothing whether it's a t-shirt or some jeans policy to make clothes designer thing. It doesn't really work for me. That said, there's an amazing selection of jeans, t-shirts and jackets in Swagger Menswear and unfortunately it just isn't really to my taste. If being flashy is your thing, you could well find something here for you.

But this Swagger is a menswear shop that boasts some famous clients. It's just that... the clients aren't exactly my cup of tea clotheswise. Darren from Hollyoaks? Well I'm not judging him in real life but he is the worst dressed member of the cast. JLS? Don't even get me started on those primary colours. Footballers? Gah! They do offer Ringspun clothing which I'm generally a fan of, but the jeans are a bit too garish for my liking. I'm one way or the other with how men dress, it's either an earthy-tone clad Diesel model or Noel Fielding. I can't have any of this in between nonsense. The dreaded Ed Hardy rears its head here - that awkward brand whose logo looks great on the backs of the leather and denim jackets of skinny indie types and retro pin-up chicks but generally dreadful on the jeans of... well, chavs. Swagger is hit and miss. It might be worth a visit for some unusual and interesting items, and sometimes you can encounter special offers like two pairs of jeans for £70, but so far it hasn't proved to be my cup of tea in a more general sense.

Yes of course they're there to make a sale, but at no point did I feel any pressure to buy. Looking for a decent shirt for the wedding of friends of mine, after a quick measuring with tape and being presented with their 'tester shirts' (you don't try on the ones you'd buy, these are to find out which fitting suits you best) I was shown to their fitting rooms. After trying on a few and deciding on a style, it was over to the shelving and they brought down some options. I ended up with a lovely crisp shirt for just shy of £35. For the level of attention I received I was expecting it to cost three times that price. I left with a smile on my face and you know what? They've hooked me as a return customer now. I'll gladly spend my money where they treat customers with such regard.

The quality for a £30 shirt is miles ahead of what Thomas Pink and other competitors are offering at north of £100. Many of their jackets are half/fully lined with functioning button holes which are very hard to find for the price they are charging in this day and age. The customer service is very friendly too!

For people who are unaware, Slater's are a formal and partially casual clothes shop. Selling a wide range of Suits, ties, shirts, shoe's...You get the idae. However, they offer such a greater experience than just your average shop. This all boils down to the staff. The whole shop floor situates on the 2nd floor, completely open planned with clothing in every place possible. The layout is neither cluttered, or overwhelming, and you can find your own way round very easily. The staff here treat you like royalty, which is unusual for a shop of such class and amazing quality clothes. They will happily help you pick out the right suit to match you as a person, recommending certain colours, sizes and even styles. Once you've done so, they will take everything you've had an interest in, or are willing to purchase and place it on a centred table. as to eliminate the choir or carrying all your purchases, and allowing you to lay them somewhere for you to observe if any second thoughts come into your head. Everything they sell here is pristine. Everything provided for sale here is of excellent quality, and even better is the affordable price tag attached to them. What's especially impressive is the way the shop matches affordable clothing, at an "Expensive" feel (If that makes any sense) If you're looking for your next suit or work clothing for your next meeting/ wedding/ party or even just to wear casually then without a doubt make sure you visit this place, you will not be disappointed.
