I have been utilizing OSU Optometry for years, and they are excellent! Their scheduling is easy and they are "on time"for appointments. Shane, the third year student, and Dr. Orr were caring and took time to explain everything. Their exam was thorough. They took time to review my entire medical and prescription history and answered all questions. Jeff, who manages the optical shop, is great at helping you choose the appropriate type of lenses as well as type of frame. Their new building is very nice and clean. This comment pertains only to the Eyewear Gallery. I ordered a new pair of glasses and (1) the "intern" rushed through her measurements resulting in a pair of glasses I could not see in; and (2) the replacement pair came from the lab with a crack in the lenses and had to be returned. I am still waiting for the third pair more than six weeks later. A long-time client, I will not order glasses from this vendor again. read more

If you have any concerns about getting your eyes examined at this clinic, no worries at all. Student practitioners may actually be more thorough than those optometrist already working since they need to go through all that they are or have been learning. Additionally, a teaching optometrist (professor) will do a cursory re-examination to double check the evaluation of the student. While this process may add a few minutes to a typical exam, the time spent is worth it in my opinion. My examiner was personable and professional. The professor confirmed the initial results giving me a reassuring level of confidence that my eyes had been checked well. read more

I received excellent eye care at the clinic. The checkin process was quick. I had previously pre-checked in via the internet. I was examined by a second year optometry student who gave me such a thorough eye exam. She was competent and really knows her stuff. The school of optometry has done a fantastic job in training future optometrists in providing excellent eye care. Then the eye exam results were double checked by the teaching doctor. The results were exactly what the doctor expected. The customer service and care were excellent. I had 100%+ confidence in my eye exam results. So just like everything else you have to walk! There's a parking garage near and they do validate your ticket! But I always park at the meter lol! So it's brand new so theres not this crazy smell that the last building had! They still check you in downstairs and take your temperature! Going upstairs to the third floor it was so nice! There's 2 sitting rooms that I seen there maybe more lol. I really like this new building and today marks two years since my eye surgery and it was a wonderful day since I got to take my contacts home finally!!! I can see so we'll and the atmosphere was great!!! All the staff are nice and so personable! Most definitely will recommend to everyone! read more

I hate to leave a bad review, but I can't say I'd recommend the OSU optometry clinic. I went for a basic check-up and was greeted by the optometry student who'd be giving my exam. He was friendly and professional and honestly he could've fooled me for an actual doctor. My eyes aren't complicated and we went through the usual exam in about 25 minutes. I met the supervising doctor and the student led me through 3 or 4 various vision tests (this was after he said my eyes had no issues and my prescription would be ready). He then dilated my pupils and shined the light to look at the back of my eyes. Again this was fine, but then we had to wait a while for the supervisor to come and re-shine the light in my eyes to double check the student's work. In all my appointment took 2 hours between all the tests and waiting for the supervisor. By the end of the appointment, I was getting worried (had they spotted something with my eyes?), but they reassured me that it was just for the student to get practice. You'd assume since OSU is a non-profit and you basically serve as a guinea pig, they'd offer dirt cheap exams, right? Well, my exam cost $145, about $50 more than at a private eye doctor. The student and his supervisor were great (they were friendly and answered all my questions), but if you're going to serve as a test subject, they can't charge such a high price. read more

It's hard to believe that they were just so careless. I received a pair of glasses instead of sunglasses I thought I ordered a week ago. I remembered that I was initially asked to pay for the fee to upgrade glasses to sunglasses, but was later told the insurance could cover all. Therefore, I am not sure whether the issue was because of the student insurance can only cover the glasses but not sunglasses (as they've told me three times today), so they just went with the pair that can be covered (instead of the thing I want :) ). Overall, the whole thing is a great example of putting the cart before the horse. I am happy that everything can be cancelled in the end, but I do regret the time I wasted there. If you are an OSU student, go to the OSU Student health Center, the lady there knows much better of what she's doing. read more

I found the exam to be very interesting. I enjoyed listening to the students explain everything. The doctor that did the review was very thorough and quick. However, the eye glass selection process was the worst. The prices were so far from what I could afford. With my insurance they could only find 2 pair of glasses that my insurance would cover. I finally decided on a pair, even through I would have to pay more than my insurance covered, and I was told that they could not apply the bi-focal because of the curve on the lenses. I decided to look someplace else. Guess what! the very next place I tried could do the bi-focal on curved lenses. However, I could not use my insurance because Ohio State had my insurance locked!! I will not be going back to Ohio State - ever! read more

As always, I had a great eye examination at The OSU College of Optometry. The student clinician was very competent and provided a thorough examination in which I was confident. Everything the student mentioned was reiterated by the instructor, so I knew that the student was well-prepared. I had a small issue for which they performed specialized testing that day and explained the reason for and results of the test. I will return in two months for repeat testing, and I look forward to my visit. read more

Everyone was very nice. My issue was it took 3 hours. This was the longest doctor visit I have had in over 20 years. The frames I chose were not available to me. So, that was part of the problem. Had to find another frame. Then I the computer had to be rebooted. read more

I always forget how thorough (complete) the students are, but also how thorough (extensive) the students are. Expect appointments to take about 2 hours (if your eyes are not too complicated). The students are generally personable, informative, and helpful, and the attendings seem interested in teaching and providing good care. Please note- if you're getting a first name from the learner doing the majority of your exam, it's very likely they are a student, not a resident. Students wear short white coats. They're still quite knowledgeable, and allowed to do a fair amount independently, especially as they get closer to graduation. But you should know who's providing your care. And rarely a student will miss an important detail of your exam. If you're being told something is abnormal that hasn't seemed abnormal to you, ask the attending to repeat the test. It only happened to me once, but a student forgot to correct my vision for part of my exam, and I wound up having to go to a subspecialty clinic for further testing only to find the test was totally normal when done correctly. If I'd thought to ask someone more experienced to repeat it, I wouldn't have had to make another trip. Overall, good thorough care. read more

I am not an OSU student (anymore) and don't have good insurance, so I went to this teaching facility in hopes of getting low-cost treatment for a foreign body that got lodged in my eyeball. First off, they were able to see me within 10 minutes of me calling. They took my info over the phone and I was not burdened with filling out a lot of paperwork or waiting long when I arrived. I was immediately given a student optometrist and taken into a private exam room. The student optometrist was attentive and professional and used several techniques to try to dislodge it, but the foreign object was tiny and she had to get an attending physician to find it and dislodge it. The attending physician treated me while discussing his techniques with the student. That was interesting, and since he was able to get the object out without any discomfort to me I rate this a pretty positive experience given that I had walked in with a brick shard in my eyeball. He also actually called to check up on me, which I have never had a doctor do before. My cost was only about $74 which did not include any student discounts or insurance, which was less than I was expecting. WARNING: Bring quarters and fill up the meter you park by if you have to drive. Parking is tight and there ARE roving parking enforcement officers. Edit: the other reviewers mentioning the hotness of the student optometrists are spot on. I didn't realize it until I read that review, but its the truth. read more

The exam was thorough (though long) and only cost a $15 copay with my student insurance. Nice doctors. No complaints there. However, I'm not sure I can recommend buying glasses here. My glasses were $400 (after a 20% discount with OSU student health insurance) and as it turns out, aren't in stock anyway. It took them 3 weeks after my $400 credit card charge to let me know that, in fact, it would be two months before I could ever get my glasses if I wanted those frames. In the end, they told me that since they'd already produced the lenses for me, they'd have to charge me a fee to cancel my order. They offered 10% off if I picked different frames - which I did, after discovering that a nearly-identical color in the same frame was, in fact, available. Nice of them to tell me that. Long story short, it took me well over a month to get my glasses. They are nice, but after that experience, I don't think I'll be coming back for glasses. read more

As much as I dislike the student health insurance, I was very pleased with the benefits received at the Optometry Clinic. The most important thing to most in choosing a clinic is probably cost, followed by service received. Well....I'm here to tell you that is ALL WRONG! You should come here solely because EVERYONE who works here is smokin' hot! I had two different female students who were both very thorough and then was followed up by an instructor. I didn't get glasses, so I cannot agree/disagree with Kevin's review, but I did get contacts. The office staff worked with my and my student doctor to find a type of contact that would work for me but also helped me determine the right amount to order so I could use some rebate coupons they had to save me some cash. And then they even had them shipped to my house (no extra charge), saving me a trip back to the office (but depriving me of the optometry school eye-candy...) On a subsequent visit, after realizing how much contact re-wetting drops cost, they let me load up on a ton of sample-sized Blink drops. Yay freebies! read more

I've been to this location at least 2, maybe 3 times over the past couple of years with my Mom. We always park in the Safe Auto garage and then walk over to the optometry clinic. Luckily for us when we were there the other day, it was gorgeous out and there were alot of students around on campus. The two gals at the receptionist desk were very friendly when we checked in. We waited 10 minutes at the most before we were called in by two optometry students. The one was very handsome and sweet where the other one was quiet and was mostly the 'note taker' between the two of them. They were very friendly and made sure that we knew where we were going while we were in the building. Nice place on campus. Made me a little nervous driving there and getting to our appointment on time given all of the construction on campus. read more

I went to OSU for an eye exam which lasted about 2 hours and seemed very thorough . I was given a prescription and taken to their eye wear department where I selected frames. The glasses were made in just a few days, but were not made correctly as I could not see well at all with them. I went back at a later date for another lengthy examination and the student adjusted the prescription and they made new lenses which were still not correct. They made them a third time and they are still not correct. Disgusted, I just took them and left being out $300.00. I cannot believe one of the most prestigious universities in this country cannot make a set of lenses! I have never had trouble with any other place getting good glasses. read more

The students are friendly and thorough. Exams take a long time, but I haven't had to spend much time in waiting room. It seems like most student optometrists (2 of 3 who have seen me) are really patronizing and talk to me like I'm a kid even with doing singsong tones and barely keeping themselves from an giving me an attagirl and a pat on the head when I've surprised them by being able to tell them family history. The attending optometrists' bedside manner is a lot more professional, and everyone is always ready to answer questions. read more

As others have said, expect your exam to take about two hours (it's often faster, but allow two hours). The upside is that it will be the most thorough eye exam of your life! The students are working for a grade, not money, so there's no pressure on them to hurry you out the door - you'll will be tested on every machine they have in every way possible. In my case, they found two unusual eye conditions that the strip mall doctor's never bothered to test for. read more

I stand by my earlier assessment of the exam experience. Buying glasses here is ridiculous. I wasn't helped for 45 minutes after conspicuously wandering around the gallery. I had to give someone a glare to get any help. They also don't order frames in alternate colors even though manufacturers offer them. This is just weird. I made an appointment to get a new prescription with the intent to order glasses online. I told this to the person taking the appointment, the student optometrist and his supervisor. After the exam I was lead to their eye glass store where I could purchase glasses for 20 times what they would cost me online and once again said that I was going to order them online and left with the prescription that I had paid $115 to get. When I got online I found the one of the measurements that I needed (distance between iris') was missing. Today I went back to get it and was told that OSU Optometry Clinics does not give the information to anyone. The biggest problem I see with this is that you pay more to be a training exercise for their students than a fully licensed Optometrist charges and then you are only allowed to purchase their highly marked up frames and lenses. Don't waste your hard earned money on being an beta tester for their students and over priced glasses. read more

I'm a retired educator who moved to Columbus and was late for my annual check. When I came in to check on potential appointments, the receptionist attempted to fit me in the same day...there were no openings so we set an appointment for the following week (about three days out). The exam by a student intern was thorough with explanation of each step along the way. The attending optometrist double-checked the results and one of the tests. I was noticing shadows when I read the charts with my left eye; the student wasn't sure so asked the attending who set me at ease. There was enough change in one eye that we went with new glasses. The experience of selecting frames and ordering lenses was very easy. The opticians worked with me to get me the best I could with my insurance. All in all, my pocket, and I, was very happy with the overall experience. I will be back! read more

This place restored my hope in Optometry. The Optometrist here are beyond knowledgeable, empathetic, kind, and truly work to do what's best for you. I was seen by a Resident Albert, Dr. Flom & Dr. Zimmerman. After seeing some of "The Best Optometrist" in out of the state of Ohio, from Cincinnati Eye Institute to John Hopkins, I had given up hope, and trust in anyone I saw for my eye conditions. These three professionals were honest, realistic, and explained things to me that other doctors couldn't /wouldn't. They took their time and did a thorough exam and testing on me. I left with a smile and for the first time in 9 years I felt like my condition wasn't the end all be all of my life. Words will never be able to express my gratitude to them. I look forward to my next visit with them, and to finally being able to move forward. read more

Well, I remained civil since these were either women or students or both. But now that the dust has settled, I'm out $145 and in the same situation where I now need to find another 'real' eye doctor who knows what they're doing. The first student did a long battery of tests, which is fine and could be a good thing, but he didn't communicate any of his 'findings' and just kept them secret I guess for his own studies. This seems to be par for the 21st century American healthcare system. They poke and prod and analyze but keep it all a secret for themselves unless you sign a litany of release forms to get access to your records. He also scratched the %#$& out of my glasses when he took them to get a reading. I know because I clean them every day and have a photographic inventory. He also misled me to think he was prescribing single vision contacts which I learned later at the second visit are actually multifocals. The second visit (follow-up) was with a new set of students who I know more than. I'm still fighting with eye strain and contrary to their simplistic diagnosis, it's not due to not blinking enough or needing to look away every 20 minutes or needing eye drops. Give me a break. This is deeper and dealing with either power or exophoria. Either way, the contacts they feel I needed give me horrible eye strain so I'm back to square one because I've exhausted their know-how and they're not going to listen to my feedback no matter how much they say they will. They also probably don't want to invest in another trial pair or God forbid, pairs. These are students but I've had fully certified doctors who don't harbor the brain power to go beyond simply maximizing each eye's clarity and have the insight to scale back the cylinder if there is eye strain. And they wonder why we have to self-diagnose and buy cheap online. So don't expect any breakthroughs at the student lab but do expect to have your intelligence insulted. read more

I'm an OSU employee so I'm a bit impartial to utilizing services that are provided to us as employees who carry the healthy plan. I had been experiencing blurred vision, strained eyes and other issues and decided to make an appointment. I was able to get in quickly and early in the morning. I was checked in and quickly greeted by the student who would be completing my exam. Having worked with the medical students in a previous job, this was not an issue for me. I was also seen by one of the doctors, Dr. Yuhas. He came in with suggestions for the student several times and checked her work on the exam. He had a bit of a different bedside manner than the student and their interactions sometimes made me feel a bit awkward. But I realize this is a teaching environment. In the end I needed glasses, as well as eye drops and decided to order frames from the glasses gallery. I will probably be using this service again as its convenient and other than the glasses, didn't cost me a dime as an employee. read more
