There is creek running through several area through the trail, but the time we were here in Autumn, it's mostly dry. It's close to home and it's trails offer an amazing workout. Bender Mountain Preserve has many trails some that go along the creek bed, with others that are much more difficult, climbing up to a 45 degree incline. Once up top there is an amazing view overlooking the Ohio River Valley and Kentucky. Bender Mountain Preserve is more hiking trails than a standard park. It's very remote and even during peak times you may only see a hand full of other hikers. Plus dog friendly!!

The road in here is about a mile long, and it's VERY narrow - so narrow that I suspect it would be dangerous if you run into someone driving in the opposite direction... True to its name, this place has some fairly dense woods, and it's also got a fair number of hills. You'll find trailmaps for the taking inside the park, and you'd be wise to bring bug spray ;-)

One trail had pages from a children's book on signs as you went along the path, which was cute. Like others have said, it's not always very intuitive which trail you're on. I absolutely love this park and I'm always pleasantly surprised every time I visit. There's so much…read moreto do, and it somehow keeps feeling new no matter how many times I come back. It's perfect for getting together with friends, with multiple gathering areas and even rentable spaces. I've seen people taking engagement photos here, hosting weddings, and I even did my own graduation pictures here. It really is such a beautiful setting for special moments. One thing that always surprises me is how big it is. There are genuine hiking trails that wind through the woods, which is amazing for a park so close to the city. It's also great for birding, and I often see people playing frisbee, walking their dogs, or just enjoying a peaceful walk. The native plants and flowers are so well maintained, and there are so many little tucked away spots where you can sit with friends or a partner and enjoy a quiet, private moment. It's an absolutely beautiful park in a great area, and I can't recommend it enough.

I knew I needed to update this review after hiking some of the trails in order to escape my own…read morehome during COVID-19. I've long been a fan of Mt. Airy Forest for how untouched it feels. On a run that turned into a walk (cause homegirl needs to run more, apparently), I was able to walk a couple of trails. Both of them were pretty well maintained. I will say that if you're hiking within a day or two of rain, wear hiking boots or prepare to get your shoes muddy. I have to imagine that these trails are a little muddy more often than they are not. As long as it isn't too wet thought you can relatively easily jump and skip around the muddiest parts to keep your shoes clean. If you don't want to get muddy at all, there's tons of pavement to walk and some areas are blocked off to traffic. During Covid-19, it was great to see folks out and about enjoying the great outdoors. I have always wanted to give disc golf a try and definitely want to make plans to come try out the course at Mt. Airy Forest.

The treehouse was pretty cool to see and near the treehouse was where we started our hike. Plenty of ups and downs on the trail that we went on. I'm not sure if I struggle at following the trail signs, but went the wrong way a couple times and think that the trail that we were trying to follow had multiple names. All was fine though, got to do a bit more exploring. The creek is pretty dried up. I would have liked more signage for hiking trailheads at the entrance of the park, so head to the left (as if you're going to the treehouse) at the entrance if you want to hike. Disc golf looks like it'd be really good here, I hope to come back and try it out.

It is pretty well shaded so got a bit of a break from the heat. Trails are well maintained (someone brought a lot of mulch in) and pretty well marked by the street to which they lead. If you love tree and plants (including poison ivy) there is a lot to take in. We saw plenty of bugs and a little toad but not much other wildlife. We heard birds and sirens (not too far away from the city). The trail in has a decline but the rest of the trail is mostly steeper inclines. There are steps at places but they are pretty steel which could be limiting for some. Overall this is a well maintained hiking trail in the middle of a city.

Save your energy for the end! I'd say this is a beginner to moderate trails, since some pathways are covered with roots or leaves which could be uneven or slippery. I met my Mother, nephew, niece and their children at McCullough Nature Preserve for a wonderful…read morenature walk. It is a lovely place with beautiful plants and trees (some very old), and interesting old architecture to explore. The trails that we took were clearly marked and easy. After the walk we sat at the covered tables socializing and recounting parts of our adventure to a new friend that we found sitting there upon our return. We had a great time.
