Didn't realize this place existed! Family from out of town new about it and wanted to go. There's 3 gift shops all with artists works for sale. The place was in between displays so there was little art on display. This place is associated with Winterfair for Columbus and Cincinnati. Anxious to go back again to see their new exhibits.

As stated by those before me, the name is quite deceiving. The very term "craft" to me conjurs up images of pieces inspired by Pinterest. That is definitely not what I found. The pieces on display were clearly created by highly skilled artists in a variety of mediums, everything from paper to glass to metal. Some pieces are for sale and for reasonable price points considering the time & talent investment. This is a bit of a hidden gem in that my boyfriend lives just a few miles away and we've passed by it for years completely unaware of its existence. It is now on my radar and I will be sure to add it to my regular gallery rotation. There is parking along the side of the building, but that can fill quickly for events.

At the Ohio Craft Museum I was half expecting to see exhibits of something like knitting or craft things you'd find at JoAnn's. I should have known better, being an artist. The exhibit was The Infinite Teapot. Teapots were all over the place and in every imaginable medium from common ones like clay and metal to less conventional ones like glass and thorny vines. Besides teapots, there was photography, screen printing and handmade jewelry. The Ohio Craft Museum was put together by the Ohio Arts Council by money from taxes and is for the purpose of encouraging growth, economically but also in knowledge and cultural understanding from education. Kudos for supporting the arts and local artists! Membership is available for individuals and families. The individual membership is an annual cost of $20 and the family cost is only $5 more and includes a host of benefits such as free admission to events like Columbus and Greater Cincinnati Winterfairs, discounts on tickets and registrations for more events, previewing for Gifts of the Craftsmen, and early notification of exhibitions and education programs. The museum also hosts craft making events. For example, on February 1, 2009 artist Tracy Reiger led children supervised by adults in a Mad Hatter's Tea Party where they created funny hats like the mad hatter would wear. The museum is normally closed on the weekends, but during exhibitions it is open on Saturday and Sunday from 1pm to 4pm.

I get the craving of an art show sometimes and this is a great little place to go. Winterfair artists sell some things here!

We visited to try out the Splatter Studio, which is pretty much what it sounds like: it's a studio that you can visit to make splatter paintings. We got outfitted with goggles, aprons and other protective gear, then headed into a room with lots of neon paint and a few blank canvases. The lights were turned off, the music was turned on, and were allowed to splatter and throw paint against the canvases to create our own individual paintings. It was a therapeutic -- and fun, and messy -- experience for my whole family. After we were done, we got to take home our artwork that we had created together. I don't usually like to make a mess, so splatter painting is not an activity that I usually would have sought out myself. But I'm glad that I tried it! Like I said, it was very cathartic and therapeutic. Slinging paint against a wall is a big stress reliever, believe it or not. And my kids, who are used to people telling them not to get messy and throw things, were super excited to get messy and throw things. This was a fun art activity for everyone. The owner of Young at Art, Karla, is a local art teacher, which is really neat. Along with the splatter studio, she also offers art classes and art lessons, as well as canvas painting parties. Karla is very friendly and made us feel at home in her studio during our painting session. If you're looking for a unique art activity for all ages, you need to visit Young at Art and try the splatter studio.

Given the time for teaching (roughly 30 minutes) and another 20 for cleaning up your station and washing everything you end up with roughly 40 minutes of spinning, much less than I initially expected. Would have loved more time or the ability to keep more than one piece given the price. Also employees were rude during pottery pickup

There are date night classes for two and a one time sampler class. Plus, if you've already been to a class there's the option to book an open studio. Which is a spot to come and create. You can also rent out the studio for small groups. I booked my wife a one off Sunday class. Unfortunately, something came up and she was unable to attend so I went in her space. I am glad that I went it was a delightful way to spend a Sunday! The try-it class fee includes one fired & glazed finished piece. (There is the option to purchase other creations as well.) The instructor for the one off Sunday class was great. They explained and showed the process we would take before giving us space to create at our own stations. The showing was great for me as I am the type of person who learns by doing so being able to see the wheel in action, see the movements that change the shape of the clay, and the tools that were going to be used set me up for success when it comes to (attempting) to create on the wheel. Each station had a wheel, many sections of pre-cut ready to be thrown clay, water, tools that could be used, and a posted reminder of the process of creation. (I appreciated this as it gave me something to refer to as I was attempting to create a masterpiece!) During the class time the instructor was walking about offering help, and sharing tips to aid in the creation of our pieces. After creation, you help clean up your station, and choose the glaze color for your creation. Glaze options were blue, green, and red. At the time of this class the turn around time from creation to glazed, fired, and ready to be picked up was four weeks from the class date. ------ Previous to this class I hadn't used a wheel in well over 25 years. (And that was only once or twice in art classes in elementary and middle! So nothing that would give me considerable skills.) I am planning on booking one of the couple classes so that the wife and I can create together. All in all, I highly recommend checking out the offerings at Bareclay and booking a class if you are able! Nice space to try out something new or to get back into something you enjoyed in a comfortable and friendly environment.
