The Barking Birch Pet Lodge

The Barking Birch Pet Lodge

I cannot believe no one has yelped The Barking Birch yet! If I could give them 5 million stars I…read morewould. I used to work in the pet care industry so I know what to look for, and before I worked in pet care, I traveled a lot & was a client. I have had some nightmare-ish experiences with other boarding places, such as forgetting to administer heart medicine multiple days to 3rd degree sunburns from letting my boy be outside all day long to nearly losing my pittie from an allergic reaction (staff had to throw water on her to wake her up, she was so out of it & nonresponsive I had to rush her to the emergency vet.) So with that said, believe me when I say I am picky now as to who cares for my fur kids. The owners of The Barking Birch are amazing. They are good people, trustworthy & know a lot about dogs & love dogs. But it's not just enough to love dogs to do this work, it takes knowledge about dog breeds & skill reading body language, which the owners have. It is not easy sometimes supervising a playgroup of dogs, they are like toddlers! They have multiple huge play areas to separate by personality & lots of toys & playground equipment. What I like is that there's play time, nap time, then more playtime before bed. Nap time is important because some dogs get too worked up and/or cranky with all day constant play. I also love that the dogs sleep on comfy cots in their individual suites rather than an open sleep arrangement that's becoming more popular. They can rest well & are safe tucked in their suites. Most importantly, your dog will not just be one of 75 or 100 dogs like the bigger places. They get one-on-one attention which is so important to me. I don't worry a bit when I leave them, which is HUGE for me, because I can be kind of a control freak when it comes to my kiddos. My dogs tell me that they love this place too, because whenever I arrive to pick them up, they could care less about coming home with me! Last time, they both saw me & my girl was like oh hai ma & jumped on a chair to relax & my boy grabbed a toy & paw'ed the door to his suite open to accomplish his mission of stealing all the toys from the others, then destroying said toys. They were just like cool! Mom's here. I felt like my dogs were part of their family. What else could you ask for?! Another plus is they post lots of pics online (FB) which I love. I'm sort of obsessed with their page. Such cute silly pics! Both of my dogs have used their spa several times for baths & nail trims and my girl had the best pedicure ever. I meant to tell them this but I forgot! And she is not a fan of nail trims! There are hardly any places like The Barking Birch. They are unique & such a find! Even if I move to Mpls, I will still drive 1.5 hours to board my dogs here.

Companions Animal Hospital

I've been generally very happy with the level of care at Companions Animal Hospital. The staff is…read moreknowledgeable, compassionate, and thorough, and I appreciate that they are AAHA accredited -- something only a small percentage of clinics achieve. That accreditation really matters when it comes to emergencies or situations requiring surgery, because it means they follow strict standards for safety, anesthesia, cleanliness, diagnostics, and medical protocols. If you want top‑tier care for serious or urgent issues, this is absolutely the place to be. I was offered one of their Canine Wellness Packages, and while the flyer was helpful, I didn't receive much detail about the terms, conditions, or exclusions beyond what was printed. I like to fully understand what I'm signing up for, especially when it comes to annual plans. I purchased the $432 Wellness Package, which includes two comprehensive wellness exams, two intestinal parasite screenings, internal organ function screening, and 5% off additional services. The flyer shows there is also a $663 Enhanced Package, but I wasn't offered that option during my visit. For reference, I spent $3,557.73 last year on my middle‑aged chiweenie, and the wellness plan saved me $1,404.59 -- which is impressive for a healthy dog with no chronic conditions. She only had a few minor issues like diarrhea from eating something she shouldn't have. I can see how this plan might be even more valuable for dogs with chronic medical needs, but for my situation, it was still a meaningful savings. Companions also accepts direct pay from Trupanion, which makes expensive emergencies far less stressful because you don't have to pay everything upfront. They also accept CareCredit, which is helpful if you need assistance with payments. I also really like their app -- being able to chat with staff and book appointments directly is incredibly convenient. That said, due to financial reasons, I'll only be bringing my dog to Companions for true emergencies going forward. For routine vaccinations and annual checkups, I recommend looking into a prepaid plan through Petco's Vital Care Premier, which offers unlimited exams and discounted vaccinations at a much lower cost. Overall, Companions Animal Hospital provides excellent care, especially for emergencies or complex medical needs. Their AAHA accreditation gives me confidence, and their staff has always treated my dog with kindness and professionalism.

This clinic obviously cares about the bigger picture...helping animals in need over making big bucks. That is the type of business I like to see supported by animal lovers.
