As a new mom, there are lots of things you think about: Am I doing this right? What is wrong? Why is this happening? Does anyone else experience this? Visiting Lisa D. Kehoe was not a reassuring experience for me, and I would caution others to seek help elsewhere. First, my baby is only in cloth diapers or a specific brand of natural diapers so he is not exposed to chemicals, and the first thing she does is change my son into one of her own (cheap brand) disposables to check his weight, without asking me at all. I merely thought she was taking him to put him on the scale, but she started undressing him immediately, without considering that I may want something different. Now, before you all tell me why she was changing his diaper, let me tell you that she could have just asked me for one of my disposables to set the weight on the scale. It's not like the giant diaper bag I've been toting around is empty!!! Next, instead of listening to my concerns about dairy being a possible culprit, she refused to listen to me, and told me I was doing it wrong. It was my fault he was not nursing long enough! (Again, not encouraging to a new mom) she refused to listen when I told her that he was in the middle of a growth spurt and eating every single hour on the hour. In fact, he had just eaten 25 minutes before arriving to her office in the basement of her house, but even after repeatedly telling Lisa this, she did not listen. I explained to Lisa, that from the research I had read (good, evidence-based research) I was seeing the signs of a dairy allergy or intolerance. Lisa said that it was not even a possibility, and went on again to tell me that she knew best and that it was my fault for not making him nurse long enough and that it was a classic case of not getting enough hind milk. Is it possible she is unaware of what nursing-on-demand means? Anyway, I left the appointment feeling defeated and confused. Surely I had read the research and the symptoms correctly! But as a new mom, sometimes you want to hear it from another person, instead of a study. The very next day, I contacted a woman I used to nanny for that had been an IBCLC for many years. My friend lives two hours away, and during the winter months with a newborn, traveling was out of the question. So, I emailed my IBCLC friend with my concerns and she immediately addressed all of them. She addressed them with love and encouragement--not something Lisa D. Kehoe is equipped to do it seems. In addition to addressing my concerns, my IBCLC friend also sent me numerous research articles refuting the 'not enough hindmilk' diagnoses Lisa had given me. She also said that I was most likely correct in my assessment of a dairy intolerance and encouraged me to cut it out entirely for at least 3 weeks. I noticed a difference in my son the very next day! Thank God for a health practitioner that listened to me, but that practitioner was not Lisa D. Kehoe. As a side note, not regarding my son, I have a rule to not trust people who bash other practitioners (Lisa D. Kehoe continuously told me that the hospital lactation consultants were not very good) and who do not listen to me. I am so happy that I did not listen to Lisa and sought a second opinion. read more
