Edit: I took this down to two stars. I got this morning to no hot water. Last night my wife said she got lukewarm water for her shower. Hot water is an expectation for any hotel and especially a place that clams it's a "luxury resort". If you look over my review catalogue you will see I give out 4/5 star reviews fairly regularly and 1/2 stars is rare for me. This was a disappointment from Belterra.

The hotel is delightful: elegant inside - nice common spaces, quiet elevators. Our only complaint was that breakfasts on weekday end at 9 am. While this makes sense for business travelers, a lot of the folks staying here, based on who was at breakfast at 8:45 am, were tourists. The rooms are relatively clean, and the staff do their best to keep all areas of the hotel as clean as they can. My room for the most part was clean with some minor stains on the carpet. The bathroom was spotless and the room wifi was easy to connect to and had a good signal that allowed me to surf, stream and connect to work through a VPN. The fitness centre is small and cramped and lacks modern equipment. Some of the machines were out of service during my stay. The dial for the heating and AC unit was broken and the TV had limited channels. The breakfast is standard IHG Holiday food which they change up daily offering hot and cold choices ei. bacon one day and sausage and gravy the next. We have been IHG Reward members since 2008 and are Platinum members. We often book through the App…read more Tonight we had the worst check-in experience we have ever had at an IHG hotel. The staff member could not find our reservation in their computer. We booked the room at 8:58 PM. We even gave them our confirmation # from the email we got. Still nothing. Another staff member checked their computer and found our name in it, but still claimed their was no reservation in their system. We were next asked to provide our membership number. Even though we showed them the number on our App, we were told the number was showing as invalid. They said they could book us a room, even though the app and email clearly showed we had booked a room in their hotel. We had to pay for the room they booked us. Now we will have to sort out being double charged. It was ironic we had to initial that if we smoked in our room we would have to pay $150 cleaning fee, as the lobby reeked of cigarette smoke. There were guests with the exterior doors at the end of the hallway propped open. They were smoking on the stoop. It took over 15 minutes to finally get a room at 10:30 at night, by the time we were done our eyes and throats were burning from the smoke coming down the hallways through the lobby. No apologies were made to us, we probably won't receive our rewards points as they claimed our number was invalid. Time for some staff customer service training on how to still make guests feel valued even when things go wrong.

Typically we stay for more than one night and the town seemed nice enough for a longer stay. JLD Lanier owner architect of this B&B and also the Lanier Mansion. Unfortunately we did not have time to stop by that historic site. The house has some history as a stop on the Underground RR according to the innkeeper. You can have a nice quiet weekend or crazy weekend. Your choice. The casino is nearby and a few bars. Whatever you do, stay at the Empire House. It takes you back in time with decor in the rooms. And, price is amazingly bc affordable. Some rooms have kitchenette's. Some are like a small apartment to accommodate 5-6 persons. Call ahead and plan ahead, the rooms go fast.
