Balcony view

The Hillside is in a good location to the historic district. I found the staff to be friendly enough and the room clean. The balcony had a nice view of the lights of the bridge and Main Street at night, not so much of a view during the day. The bed and pillows were comfortable. The AC didn't cool the room very quickly (I like it cold!) but I always supplement with a fan anyway for the white noise. At some point during the night it reached a temp I was comfortable with. Downside: no soap, I had to use shampoo to wash with. They has a shower cap and even a sewing kit so I assume the lack of soap was just an oversight. Also, the balcony door did not lock. I don't expect the average hotel guest to have the acrobatic skills to get over to the next balcony but being a single woman staying there I would have felt more comfortable with a locked door. All in all, it was a good stay and if I am in the area again I would have no problem staying there again.

Suite, 1 King with Jetted Tub and Panoramic River Room 318 MAKE SURE YOU AREN'T CHARGED TWICE!!! The room was very nice with a big fireplace and nice sized whirlpool tub. The bed was comfortable, breakfast was decent and the balcony view was really nice. BUT my card was charged twice and we had to cancel plans until it was resolved the next morning. Huge bummer and inconvenience.

Double Room w/Two Queen Beds

I truly cannot say enough wonderful things about my experience with my Oct 13 stay. From the beginning experience with Julie and my multiple changes (on my end) of my reservation, to Patty with her gracious advice on places to get delivery or carry out food since my elderly father was not up to dining out. The customer service has been way above and beyond!!! Julie was aware I was bringing my father down for a stay as a walk down memory lane from happier days with my mom. When I switched dates because of a change in the forecast, the same type of room was not available. Julie guided me through the best options, and might I add with great patience. Later, a cancelation occurred for a Double room w/two Queen beds and she kindly changed my reservation for me again. Not only did we get a Queen double, she put us on the 3rd floor (room#310) near the elevator to not tire my dad too much. Top floor with a spectacular view of the Bridge to the city. As we drove up and entered the Hillside Inn I knew instantaneously I had made a great decision booking a room at this charming historic Hotel. The lobby was welcoming with Halloween decor and an all around cheery feel. Much to my delight I learned while checking in that my helpful voice on the phone for multiple calls on my reservation change was Julie now behind the desk in person. She was as lovely during check in as she was on the phone. The room was immaculately clean including the bathroom and our private balcony. The room was tastefully decorated and modern with the wood floors from the renovation. The balcony was spacious, comfortable with rocking patio chairs and even a ceiling fan to keep air moving. During the evening I interacted with Patty several times as I was inquiring about dining and various questions. She went out of her way to try and help me knowing I was catering to my father's needs. I travel to the DC area frequently with my healthcare advocating and I often seek out Boutique Hotels, along with the upscale large hotels. I have no doubt if this lovely hotel was in a Metro area the price would be several hundred per evening with the caliber of appointments to the room and personal service. One would think the two ladies helping me were full time concierge assistants, but here at the Hillside they do it all.... and I might add very well. If you are coming to Madison I cannot strongly suggest enough that you choose the Hilltop Inn, you will not be disappointed.

Fog off the Ohio River over Downton Madison

This is a nice place to stay. It has a private balcony so you can see the Ohio River. The deluxe continental breakfast was great. The room was clean. The only issue besides my husband snoring like a grizzly bear was the traffic noise.

I have been working in the hotel industry as a supervising front Desk Agent and Night Auditor for 20 years. So I know a few things. I've seen the great managers and owners that understand the meaning of hospitality and the ones who just want your money and want to offer very little in the way of going the extra mile so you'll return and or give positive feedback. First see attached pictures of the floors of my nearly $175 per night room. Seriously rooms should be cleaner for this price at a run down outdated hotel. Second the hubby and I ended up arriving a little earlier than expected and asked for an early check in. We were flat out refused! I would have paid a little extra even. We kept getting met with the response we don't have anything ready until 3, 2:30 maybe. Funny thing is and I pointed this out they never asked my name or my room type to check and see. Also as it was 12pm and check out was 11am let me tell you what we do at my hotel. We communicate with housekeeping about a checked out room of that room type a guest has departed from. Let them know we have a guest requesting an early check in and have them start that room next. We may not be able to check the guest in at the moment, but we do get them in with in and hour or so. IT DOES NOT TAKE OVER 3 HOURS TO CLEAN A ROOM. If it does it should be clean then!!!! They kept saying housekeeping is in the halls??? What? So? They were "in the halls" after 3, so your point? The lady was incredibly snarky and when I said ok I see why they have some bad reviews now, she said okay and thank you super sarcastic. It is things like that they go the extra mile and provide good customer service in a hospitality industry for a guest who had one of the most expensive jacuzzi suites at your hotel. I come to Madison often and I ill not be back and I have recommended more than a few family member visit. This will not be a recommended hotel. The room next door also had a constant barking dog and they did nothing about it.

Wonderful place to stay from the customer service to the room to the fresh towels. The balcony and the view is my favorite! It's breath taking the view! Yes I would highly recommend this place the amenities have been updated the actual building so totally cool and old. We loved it!

This was an interesting stay of a hotel. Reserved this place to visit some family nearby. The room was about what you would expect. Cinder block walls. The heat in the building is centrally controlled by a boiler we found out and it was very hot in our room which led to us having the big sliding glass door open all night. This was recommended to us by the staff. They did got get us a fan from the basement though. This made it really loud because all the noise from the bridge and roads... It's like the locals treat it like a drag strip. Seriously. All night it sounds like people are drag racing outside. The bedding wasn't awesome. One comforter had cigarette burn holes in it. The beds were stiff. I didn't sleep well at all They did allow pets which is a huge plus for us. We're very thankful to them for this.

The fan they gave us because it didn't have Ac. room 104

I was so excited to stay at this hotel. My excitement didn't last long. I did not get much sleep, because the Ac didn't work and it was 60 degrees outside. What hotel offers you a 1980's fan because of the air situation. I was sweating laying in bed. Also, The bed was so squeaky. Everytime I would moved in bed I would wake up by the noise of the bed. The general manager didn't even reach out to apologize for the inconvenience we had. I was very disappointed!

Small town of Madison, the Ohio river and hillside of Kentucky

We stayed here for one night. We were attending a 5k across the river in Kentucky. The hotel is old and feels kinda creepy, but that's what we loved about it!!! You can feel the history surrounding the place when you're driving up the winding driveway. We took the early 1900s steps out front to get to Main Street. The lady at the front desk was very friendly and accommodating. They offer a pretty decent breakfast. The room has a beautiful view from the large balcony overlooking the Ohio and Kentucky. I would definitely stay here again!!!

Update: We are here again! First time in the Queen Bed Jacuzzi Suite! We love it!! Also, the complimentary robes are a nice touch... Two words: THE VIEW!! My parents used to stop here on the way to/from Jamestown, TN... It was a great place to stay then and is still a great place to stay now! Still a little dated but they seem to be making some effort to update... Our room and bathroom were clean and did not smell of smoke. Walls are not thin. Bed is comfortable and the pillows are decent. The balcony is absolutely the best part!! (We always stay on the third floor!) The staff have always been friendly and welcoming. I do think their weekend rate is a bit high, but can understand somewhat because of the view offered... The breakfast is pretty basic and the sausage is horrible. Downtown offers a lot of fun things to do/see. There is great food close by. Clifty Falls is a 3 minute drive away. We will be back!

The hotel staff are all so friendly and helpful! The breakfast is really tasty and has a lot of great options! The views of the river are breathtaking and so peaceful! We had a phenomenal stay!!!

We thought we had reserved directly through Marriott but she said third parties often mimic the original hotel's websites. (Sure fooled us! We had no idea this could happen.) Despite that, she helped us get a river view room, about which we had telephoned the front desk earlier in the week, even though it was not the room to which we were assigned on arrival. This lady was VERY helpful and certainly represented Marriott well. The room she assigned us was a king studio and was lovely, and it DID have a river view. The hotel is delightful: elegant inside - nice common spaces, quiet elevators. Our only complaint was that breakfasts on weekday end at 9 am. While this makes sense for business travelers, a lot of the folks staying here, based on who was at breakfast at 8:45 am, were tourists. It would be nice if Breakfast were open until 9:30 or even 10 AM, as we have found to be the case at other (equivalent) hotels at which we stayed on this trip. Very nice hotel. We will return.

We rent the whole house for Thanksgiving weekend. The location is great. It's secluded and scenic but very close to downtown Madison, the hilltop area and Clifty Falls. The three guest rooms are large, each with at least one king sized bed. Each of the three bedrooms has its own private bathroom. My parents stay in the Riverview room, with - you guessed it - spectacular views of the Ohio River valley. My sister stays in the Independence Room which has two beds (one king and one queen) which let's their young kids have their own bed but be close to mom and dad. My brother stays in the Sunshine room. We don't always have her serve breakfast, but I have been there for her breakfasts before and they are generous and a good selection of proteins and fruits and sweets. My local family comes out and we cook and celebrate Thanksgiving and black Friday together. The great room (open concept kitchen, dining room, and living room with a gas fireplace) is large enough for the biggest crazy family gathering. Kids run around like wild people, adults eat, drink, and are merry! The owner, Kathy, is friendly, helpful and super sweet. She always has spare tin foil or extra milk or whatever we need. This is a great spot for families, couples, girls weekends, a place to stay during great Madison events, and everything else!

They have what I would consider one of the best views in all of Madison, Indiana. It's right up the hill from Clifty Falls and very near to Hanover College, overlooking the beautiful Ohio River. When I was a student at HC, my parents stayed here all of the time, and I would highly recommend it to current parents visiting their kids. It's near to campus but also a bit of a retreat of its own. Very convenient to historic downtown Madison as well. The three rooms (and a fourth little "game room") are very well-appointed, and the kitchen and great room are perfect for relaxing and entertaining friends. The porch view is so relaxing. Kathy, the proprietor is one of the kindest people alive. I graduated from Hanover a long time ago, but my parents still go here to vacation because they love it. The last time they stayed here, they got into a car accident while they were driving in town, and they had Kathy call the local police for them. She even offered to pick up the accident report for them when they had to leave town before it was ready. After my wedding party, Kathy packed up a bunch of the leftover food for me and my husband in a little cooler that we could take on our honeymoon. We didn't ask her to do this, but it really made our trip more special. She goes above and beyond for her guests, and her small touches of thoughtfulness will stick with you!
