At six o'clock in the morning they must have had a steam release valve activate several times. Sounded like a hot air balloon being filled. Do yourself a favor and wake up early enough to watch the sunrise from the patio (if the weather is nice) or from the rocking chairs in the glass hallway. This is a nice place to visit for a get-a-way. All the employees we encountered we polite and helpful. If you stay at the inn you should get a room on the river side. The view of the Ohio River and of Madison is stunning. Simply adding to the experience. The room was pleasant and spacious. It is worth noting that there were no USB ports in the room, so be sure to bring electrical plugs. The bathroom was also spacious and had been updated. The room also comes with a mini fridge and sink. The common areas of the Inn are also nice, though at times dated. Which can be nice if striving to get away from it all. There are lots of seating areas on the back patio to relax and enjoy the view. They said you could carry out food from the restaurant and eat outside. Had breakfast. Took a while (not a problem for us), and it was sort of cold by the time it arrived. Not so cold as to complain. It was put together well. They charge $2.95 for a bad cup of coffee, and don't have real dairy-based creamer (ask for milk, which is as good as it gets). There is not an extensive selection but it will meet most people's tastes if you're not vegan. Meat eaters and those that like carbohydrate rushes can get their fix. Service was good, and the view is stellar. A little overpriced, but not bad for a state park inn. read more

This is definitely an older facility. Do not come expecting four star amenities or a four star experience. Overall the appearance is campground like, reminds you that you are in a state park! The majority of the staff are really nice with the exception of 1 lady. The view from patio of the room is really nice and beautiful of the Ohio River. The lights of Madison are pretty at night. The spa was nice for the 5 minutes I was allowed in and the kids all seemed to enjoy the big pool. Parking is right outside the door but you have to go inside the lobby and walk all the way around to the building your room is in. I see minor blemishes on the walls, ceiling, floors etc. there was an ant trap with ants in it. The beds don't come with blankets??? Or ours didn't at least. The beds also suck. My body hurts now. If you bring your own pillows, blankets, cleaning supplies and like to have fun in nature then come! If not, I'd suggest another vacation. This was $190 a night and just wow. read more

I'm going with four stars here, but it's not without a few minor complaints. First... the positives. We stayed here in a double bed room with another couple. The rooms are nice enough(but not really that luxurious). Pillows galore! I think every limb can have its own pillow of relaxation. It's also a clean inn. Not a spot in the living area or bathroom... well done cleaning staff. The entire inn itself is cool. Plenty of common areas to relax and sit. Plenty of other spots to watch the sun come up or in our case, the fog float off the river while it rained all day. Vending machines. A coffee machine. All of the rooms seem to have a view(at least in the wing we stayed in). That view is comprised of a river, grass, a small patio, and the much desired smoke stacks. This inn makes the inn restaurant easy to visit because it's connected. There is also an indoor pool along with a hot tub which surprisingly no one was using during my 24 hours there. Next time Clifty.. next time. There's a small gift shop near the front desk with some cool things. The staff was nice. Clifty Inn also has wi-fi and plenty of in-wall fireplaces. If it's chilly on your visit, have a seat by one of the fireplaces and surf the web. There are also other rooms. I suppose you would call them meeting rooms? If you have a group or company retreat here... these rooms are helpful. After lunch one day, my favorite lady and I walked around (inside) the place. We knocked out some serious distance while walking around for that 45 minutes to 1 hour! The way the inn is setup makes for an easy exercise walk... down a hall, up the stairs, down the next hall, up the stairs, down another all, repeat, and then on to the other wing, and repeat. My only two peeves come with the trash can in the room and the beds. There is only one trash can.. and it's in the bathroom! There needs to be a trash can in the main area or at least under the counter where the kitchen area is. There are also trash cans in strategically placed parts of the inn, but never where you need them. The other peeve is with the beds. I didn't notice it at first, but my girlfriend did. We were able to go into other rooms because we were there with a larger group. Between the two beds in our room and one of the beds in the other room... none of them were of the same firmness or softness. Bed consistency varies here which might be why there's no shortage of pillows in each room. read more

Made a last minute decision to get away for the weekend with my husband and this is where we ended up. If you're looking for a spot to get away from the craziness of life for a day or two, I would recommend this place. The rooms are very dated and worn out and You can tell they haven't changed since they were probably built. However, everything was clean and staff was friendly. The hotel itself is beautiful and has some great spots to hang out and watch the river. We visited the restaurant for both lunch and dinner and enjoyed both of our meals. read more

Found bed bugs in the room, confronted front desk, they switched our rooms but refused to either pay for our clothes to be cleaned or allow us to use the washers and dryers on site to not spread the bugs to the new room or even my home. Pretty much stated that the possible bugs in our clothes from their room was not their problem. Informed them that if bed bugs get spread to my home they will be taken to court. read more

The Clifty Inn is a great spot. You can't beat the access to hiking and nature, especially considering how close it is to historic downtown Madison. Best of both worlds for sure. The pool is maintained by the park, not the hotel, but access is granted by staying. My father in law is in a wheel chair, which makes vacationing more difficult than you'd imagine. The pool and hot tub are amazing, because not only doesn't he have to miss out on anything, it's heated. A pool after my own heart. The restaurant has many options, but it has its own Yelp page, so I won't factor it in here. The suite is quite nice. I'm not sure on the price difference, but we got two rooms, one with the two beds and the suite has the nice tub and couch and kitchenette. We ended up hanging there comfortably. We felt good about letting the toddlers run the halls playing zombie, because the staff was very friendly. read more

I had booked a room for two employees attending a conference there. Boiler issue per the front desk as their room was 91 degrees. When I called today to speak with management, Renee told me she would look into it. She called me back and was immediately defensive regarding her employees with no apology that the room was extremely warm and was not taken care of. Instead of giving a full refund she only would give us a $25.00 discount. I was still speaking to her about the lack of helpfulness from her front desk and she hung up on me. I will suggest that next conference is not held there with this type of treatment of out of state guest. read more

The inn has a "boiler issue" and my room on Tuesday February 27 2024 had a temperature of 96 degrees. This was after we tried to turn the air on without any coolness coming out. When I spoke to the front desk we received no apology, no attemp to rectify the heat in the room. We had to request fans.....which were old and dirty. I visited the Clifty Inn this weekend for a choir retreat. They were very accommodating with our large group. The rooms were comfortable. I wasn't in the room much...there was an awful lot of rehearsing going on for us, but I slept very well. The food was pretty good and the waitstaff, most of them, were pleasant and on the ball. The room provided for us to rehearse in was great for our use, as was the room provided for socializing after our late rehearsal. Overall a good stay. I wish I'd had more time to explore the park...next time. read more

We had reservations for one night, checked in at 6pm and was checked out of that place by 6:40pm. The elevator didn't work, we were on the 2nd floor, not that big of a deal. Walked into our room , room was very hot, no AC running. Turned on the AC and only warm air was coming out of it. Called front desk, we were told it was on a boiler system and had to be turned off for 30 minutes and then turned back on. It was already turned off when we entered the room and we turned it on to start to run the air, there was no need to turn it off and try again and wait 30 minutes in a hot room. The lobby air was working fine and it was plenty cold when we asked for our money back. She also told us there were fans in the room and the windows opened for air. It was in the low 90's and we're supposed to open our windows if the air wasn't working?...wrong. We ended up leaving, we payed $250 to stay one night and she thinks werd suppose to open the windows if it gets too hot, she's crazy. read more

When I went in to check the status of our orders, I noticed the waitress had a card game on her computer screen at the cash register. Not the cleanest.. Stayed in a suite and our plates and cups (although arranged into a place setting on the table) were noticably dirty. The bathroom was beautiful, but not well cleaned. There were around 15 dead beetles on the windowsill. none of these things were a huge problem it Just seems like the cleaning between guests was very quick and careless. Still, the staff were incredibly nice and accommodating and helped us through all the issues we had. The pool was great. The views were stunning if you ignore the power plant nearby. The restaurant was average but had very few vegetarian options. Overall, a good experience but could have been better. read more

We were nervous after reading a 2018 review that mentioned bed bugs, but our room was perfectly fine. It is a little strange to have a state park inn that overlooks a massive power plant. I wondered how healthy that is for people that work at the park full-time. The room itself was good sized, with two large beds, each with four massive pillows. The furnishings are obviously decades old, and beginning to show wear and tear. The towels are not the quality you will be used to if you've stayed in decent hotels, but they were clean. The rug on the other hand was at least 20 years old and looked every bit of it. This is a hotel that could use an infusion of cash to get it up to date. The pool was fantastic, and Madison is the most charming town in the state, so I highly recommend a visit. read more

Well this was my second stay at Clifty Inn, I stayed with my band way back in 2009, and I remember it being a very beautiful lodge nestled above the Ohio River in a beautiful forrest like setting of southern Indiana. Not much has changed since 2009, the rooms are still spacious and nice, but maybe could use a few touch ups here and there! The rooms over looking the river are great and I like how the lodge is all connected so if you want to go for lunch or brunch you never have to go outside if the weather is bad! I got to take my 10 month old son swimming for the first time, and he loved it.. The pool is nice and a perfect size. I had to work a bit while I was here so I enjoyed the Free WiFi and Coffee in the communal space outside the restaurant and I loved how their was a bridge tourney going on! This place is great, the staff is nice, the view is awesome, the food is good, and location can't be beat! Just a few touch up's here and there and this place would be a 5 star spot! read more

When I went to go visit my future college, we made reservations for the Super 8 since there were no Hiltons, Hyatts, or Sheratons where I was going to school. That should have been a sign, right? haha. One of the women in my college admissions office said that we shouldn't go to the Super 8 since it's shady and we should instead stay at Clifty Inn. She ended up helping us make reservations here instead of there. Thanks for the great advice, Mrs. Batman (yes that was her name)! We ended up staying here ever since. It is quite quaint and gave you that cabin-y, rustic feel that you would never get staying at the Super 8. It's about $120/night which isn't too bad but if you compare it to a Sheraton, where I can get it for about $130/night then you shouldn't come to Madison, Indiana. I actually enjoy it here because just getting to Clify Inn, you are taking winding roads and looking at the trees, waterfalls, trails, and sometimes a deer family! As far as amenities, you will find a heated swimming pool (equipped with wheelchair access), a small arcade room, and all the hot coffee/tea you feel like drinking. There are also tables where you can play checkers or chess or any other random board game. I love it! There also chairs in an enclosed lanai, where you can watch the Ohio River or if you're my son, watch the lawnmower mow the grass! It's nice to just relax and look out on the river front. I enjoy it immensely. The only bad part is that sometimes the rooms smell weird and it takes awhile to get used to. Our last room here smelled like a beauty salon, full of chemicals. Once we were here for about an hour, I got used to it but still, it's not all that pleasant. Employees here are very friendly! They let you know the best way to get to your room and get your bags in there. They can give you advice on where to eat and what to do (aka Lanier Mansion or Wal Mart). Without a doubt, this Inn is the nicest one we have experienced in Indiana yet. The desk clerk was great with suggestions and questions. I had apparently double booked and double paid for the deposit. She quickly figured it out and credited both deposits to one room. We had a River view Waterfall Suite and it was lovely. There is a large living area with a desk, couch, TV., tables and chairs. The small kitchenette with a coffee maker, microwave, mini fridge, table and chairs for 4 as well as dishes and flatware for 4 was very nice. Our bedroom had a king sized bed, TV, desk, bedside tables and chairs. The bathroom was huge! The vanity was tiny but there was a wall unit with shelf and drawers. I wish the toilet had a separate area but there is plenty of room if they ever want to make that upgrade. The shower is a way cool waterfall shower and there is a large whirlpool tub for soaking. The only negatives were that some of the tables were very worn as if they just ran out of money to put new ones in. All of the other furniture was very well maintained. We enjoyed the river view but some might find the power plant and barge traffic less than attractive. We loved it and found the night time lit-to-the-hilt smoke stacks and town of Madison enchanting. The pool is beautiful The pool and whirlpool (18 or over - Yes!) are clean and modern. I'm not a fan of the state park lodge restaurants. They don't serve beer or wine and the food is at best, mediocre. In all fairness, we did not eat at the restaurant so it may be better than our past experiences. In the late fall and winter the lodges are 2-for-1 Sunday through Thursday. Rate for the River view peaks at $192 and we paid $71 per night. There is enough to do in the winter if you are into nature and hiking. Everyone on the staff was wonderful. The staff alone gets 5 stars! All of the staff from housekeeping to the desk staff were warm and friendly. I give them 5 read more

LOVED our stay and accommodations in the State Park. They have only a few pet rooms and we were able to take our dog. He loved it! Due to having a pet, we had to stay in the old section. If we ever visit without him, we plan to stay in the newer section with a riverview. The room was clean, the towels plush, the fridge and microwave were a nice surprise. The front desk staff was pleasant and helpful. The patio area and fire-pit were fun. We did not eat at the lodge during our stay but we heard it was good. The Lodge is located near one of the park entrances so easy access to downtown Madison. We plan to return next Spring. read more

We try to come here about once a year and usually around Christmas time. The lodge is very nice with 2 large areas with fireplaces that are just gorgeous. The inn has a Christmas theme that is taken care of by a local winery called Lanther's winery which just happens to have one of the largest Christmas tree displays in the country. Back to the inn, the rooms are well appointed and the top floor rooms have balconies. The river view rooms have a great view of the Ohio river and a view of the town its near (Madison) which has several little shops that are interesting. Kind of a tourist town. In the park, there are hiking and biking trails and several waterfalls located throughout the park. Not all of them are breathtaking but it is very serene. I would definitely recommend this little park tucked along the Ohio about 50 miles west of Cincinnati and about 40 miles north east of Louisville. read more

BED BUGS! My family planned to spend the holiday weekend at the Inn. We like a non traditional Thanksgiving by hiking and being outdoors. We have a one year old so camping wasn't an option this year. Early this morning at 1:00am we were awoken by bugs crawling on us and the beds. I love staying here!! The rooms are very nice. Don't worry about not having enough pillows- they line up about four at least one each bed. The rooms, beds, and bathroom are absolutely spotless! I will warn that they use down pillows, for those, like me, who have an allergy! There is nothing like spending the day on the trails in Clifty Falls State Park and then coming back to your comfortable room with a view! My family has adopted Madison as our home away from home at thanksgiving and for the Christmas kick-off. The Clifty Inn is the perfect place to get away from Indianapolis and, depending on your mileage, less than a tank of gas away. The rooms at the Clifty Inn were renovated a few years ago. They include a sink and mini fridge, double beds, and a view of the Ohio river and the night lights of downtown that will knock your socks off. If you stay here, the staff all seem to be pretty friendly and there's 24 hour, unlimited free coffee. My only issue was that the wifi was really sluggish and the hot tub is always closed down. The restaurant is a great place to get fat or you can take a short drive into town for just about anything that you would need. I keep telling myself to visit here when it would be warm enough out to take full advantage of the park attached to the inn. read more

Game room, indoor pool, plus an outdoor one in the park, trails, board games, a huge family room near the lobby with a big tv, restaurant that serves good food, a gift shop, and several nice sitting areas throughout the Inn that families could relax or play games in. The rooms are nice and clean and have nice views of the area. Price is affordable and I'd rather stay at a State Park Inn than at a chain hotel. Much friendlier and accommodating. read more

These were the worst accommodations on our twelve day trip around Indiana. We chose the Clifty Inn because of the many glowing reviews we read online. Our room was dark and smelled terrible. Seems like all the light fixtures must have had 25w bulbs and not all of them worked, The windows and the carpeting were filthy. The towels in the bathroom were really thin. We ordered breakfast off the menu rather than using the buffet and had to wait 20 minuted for our food. At least the food was very good. I can't understand how some people had such a positive experience here while ours was so bad. read more

Very happy with the Clifty Inn. The park is beautiful though no water in the Falls this time of year. On the upside, the fall color is gorgeous. We have stayed at a few of the State Park Inns and this one is very nice. The rooms are clean and the bathrooms are fairly updated. They have a good sized indoor pool. The water was a tad chillier that I like, but the area was clean and well kept. They have a hot tub as well. The dining room was very nice. We had the dinner buffet and for a buffet the food was better than I expected. They have many common areas for you to enjoy, games, gift shop and free wifi. read more

We spent the weekend and as always the rooms we clean and well kept and there is no prettier place to stay. The restaurant is a different story on the last morning of our visit they had eggs on the buffet that were so rubbery you could have bounced them on the floor. The Inns of the state parks used to have great food but it is so very institutional now. They need to update their menus and get back to serving good food. I was not happy when I saw the condition of my room. I opened the curtains to see finger prints and dirt on the glass overlooking the water. The carpet had popcorn, hair and God knows what on it. The soap dish on sink had dry residue on it. the mirrors looked worse than the mirrors. I truly believe all the Housekeeping done was make the beds ( change sheets I hope, but not sure of) and put some towels up. Coffee stains were on desk and center bed stand. I talked to several staff members and showed pictures, all said" you can make a complaint", but not one offered to clean it or make it right! For the price I paid I would have rather gone to a motel 6.. and that's sad! The views were beautiful , the food was ok, but nothing to write home about. I stayed because my kid lives close by, and it rained all weekend, but I will never stay there again.. Its sad for me but even more sad is someone paid housekeepers to do a crappy job, someone needs fired, whether its the housekeeper or management, I dont kno! read more

Beautiful grounds and thoroughly updated. Classy, tastefully decorated rooms and common areas. Much attention to quality and local flavor. Family oriented independent hotels are often scary but this place is solid business caliber underneath with hundreds of little upgrades from the ample gathering areas to the lodge resort style furniture to the basketball hoop by the pool. The gift shop is full of unique, fun and stylish stuff that people would actually want to buy. Gracious staff too. Great location for a family reunion, family or just a simple escape. Hiking grounds are gorgeous as is nearby Madison. Don't be put off by the smokestacks on the river; you forget about them after 5 minutes. I can't say enough about this place. I'm thoroughly impressed that a state run hotel could be this nice, far better than most commercial hotels for the price. read more

This has been a terrible experience. Check in was at 4:00 PM. However, room was not ready until 4:45. Shower was cold and had pressure issues. It shut off continuosly throughout the cold shower. Phones in the room did not work correctly. I was told it was a new system. I'm sorry, but I'm not interested in execuses for my money. No maintenance worker on site. I was told the DNR owns the building and they dont like being called about every little thing. I would hate to inconvenience them. Absolutely no solution was provided for any of the problems I encountered nor was I offered any kind of a partial refund. No supervisors/managers were working for the duration of my stay. I stayed at the Clifty Inn this past weekend for a wedding. The park was beautiful and the inn was nice. The room was quaint and cozy. The breakfast buffet that turned into a lunch buffet while I sat there was delicious. The pool and hot tub temps were perfect and it wasn't over crowded while we swam. The ice cream selection was abundant and appreciated. All of these wonderful amenities aside the best part of our stay by far was the service we received from of the employees named Willie. Willie exceeded any expectation I could have had. Anything that we needed he made sure we had. Of all the hotels I've stayed in in my life I have never received such prompt and attentive service as I did from Willie this weekend. The memories we made would not have been possible if it weren't for Willie! I am not sure if I will end up in Madison, Indiana again as I live in Washington D.C. but you better believe that if I do I will be staying at the Clifty Inn!
